Adelaide Reunion October 2015

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 27 December 2015
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Happy New Year all. Hope it is a healthy and happy one.

I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to this dit and our group.

We had a big year. Our hugely successful reunion in Adelaide organised by Nev Thomas and his team was the highlight and will be remembered for the good times for years to come. Tom Houldsworth led us for our 10 Feb function at Husky for the MELBOURNE – VOYAGER commemoration and our Brent Balchin gifted poster donation to the Senior Sailors Mess at CRESWELL. Ron Pope led us in Dubbo where we had a larger team this year than last year, which again included our ladies. What a top time it was there. We also enjoyed our little get togethers throughout the year in SA and NSW, the most recent being on 18 December (my apologies for not including the Lord Mayor of Hornsby as an attendee, Mick was there). On a more sobering note we lost Butch Cousins, Eddie Sheavils, Peter Walton and Bruce Cullen. They will be sadly missed. We had dedication plaques inserted in the GI Chapel for Butch, Eddie and Gary Pyke who passed away in 2013. We also spread Butch’s ashes in Sydney Harbour on the day of the dedication. Thanks again to those who assisted with the eulogies.

Additionally and independent to our group Ken Dobbie has lobbied with success to have the LEEUWIN Memorial retained in its current format when Leeuwin Barracks is sold. Concurrently, Jeff Wake has been leading the push in the West in an attempt to ensure the Drill Hall and other historic items are also retained.

It really has been a big year.

I asked last week for assistance to find out all our group’s birthday dates. Davo and Trevor Bartlett have helped out and provided the data I did not have. Must admit I was surprised at the number and the names I was missing.

Put 10 February in your calendar if you want to attend the ceremony at Huskisson. We have a few starters already, Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Bob and Pat Stupple have already indicated their intentions.

Canberra 2017 We are looking for Canberra based people to make up our committee to assist in the Canberra 2017 reunion. Anybody interested or would like to have input into this committee please contact Schubes on either his email address shoeey@tpg.com.au or telephones 0417027814 or 0262315429. We have some volunteers living outside the Canberra Area, however, it would be great to have more locals involved.

Face Book Have included some pics of the presentation of the MELBOURNE - VOYAGER collision at CRESWELL on Friday 20 November 2015. Make sure you look at the timeline tab also. If you don’t know their contact details, ask me, maybe I have it. Don’t die wondering about your old mate (and he is getting old, turning 69).

G’day All. Merry Christmas to all. Hope it is a healthy and happy one and you can spend the time with those you love. It is such a great time of the year to turn our lives around, turn on the TV, instead of death and destruction movies there are the Christmas flicks and the feel good ones, how good is that.

Then I look at the magazine apparently sponsored by Defence (in the Attachment) on its attitude specifically about Christmas and I fall into a state of anxiety. Defence is leaderless.

We had a very pleasant afternoon at Woolloomoolloo on Friday. Met at the Rockers, however, it was packed with the Christmas crowds so we moved to the restaurant on the corner opposite the Finger Wharf. Worked out just great, we could hear each other speak. We rang up Tank Evans to wish him happy birthday, he didn’t answer the call, so we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to his answering service. Hope you had a good day Tank.

Tom Houldsworth, John Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Kev Bock, Mike Hogan, Knocker and Marilyn Whyte, Tassy and Pam Mason and myself. Apologies were received from Ian Schubert, Ted Hase, Spook Cairns, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Bristles and Lou Lassau. Despite having our professional photographers amongst us I forgot to ask them to take the compulsory pics for our FB page.

Robyn Gawne sent me an email stating Wally had a birthday this month. Wally was one of many birthdays I do not have. Have a look in the Annex and see if your name is there. If it is, could you please let me know.

Bob Johnston has come onboard. John Hatchman has forwarded his email address. Welcome Bob, hope to catch up soon. You were a classmate of both Hatch and me, I need you to sign my Yagan 2 photo.

G’day All. I have returned to Sydney from Cairns where I was visiting my brother. Am very happy to report he is on the improve. When I was in Cairns I caught up with Annie and Jerry Oakley. They are both well and the beautiful Jerry is still cooking scones. Beauty.

