Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 31 December 2017
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. A Happy, healthy and a fun year to all for 2018. Hope you are all with your family and friends and having a fat time. We are.

Sadly, we have lost Dick Lewin, Checkers Aldrige and Wayne Chapman from our group this year. Our thoughts go to their families and friends. Rob Cavanagh, who is going to speak on behalf of Dick at the Dedication ceremony, would like to know if anybody has any stories they can add when Dick was serving in VAMPIRE or WATSON or really anywhere. Please respond to
cav-17@bigpond.com

Our youngest member John Grenfell turned 70 this week. On your behalf I have forwarded birthday cards to all our group over the last eighteen months for those we have postal addresses for. I do not have any more birthday cards left, have given the residue to the 8th intake.

This year we had our major function in Canberra, this was an outstanding success, our thanks to the Schuberts, assisted by the Parkers and committee. We had our initial Remembrance Day (Gary Angel initiative) get together at the Maritime Museum, again, fantastic day, we also met in Cairns in July, Rockers in May and possibly, our flagship get together, we assembled in Husky for the VOYAGER ceremony in February. All events were positive experiences and enjoyed by all. Hope to see you next year.

Our next get together is planned for Husky on the 10 February to commemorate the loss of the people on VOYAGER. Start making plans if you intend to go. It is less than 2 months away. The Schuberts, Moot, Spook, John Tant and the Hogans are starters.

Our next reunion in 2019. Thanks for the response on venues. To date we have received quite a few suggestions. 8 for Darwin, 3 for the Sea Cruise, 5 for Hobart, 2 for the Gold Coast and 3 for Bribie Island. Will keep it open until February. Flick me an email with your choice. Am not looking for starters at this time, just opinions on what would suit you.

Have received the polo shirts from the new supplier, if you want one and need a size between S, L and XXXL (no Mediums) I bought spare ones. We also have more caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design. No more pen and pencil sets, they have all been sold. All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging. Shirts are $30, caps are $15.

Have received an update from Mike Haining, am still receiving updates on Brent (he is improving). We wish Mike, Brent and all our group and wives who are in Sick Bay, a speedy recovery.

Have you changed your postal address and not let me know. If you have, please let me update our database. I keep it safe and it will not be put on any website. Concurrently, please have a look at our website in the members page and check whether your correct email address is listed. The website address is www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page3.htm

Face Book – Our FB Page has been updated; Darby Ashton’s pics of the reunion and Santa Surfie Richards. If you want to include your pics on this site please send them to me rugbyron@bigpond.com or Nev Thomas on unicom05@bigpond.net.au the site address is https://www.facebook.com/LEEUWIN1963 The easiest way for the non Facebook people to look at our pics and posts (if you do not have or do not want a FB account) is to go to our website and click on the link.

Have been in contact with the Command Chaplain organization again. The dedication for Dick Lewin and Checkers Aldridge is expected to be in February 2018. The exact date is still not known as of today (31 Dec 17). They are also going to discuss the granite piece Ken Dobbie forwarded from the JR Memorial at Leeuwin Barracks offering it for placement in the GI Chapel.

If anyone is travelling through Molong NSW, remember Jim Clegg and his Missus have the only motel in that town. Good way to catch up with Jim.

G’day All. Merry Christmas to all. Hope you are all with your family and friends and having a fat time. We are.

What a Naval week, the finding of the AE1, this is simply brilliant. This century the SYDNEY, AE1 and Midget Japanese submarine have been found. I have read so much over the years of the AE1 and AE2, now they are both accounted for. Good news for the families. Coupled with this there is a great dit on the ‘O’ boats in the Attachment. For mine, the sludgemariners were never recognized or paid enough. This amount of recognition, may not be enough, but it is a step in the right direction.

Our next get together that is planned is Husky for the 10 February commemoration for the loss of the people on VOYAGER. Start making plans if you intend to go. It is less than 2 months away. The Schuberts, Moot, Spook and the Hogans are starters.

Shirts are $30, caps are $15. Tell the Missus, she may shout you something for Christmas.

Have received an update from Mike Haining, am still receiving updates on Brent (he is improving). We wish Mike, Brent and all our group and wives who are in Sick Bay, a speedy recovery.
Mike has forwarded this:
Ron,
Still in Sick Bay at week 9 with Gillian Barre Syndrome but recovering slowly. Whilst a fully recovery date isn't forecast I remain confident I can get over this condition which is a real "bastard".
All the best wishes to all for this festive season.
Regards,
Mike

This is the last call for all as you have you celebrated your 70th birthday. If you haven’t received a birthday card from the 63 group, please contact me and read under. I have received eight responses so far from those who haven’t received a card. Some of these were addressed correctly, waiting, AP.

G’day All. There is quite a lot in the attachment this week, I have forwarded it earlier. Have received 10 returns from the Mail Administrato. If you have not received your copy please let me know and I will resend it.

Our next get together that is planned is Husky for the 10 February commemoration for the loss of the people on VOYAGER. Start making plans if you intend to go. It is just over 2 months away.

It is time for us to make a decision on our next venue for our reunion in 2019. To date I have received 11 responses. 4 for Darwin, 2 for the Sea Cruise, 2 for Hobart, 2 for the Gold Coast and 1 for Bribie Island.

Where would you prefer to go. To date we have been to the Gold Coast in 2003 and 2005, Fremantle in 2008, Mildura 2010, then Sydney 2013, then Adelaide 2015 and then this year in Canberra.

We have not been to Melbourne but we have been to Victoria vide Mildura. We have not been to Brisbane but been to the Gold Coast twice. The two states we have not had functions are Tasmania and the Territory.

Have received support for the following:

Darwin;
Hobart;
Gold Coast (St George venue);
Sea cruise;
Gold Coast RSL;
Bribie Island area
Other; and
Do not care.

Rocky has forwarded the following:
With regards to the venue for the Reunion, I can get a general idea for you of what we have here if you like
For a start, there is the RSL, as you know. They have their own bowls club just up the road, plus there are at least 2 more on the island
Golf clubs. 2 at least
Hotels, 2 on the island plus the new Sandstone Point hotel right before the bridge to the island. Pretty fancy
Caravan parks. At least 3. Main one has just had a major upgrade right next door to the Bowls club.
(I believe you know this one)
Motel. 1 right on the water with its own restaurant.
"The Ferryman" does cruises up the passage,
Ill round up a few "flyers" and send them to you to check out.
Cheers mate
Rocky

G’day All. Back to Sydney and back to the couch, cricket and football at the same time, bloody beautiful. We are in heaven.

Darby has forwarded his pics of the reunion in Canberra, they are on our FB page for you to see. Thanks Darby. Also there is a pic of Santa Surfie Richards, have a look, everybody is enjoying themselves, including Surfie Santa.

Have a look at the Attachment, Quigs and Syd King are mentioned saving one of their mate’s life on the golf course. Quigs still takes a Wednesday Sporty, can’t break good habits. There is a URL to look at the pic as I cannot reproduce it.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Saturday was an outstanding success at the Australian Maritime Museum. Pics of the event have been posted on our Facebook page. We had two late withdrawals as Glen Summerhayes was unable to attend as he was too crook and Mike Shephard’s wife Jean was undergoing treatment and Shep wanted to stay by her side.

Those who did attend were Gary Angel, Spook Cairns, Ken Scarisbrick, Mick Gallagher, Schubes, Wally, Robyn and Kelly Gawne, Ted Hase, Jack Davey, Macca McKenzie, Roger and Dee Collins and me. There was a Remembrance Day ceremony being conducted at the AMM directed to the NSW Commando Association. We took part in that ceremony. On completion of the service we were offered Morning Tea. We then had our pics taken with the VAMPIRE as a backdrop, then proceeded to the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel for lunch. Some did do a tour of VAMPIRE.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Thought I could update a few other highlights of our reunion you would be interested in. Speaking parts - we had a MC, Bongo DiBetta, he controlled and entertained our group, ex JR Admiral Russ Crane was the guest speaker, he reminded us amongst other things ‘we were the second and third best intakes out of LEEUWIN’. Leading roles Hector Hart and Phil Clements produced our rabbits, Hector the JR Posters and Phil the pen and pencil sets.