On behalf of our group I extend our deepest condolences to Dick and Di Lewin and his family on the loss of their son Rick who was a serving sailor. Dick’s email address is r_dlewin@hotmail.com

Dick forwarded this email. Ron
Please accept my most sincere condolences to you and your family, Di an I both know how you are feeling as our eldest son Rick passed away on the 26th Nov. He was a late adult entry sailor, 42 when he joined in August 2014. Poor lad had almost finished his ET training and due to post into Kuttabul on the 25th October, and join HMAS Adelaide in the new year to complete his logbook. He was offered the chance to come home for treatment in Toowoomba which he greatly appreciated. Sadly he succumbed to melanoma, he was, however awarded his ET rate the day before he died.
I do hope you and your family are recovering and our thoughts were with you.
All the best mate, will see you around in the near future.
Richard Lewin.

Looking forward to catching up for Christmas drinks and lunch on Friday 18 December commencing at 1200ish. Tom and Val Houldsworth, Shep, John Hatchman, Kev Bock, Mick Gallagher, Knocker and Marilyn Whyte, Tassy and Pam Mason and me have indicated attendance. Have had apologies from the Canberra duo of Schubes and Ted Hase. It is good to see three ladies in the roll up. Everybody welcome.

Ken Dobbie and his group have had a good news week. The JR Memorial at LEEUWIN Barracks is to be retained in its current format. The sale of the land will contain a caveat to ensure the Memorial is retained. On behalf of our group Ken we thank you for your hard work and persistence to ensure the Memorial was preserved. There is correspondence in relation to this and other items in the Attachment.

Had an email from Wally and Robyn Gawne indicating Nev Barry was staying at their place on the Sunshine Coast. Nev was moving north and I gather it is to live permanently. Not sure where though.

G’day All. I must thank you all for your kind words and sympathy extended during our recent loss. It was very comforting. My brother is on the way back after undertaking 6 hours of surgery. Pretty happy with the result. I am in the Cairns/Atherton area this week to catch up with him.

Looking forward to catching up for Christmas drinks on Friday 18 December. Tom and Val Houldsworth, Shep, John Hatchman, Kev Bock, Mick Gallagher and me have indicated attendance. Have had apologies from the Canberra duo of Schubes and Ted Hase. Normal time of 1200 kick off for lunch and warries. Everybody welcome.

Dolly is back (thank goodness) on life in Tasmania (is that an oxymoron), Shep has a view on LEEUWIN, some will agree with him, even if you don’t, his article is worth reading for its humour. Tony Gysen has volunteered to provide ongoing trivia on Naval slang, have a look at his first contribution and see whether you really did know. There may be a test of general knowledge at the next reunion!!

Everybody must be spending time at home this Christmas, haven’t heard from anybody where they are going. Let your mates know where you are travelling and when you may be in the same area; we do like to catch up.

G’day All. Have had a tough week, lost my eldest daughters husband Saturday morning, father of grandson Noah and additionally my youngest brother is very sick in Cairns. Hope to get to Cairns after the funeral this Thursday.

We are getting some starters for Christmas drinks at the Rockers on Friday 18 December. Tom and Val Houldsworth, Shep, John Hatchman, Kev Bock and me have indicated attendance. Have had apologies from the Canberra duo of Schubes and Ted Hase. Normal time of 1200 kick off for lunch and warries. Everybody welcome.

Jeff Wake has been sending emails to promote his argument to retain the LEEUWIN assets, copies of these are contained in the Annex.

I went on to Facebook to support a petition on the retention of the Army Chaplains motto to ensure the Army do not remove ‘conquer’ from their 102 year old motto because it is offensive to Mulims. Several of you have supported the petition.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 22 November 2015

G’day All. CRESWELL was a resounding success on Friday evening. We as a group presented the SS Mess with the Brent Balchin produced poster depicting the moment of collision of MELBOURNE and VOYAGER. The SS Mess were very excited to receive it. Tom Houldsworth our lead in the VOYAGER - MELBOURNE commemoration presented the poster to Warrant Officer Ian Harrison at their regular Pay Day raffle functions. Besides having a great feed, meeting old mates, enjoying their hospitality we also won a few raffle prizes. Really a great night. There are pics of the event on our Facebook page. Attendees were Tom and Val Houldsworth, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Bill and Narelle Hay, Ken Scarisbrick plus Bev and Ron Giveen. John and Lynne Hatchman, Spook Cairns and Mick Gallagher tendered their apologies. Again I say thank you to Brent Balchin who so generously donated the poster.

Additionally, I must thank Sandy and Rhonda for their hospitality when we spent the night at their house. Thanks also to those who don’t need naming for offering the same hospitality. It really makes our group special.

Talking to Sandy at their home he was saying how he had caught up by chance with Derek (Knocker) and Marilyn Whyte recently on the road. If this happens to you please take some pics and forward them to me. I would like to put them on our FB page. Lets get our ‘who’s travelling’ going again. It will give us an idea on who we might meet on the road. Let me know when you are planning to go and where.

Jeff Wake and Rod Hazell are doing a lot of work in pursuing the retention of the assets at LEEUWIN. All the players (that is us) have effectively the same goal. We want to preserve for historical reasons the JR Memorial, the Main Gates, the flag area and the Drill Hall. This list is possibly a pie in the sky request list. That may be the case, however, if we ask for a lot we may receive a little. We definitely want to see the JR Memorial retained. One of the suggestions is to put a charter together to start a petition to forward to your local MP. Noting the cutoff time is early next year, it is important we do it fairly quickly to maintain some pressure on the politicians.

Christmas Drinks Who would like to meet up for Christmas Drinks at the Rockers on 18 December. Let me know if you would like to attend. Normal time of 1200 kick off for lunch and warries. Everybody welcome.

There is some interesting reading in the Attachment; read the articles on ‘Army Chaplains to remove ‘conquer’ from 102 year old motto because it is offensive to Mulims and ‘Injured veteran fights and wins court case against invalidity payment splitting’.

G’day All. Our next function is at CRESWELL this coming Friday 20 November commencing 1800 at the Senior Sailors Mess. Dress is smart casual. We are presenting Brent Balchin’s poster of the collision of MELBOURNE -VOYAGER to the Mess. Who wants to attend? I need names of those attending to arrange access by Wednesday this week. Promises to be a great night. Don’t forget you will need positive ID.

The disposal of the assets at LEEUWIN are still headlines. I thank all for their contribution, however, it is now a very disjointed conversation and difficult to record, consequently I will no longer be adding all the conversations to the web site. All the players (that is us) have effectively the same goal. We want to preserve for historical reasons the JR Memorial, the Main Gates, the flag area and the Drill Hall. Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 8 November 2015
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Our next function is at CRESWELL on Friday fortnight, 20 November at the Senior Sailors Mess. Brent Balchin forwarded a poster last year of the collision of MELBOURNE/VOYAGER to me. It has been framed and we are donating it to the Mess. Who wants to attend? I need names of those attending to arrange access to the Pay Day raffle function in the Mess that night. Promises to be a great night.

Have spent a bit of time on Face Book this week adding the pics of previous reunions. Have a gander. The details are below.

The disposal of the assets at LEEUWIN are headlines. Some of our group (Jeff Wake and Darky and Shirley Rowland) plus other EXJR’s attending one of the meetings on Wednesday at East Fremantle. The Attachment contains the correspondence. Ken Dobbie’s comments are also included. Additionally, there is a lot more reading a few more jokes and a poem. Hope it fills in a bit of time and is interesting reading.

If you care enough to contribute to the discussion in retaining the assets or anything else at LEEUWIN you think is important to you and our successors contact the appropriate authorities and let them know what you think. It is apparent Defence has no sense of loyalty to previous servicemen, they are only concerned with the bottom line. It appears similar to what occurred in Sydney in the 90’s when the Liberal Government sold off the Sydney assets. Bloody losers www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page16.htm

SYDNEY Decommissioning SYDNEY’s decommissioning slipped under my guard. I know a lot of you have served in SYDNEY 3, I also know Bryan Stapley was the Engineer on SYDNEY 4 which has just decommissioned. I have not served on a SYDNEY, but I know SYDNEY 4 used to get the perk trips and was always a happy ship.

G’day All. We are driving back to Sydney today Monday. Looking forward to seeing the giraffes the Sydney side of Hay.

We had a washup of the Adelaide reunion last Friday. Terry and Helen Dack, Bob and Pat Stupple, Nifty Thomas and myself attended. We had received emails from Tom Houldsworth, Rocky Freier and Schubes congratulating the committee on their collective good work over the weekend. Nifty is going to produce a general report including some lessons learnt which we can use for our next major function in Canberra in 2017.

There are 30 or so pics on our Facebook Page from all events on the weekend. If you have some you would like included please forward them to me.

Besides the Melbourne Cup and the Wallabies stumbling at the final jump there is something more important to us this week. That is the meetings in Fremantle on Wednesday 4 November. If you can make it please make the effort to attend one of the two meetings being held at the East Fremantle Football Club. If you care enough to contribute to the discussion in retaining the assets or anything else at LEEUWIN you think is important to you and our successors contact the appropriate authorities and let them know what you think. Ken Dobbie has forwarded another letter promoting the retention of the LEEUWIN Memorial. It is the lead article in the Attachment.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 25 October 2015
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. The Adelaide Reunion was an outstanding success. Nifty Nev Thomas and his team did a fabulous job, providing venues that were first class.

Friday night ‘meet and greet’ demonstrated the popularity and necessity of name tags. ‘Who is that’ was a constant question. Forgot to tell everybody they are getting older and needed to wear their specs. (Joke) The rabbit bags containing all the LEEUWIN memorabilla plus the marvelous collection of local information brochures, drink bottles, glasses, lights plus many more pepared by Terry and Helen Dack were collected. What a great job Terry and Helen did in putting them and all the memorabilla together.

Despite earlier warnings on the quanity of finger food, there was heaps and it was great. Brent Balchins donated posters were used to decorate the room and there was lots of interest in them. There was also the TORRENS Ships Bell and the TORRENS Ships Lifebuoy. We also had on display an original TINGIRA medallion and the history. This was provided by Tug Wilson’s wife as the medallion belonged to her grandfather.

Nifty Thomas welcomed all and handed over to Bob Stupple to MC the night.
The function finished around midnight. Fortunately for us, through the good work of the committee, many of us had motel accommodation adjacent the venue.

On Saturday night we gathered in a larger room in the same venue for our sit down dinner. This was a three course meal. For the record we did not receive any brickbats about the meal, there were compliments everywhere. We were honoured to have in our presence a former Navy man and former Governor of SA, Kev Scarce accompanied by his wife Liz. Kev is currently the Chancellor of the Adelaide University and is the Chair of The Nuclear recycle Royal Commission. Later in the night he talked about the future of uranium in SA.

Bob Stupple as MC was again in his element and did a terrific job, additionally, he assisted Liz Scarce in presenting the lucky door prizes (36 bottles of premium SA wines donated by Glen Butler from his own vineyard)

The band was excellent, we all had our pics taken and again we were entertained with Brent Balchins posters and also his DVD’s. Brent is a real artist and a generous one at that.

We then had an auction of the posters hosted by auctioneer Terry Dack. He sold nearly all the posters. We as a group have another $355 in our kick. Thanks Brent and Terry.

You may recall Butch Cousins donated a shield for the ’63 JR of the year’. We now have three recipients, this year, for all his efforts in helping with the function in Adelaide it was awarded to Terry Dack.

Terry Dack then took the floor and asked all who were present where we would like our next major reunion. The reunion decided it would be Canberra in 2017 about the same time of the year. Ian and Marian Schubes have asked for assistance from those from the South Coast of NSW. The first meeting will be held next February 10 in Huskisson when we meet for the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE collision anniversary.

Sunday morning we mustered for our sports day and farewell BBQ at Marion RSL. 16 starters hit the bowls green. As we provided LEEUWIN 63 Shiraz as prizes for the winners the events were hotly contested. Plenty of laughs, good weather and mentoring by some bowlers ensured a good time was had by all. Nifty who was dual hatted on the day as he is also Secretary of the RSL welcomed our group to his club, presented the prizes to the winning group and farewelled us.

On a side note, if anybody took pics and would be happy for those to go on Facebook please forward them to me.

G’day All. The Adelaide Reunion is our main focus this month and it is reinforced this week with Nifty Nev Thomas’ lead article in the Attachment. For all those attending the reunion it is a must read. I am on the road enroute to Adelaide.

David Lowe sent an update on where he is right now:
I see Norm Friebe was in touch with you so I thought I should make contact.

I have been quiet since Mildura due to Linda’s health. You may remember that while in Mildura Linda had a slight A/F attack and we decided not to go on the steamer so as not to annoy others. We left Mildura early and she was not well over Xmas and the New Year and in Feb was in hospital in a bad way. Things settled down for a while and at regular intervals she was in and out of hospital through to July. In August they fitted a pacemaker but still there were regular problems. After 12 months she was admitted again for a heart ablation and that worked reasonably well but we still did not dare to travel too far. Ten weeks ago she was very ill and passing out, so I called an ambulance and she went into cardiac arrest while they were here. They did get her back after between 10 to 20 minutes and took her of to hospital. They found out that the problem was not her heart but a lack of blood and iron. She was discharged after a week and it appeared that she would need a lot of assistance. She has progressed well and is totally self sufficient but she does have some brain damage, but not too serious. Two years ago I gave up my pension/welfare work and all committees that I was on to keep an eye on Linda. That’s where we are at, at the moment.

That is why we have are not attending the reunion in Adelaide. I would have enjoyed going because Adelaide is my home state. Trust you will all have a good time.

David Lowe.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 11 October 2015

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. The Adelaide Reunion is our main focus this month. I am leaving next weekend driving from Sydney to Adelaide. Wouldn’t be surprised to meet others on the road. I have received several calls from people who have booked accommodation near ‘The Junction’. Hope you are locked and loaded on travel and accommodation details and ready to fire on all cylinders over the weekend.

The address of the Friday night ‘meet and greet’ and the Saturday night dinner dance is:

‘The Junction’ is 370 Anzac Highway, Camden Park SA 5038 and there is plenty of parking onsite.

Friday night will allow you an opportunity to catch up on all your oppos. On arrival you will be able to collect your name badges and those that have ordered will be able to pick up their much prized LEEUWIN 63 rabbits that Terry and Helen have put together. This function commences at 1900, dress for all events is Smart Casual. A little bit of housekeeping will have to occur. One issue will be the numbers who will not ‘R’ not be attending Sunday’s farewell BBQ. If you do not say anything we will be catering for you.

This is snack food event only, a really good ‘A la Carte’ menu is available in an adjacent dining area at reasonable prices.

Saturday evening will commence at 1900 (dress smart casual) and be hosted by our MC Bob Stupple. He will lead us through the evening which will include a talk by our special guest speaker, the immediate past Governor of SA Admiral Kev Scarce Retired. We are also hoping Terry Corkhill will be in attendance to spin a few warries. You may remember him as the Mokare Divisional Petty Officer. The band is good and will probably keep you on the dance floor. Wear comfy shoes.

More on Saturday:

Special needs and dietary requirements should be notified in advance.

Venue has easy ground floor access.

Ample car parking is available just outside the door at the Western end of the complex.

Open plan seating will be used. One table reserved for special guests and committee.

Other tables are 10 per table.

Groups may reserve seating in advance if desired.

Cash bar available

Sunday morning at the Marion RSL (31-39 Norfolk Rd, Marion SA 5043) has entertainment, sport and food laid on. Bare foot bowls for the brave hearted commences at 1000 and this will be complimented by the SA RAN Band which will play in the Bowlers Lounge from 1100 to 1300; lunch commences at 1200 (for lunch, all you need is your green voucher). What a way to say farewell.

More on Sunday:

The BBQ lunch will comprise lamb chops, sausages & meat pattie sizzle, BBQ onions, bread, three salad choices, bread, margarine, condiments provided.

The Marion RSL & Bowling Club members and friends may attend the BBQ as well and enjoy the musical entertainment.

Continue until whenever. The club and bar will remain open until 6:00 pm.

Photos There will be pics taken at all events.

David Lowe Norm Friebe contacted me about David. I must admit I have been wondering what had happened to him, as I hadn’t heard or seen him since Mildura reunion. Norm is going to catch up with him prior to this year’s reunion in Adelaide.

Retention of LEEUWIN Assets More news from Ken Dobbie in the Attachment and in the website. He is really kicking goals. He has received further responses from the authorities. Have a look at what he and those interested in retaining the LEEUWIN assets are achieving

The ‘Leeuwin larikan’ bumper stickers have arrived. They look brilliant. They will be sold for $3 each. We still have some of the traditional stickers with the LEEUWIN crest available for the same price. Add a $1 for postage if you want one or two.

G’day All. Football fever is alive, the Rugby World Cup, the NRL and AFL Finals series is upon us. Great to be alive and good to be a couch potato. Ouch I say after I see the big hits. Must admit I would love to see a Wallaby win, an all Queensland GF in the NFL and an all WA GF in the AFL, sadly The Dockers missed out.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. We had a memorable time at Dubbo, full on and enjoyed by all. Ron Pope will produce a report which will publish.

Does anybody remember Peter Walton from the 7th Intake. We as a group had been unable to contact him. It is my sad duty to inform you that ‘Reveille’ reports his death. No details of when. Thanks to Phil Clements for letting us know.

When we were having dinner on Tuesday night at the Bowls Club in Dubbo there was a bloke sitting by himself at the end of the long table we were using. He came up to us after he finished his meal explaining that he was on his way home from Adelaide to Smiths Lake NSW, apologized for overhearing our conversation but noticed we were talking about Navy. We made a few inquiries, Ron Lockwood from the 7th intake has been found. He was a Stoker. Does anybody remember him or want his details.

Reunion 2015 We now need to confirm numbers for the reunion functions. This is a reminder for those who have not paid for the functions. Please deposit into our account or notify me of your non-attendance by 20 September.

Retention of LEEUWIN Assets Have been emailing Ken Dobbie and Ian Dunn (1st Intake). Ian is leading the charge in WA for the retention of some of the assets of LEEUWIN including the JR Memorial. We have a web page on our site containing the history of LEEUWIN and an update on the status of what Ian, Ken and their supporters have been doing.

I have ordered the ‘Leeuwin larikan’ bumper stickers. They should be available in Adelaide in October. There are still some of the traditional stickers available also.

Have you moved recently, or in the past few years and not let me know of your new address. Your mates do want to know how you are going. Please keep your snail mail address and telephone details up to date. It helps when your email address changes. When in Dubbo recently, I found out I had email difficulties with at least two of the 7 there. One was not receiving the other I was not receiving. If you think there is a comms problem, you probably are right.

Function details The main function of our 2015 reunion will be held at the Morphetville Junction Function Centre. The guest speaker has been confirmed; thanks very much to Dave Scarce and Fred Howes. G’day All. Happy Fathers Day. Ssppring is in the air, good to be alive and it is beginning to warm up. All you travellers who are OS, you can now come home.

I am surprised by the lack of interest in the ‘Drill Hall’ being retained. Ken Dobbie is currently making an application to have the Memorial, Front Gates and Flagstaff retained insutu. Glenn Summerhayes email relating to his concerns is contained in the attachment. Your thoughts please!

We are off to the AIF Bowls in Dubbo next week. We only expect to party for a week, is that not an attractive proposition. We have a vacancy. Does anybody else wish to nominate at this late stage. Doug Wilson, Russ Loane, Nifty and Dianne Thomas, Barry Andrew, Nev Barry (spectator), Ron and Carole Pope, Danny Tiley, (Jules) Julie Robertson and Ron Giveen are starters. Ron Pope is our leader this year; his email address is ronpope1947@gmail.com. At least 6 of us have accommodation booked at the Big 4 Caravan Park

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Hope all those living on the South Coast of NSW have survived the floods of last week. Nowra had record rainfall not surpassed in the last 100 years. Caught up with Tom Houldsworth from Nowra on Thursday. He and Val were staying overnight in Mascot, enroute to USA. Speaking to him earlier on Wednesday, he was concerned whether they could leave Nowra to make their flight.

Glen Summerhayes has emailed me since he has returned from hospital. He is concerned about the fate of the LEEUWIN Drill Hall. I have an opportunity to promote a ‘Petition’, I am considering ‘Save the Drill Hall’.

Let it be retained in its current position with a heritage listing. Let the local community have access to it, but keep it as it is. This of course would effectively ensure the LEEUWIN Memorial remain where it is. I know there are several of our group including Ken Dobbie who have definite ideas on the LEEUWIN site. Do you think it is worth a petition?

Forgot to mention last week about the 2015 Mons Cup, t was held Friday week ago at David Phillips Field, Daceyville. There were 7 men’s teams and two women's teams. The women’s teams were from CANBERRA and a composite All Stars team from other ships and establishments. The all Stars won the game.

Additionally, in the mens comp, the two teams to play the Grand Final were DARWIN and ALBATROSS. ALBATROSS won after the bell scoring a converted try beating DARWIN 24-19. Great game to watch and of course seeing a Fleet Unit there was fantastic. Geoff Stokes told me CANBERRA played really well earlier.

Surprisingly CANBERRA was not in port. She left both the men’s and women's team in Sydney to compete. First time a men and women’s team have been landed, I reckon this is history and hopefully has created a precedent in the modern era for other ships.

There is an article in the Attachment which mentions Nev Barry.

Knobby Clarke has retired from Toll. All the best to him and Rhonda during their retirement years. I believe they will be travelling and be in Adelaide a week after the reunion.

AIF Bowls in Dubbo commences on 15 September Bowls – Jack Davey has had to pull out with health issues. Does anybody else wish to nominate at this late stage. Please contact Ron Pope.

Reunion – there was a meeting last Friday at the Seacliffe Hotel. Please assist the organisers by confirming your attendance by depositing the $130 a head into our account, or alternatively confirming your attendance. Additionally, if you would like to purchase any of the outstanding array of rabbits available, please let me know. There is a cut off for the purchase of these, 31 August is not far away.

Reunion 2015 The main function of our 2015 reunion will be held at the Morphetville Junction Function Centre. The guest speaker has been confirmed; thanks very much to Dave Scarce and Fred Howes. The committee has worked hard to make sure you will not be bored during your stay. You will be surprised and pleased to see what they have in store for you at the entrance to the main function. Bring your camera. What about the bare foot bowls on Sunday morning. Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 16 August 2015
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Thanks for and I appreciate the responses on Vietnam Veterans Day. Mick Gallagher is assisting the Mayor of Hornsby and cannot make Martin Place, Ted Hase is catching up with family in Euchura, Schubes cannot make it from Canberra, Bob Saunders is tied up with his sub-branch, Tank Evans cannot make it, Rob Cavanagh is in Brisbane and Ken Dobbie hopes those from WA can attend the ceremony at LEEUWIN Barracks. We are returning from OS and we unfortunately, effectively lose the day Tuesday, but not the spirit of the Anniversary.

To elaborate further on Ken’s remarks above and to see the results of his lobbying to have the LEEUWIN Memorial retained, please read the email below:

G'day Gents

I have had mail today from Darren Chester MP regarding the memorial, he advises:

"Defence intends for the Junior Recruit Memorial to be retained on the Leeuwin Barracks site, either in its current location or alternatively at Preston Point which is to be retained by Defence. If the memorial remains in situ, it will become the responsibility of the future owner who will liaise with the local heritage council to determine an appropriate outcome."

For further information the contact is Eloise Ockwell eloise.ockwell@defence.gov.au

I am extremely happy with this as an outcome.

Cheers

Ken D

This is brilliant news. Like many others, representing you and me, I have congratulated Ken who is one of our group on achieving this brilliant outcome. Our kids will appreciate this.

Buried Land Rover Further to the previous comments, Bob Stupple recalls it being mentioned, Mal Ritchie is a skeptic.

There is a meeting for the reunion committee on the 28th of August at the Seacliffe Hotel. All Crow Eaters and invited guests are encouraged to attend. G’day All. Still OS. Should I tell you UK. Saying that I did see Jim Harris being interviewed on BBC1 commenting on the loss of the Ashes to the Poms. We did win the rugby though and that is good.

There are four attachment this week as there has been a lot of Ads on reunions etc, they have been forwarded earlier. Look in Attachment 4 to the responses in respect of the Landrover buried in LEEUWIN and other articles related to the LEEUWIN closure. Knocker Whyte, John Hume and Wally Cook recall hearing about it when in LEEUWIN, Ken Dobbie is skeptical. Great reading. If you have anything else to add please let me know.

Fortnightly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 26 July 2015
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Spoke to Brent Balchin, Mike Hogan and Nev Barry during the week. Mike spent some time with Nev Barry at the Westmead private earlier in the week, he reports Nev indicated he is feeling better and expects to be returning to Neville early next week. Brent has forwarded us some extraordinary posters for the reunion in October. They are generally of ships of the fleet and have LEEUWIN 63 markings. In Brent’s words, ‘just ideal for the man cave’. Who would be interested in one?

Won’t be doing Weekly News next week, ergo Fortnightly News this week.

MELBOURNE/VOYAGER Collision You may be aware Brent Balchin forwarded a poster representing an image of MELBOURNE and VOYAGER at the time of the collision. I have been negotiating with CRESWELL to have it hung in the Senior Sailors Mess. Recently I have been in contact with the Mess President. We are looking to a Friday evening in CRESWELL to make the presentation.

Dedications Schubes eulogy for Gary Pyke and the pics are now in our website.

Have been speaking to Knocker Whyte, Mike Hogan and Spook Cairns during the week. Knocker and Maryln are currently in Queensland at Theodore enroute to see their son and family in Port Douglas. Mike Hogan had an appointment with his specialist who put him under to have this throat checked out. Havent heard of the results yet. All the best mate. Spook was enjoying his birthday with his family.

In the Attachment this week there is an article about an Able Seaman on SUCCESS performing OOW duties, it is part of an initiative of SUCCESS during her latest deployment. It appears as if the experiment is an enormous success. What a breakthrough for a lot of sailors who are interested in seamanship and navigation; an initiative of substance.

G’day All. Today we said farewell to three of our LEEUWIN brothers by attending the dedication ceremonies for Eddie Sheavils, Gary Pyke and Butch Cousins. Garry Angel spoke for Eddie, Schubes for Gary and Spook for Butch. On completion of the ceremony Butch’s family spread his ashes in the EMS Boat area. There was a big turnout by the families who indicated they appreciated the eulogies. I left the Rockers at 1800ish.

I received calls today from Phil Clements and Mike Hogan expressing their disappointment in not being able to attend. Apologies were received earlier from Mike Shephard, Mick Gallagher, Col Yench, Mal Chatfield, Rick Avey, Jim Bush and Russ Loane.

For those who made a financial contribution to this service I mentioned your donation to the respective family.

Spoke to Mick Gilfoyle during the week, Mick has been having a tough time recently, with the C word attacking him and also a heart attack.

Has anybody been in contact with Bill Birt recently. He has moved house. Have had a ‘return to sender’ snail mail. If you are in contact with him please contact me.

Have received advice from Ted Hase and Glen Forno their respective email accounts have been hacked. If you receive emails from them, treat them with caution.

G’day All. Watching Navy play Rugby is the way to go, especially in Queensland in Autumn. Watching Navy win would have been the best, unfortunately there is another year to wait.

Schubes, Russ Loane, Kev Smith, Macca Mc Kenzie and I caught up on Friday night at the Story Bridge Hotel. Thanks to Kev (Smouch) Smith for organizing the venue. Our group then regrouped on Saturday at Ballymore to watch the games. Schubes, Rob Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Jim Harris, Ken Fielding, Kev Smith and Wayne Butterfield watched Navy lose the Men and Women’s game but we won the Old Salts. On completion of activities we gathered at the Pineapple Hotel for convivial drinks. A great day and night was had by all; try and make it next year. You wont be sorry.

Attachment There are two particular interesting articles in the Attachment, one is on the war in Afghanistan the other is on the Viet Nam war. They are quite long, but so were the wars, really good stuff.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 19 and 26 April 2015

G’day All. Had a few problems last week with communications. Was fishing at Smiths Lake (no large fish pics available or possible) when it was hit with the storms that hit NSW last weekend. No power or data access as OPTUS was down. Thanks to those who tried to contact me to ensure I was still vertical.

On Friday 17 April my outboard motor played up, well blew up actually and we had to be towed home. There is only one Outboard Motor Repair shop in Forster and they would not look at my engine until the following Tuesday, however, they gave me a phone number of a bloke who works from his home. Does anybody remember a bloke called Peter Elms, an EXJR, he joined after us. He paid off as a Leading Stoker, he repaired my donk in 24 hours. If anybody is in the area and wants their outboard or diesel engine repaired, he is your man.

How did you spend your ANZAC Day, I met up with Mike Hogan in Sydney yesterday. I marched with the BRISBANE group with my Grand daughter Lalia.

The Dedication plaque ceremony will be held for Eddie Sheavils and Gary Pyke on 21 June. I am waiting on confirmation from the relatives of Butch Cousins to see whether his plaque will be included. Please let me know if you intend to attend.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 12 April 2015

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Put Sunday 21 June tentatively in your calendar, there is a distinct possibility we will have three dedication plaque ceremonies on this day. Will confirm at a later date but am awaiting confirmation for Eddie Sheavils, Butch Cousins and Gary Pyke.

Ken Dobbie reports: I have had some correspondence from Peter Law who you will recall is the CO of Leeuwin Barracks, he confirms that the place will close and the land and buildings sold. He also advises that proceedings are at a very early stage and action may not take place for some time (years). As such any decision about the JR memorial etc has not been considered by anyone at this stage. Speculation currently circulating to have it located at TS Perth cadet unit has no foundation. Peter Law expects that no action will be taken without some consultation with the ex JR community and the RAN Heritage Centre. The cost of any relocation I estimate will be around $10,000 (based on the costs to put it in) and the design of the memorial takes into consideration that a move might have been necessary at some stage. The design allows for the three panels to be separated and should present few problems for a suitably qualified person. There are two other memorials on the Leeuwin site, a WW2 plaque at the base of the flag pole and one up in the accommodation area related to refugees housed there. Dept of Defence will need to consider these as well.

I do not intend to become involved with this in any formal way, my health needs are such that I will not be able to give time and effort to it if needed. I am assuming that the Dept. of Defence will cover the costs, if not someone may need to consider a fund raising initiative. If we get requests from people who want top be involved we should refer them to Peter Law. Cheers Ken D