You may remember we had an auction for the LEEUWIN ship’s buoy. Some may remember a similar auction on the Gold Coast when bids in excess of $1000 were taken, then to be told the buoy did belong to the current HMAS LEEUWIN and wasn’t for sale, well Tom Houldsworth did produce this one for sale. The successful bidder was Barry Andrew.

John (Hatch) Hatchman did present me with a pic taken in 1963 at Port Beach in Freo which included Alan Lowes with Peewee Petherick covering me with sand (about a metre high) and placing a cigarette in my mouth. Good blast from the past. Thanks Mate.

I was very happy to receive a response from Brent in respect of his being awarded the 2017 JR of the year award. I don’t think he realizes how much we appreciated his contributions over the years.

Talking about pics of the weekend. Please send them to me electronically if possible, otherwise please put them on a stick and forward them to PO Box 137 Dee Why NSW 2099. Schubes is bringing his to Sydney for the Remembrance Day cerermony.

Will be putting out a survey in the near future to determine where our next big do will be. If you have a contribution please let me know. There have been at least three nominations so far, Darwin, Hobart, the Gold Coast (St George) and/or a sea voyage.

Sick Bay Michael Haining is not travelling too well, received this from his wife Netta. Michael is currently in Lake Macquarie Private hospital- he is unable to stand up-no strength in his legs. Had to call an ambulance yesterday. Not sure what is causing it. Netta Haining

Brent Balchin has had a set back and is returning to the PA tomorrow. Sue Balchin

We wish them both a speedy recovery.

The ad for the Remembrance Day ‘The Wake’ has been updated with more starters. I will be wearing medals for the ceremony, up to you though, to do what you want. Hoges will not be able to attend as he and Jill are on the 7 seas cruising.

Have been in contact with the Command Chaplain organization. The dedication for Dick Lewin and Checkers Aldridge is expected to be in February 2018. The exact date not known at this time. They are also going to discuss the granite piece Ken Dobbie forwarded from the JR Memorial at Leeuwin Barracks offering it for placement in the GI Chapel.

Have you celebrated your 70th birthday and not received a birthday card from the 63 group. If you haven’t, please contact me and read under.

Mentioned earlier about the recalcitrant Australia Post in taking years to deliver a letter to Zeke. Well to further elaborate on their efficiency, this week, I received RTS birthday cards that were forwarded in April and May. I have also had RTS for the birthday cards for Robin Mackinnon, Barry Nichols, John Nicholson and Henry Overmars, if you have any contact details for these blokes, please let me know.

Have you changed your postal address and not let me know. If you have, please let me update our database. I keep it safe and it will not be put on any website. Concurrently, please have a look at our website in the members page and check whether your correct email address is listed. The website address is www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page3.htm

Face Book – Our FB Page has been updated; there are pics of the reunion. You will know these people. If you want to include your pics on this site please send them to me rugbyron@bigpond.com
or Nev Thomas on unicom05@bigpond.net.au the site address is
https://www.facebook.com/LEEUWIN1963 The easiest way for the non Facebook people to look at our pics and posts (if you do not have or do not want a FB account) is to go to our website and click on the link.

The polo shirts will be a goer, I have received orders for around 10. If anybody else want one with the two emblems, LEEUWIN Ship’s crest on left side and LEEUWIN Larikan on the other. Approx $40 plus postage.

Pen and Pencil sets. They are cast in wood, look great, feel very comfortable to write with and only cost $25 a set. Phil Clements has done very well with these. The sets are part of the memorabilia package we have for sale. Let me know if you want one, I can forward it to you, they will be good as a Christmas present. Pics on our FB page. Tell your wife about them.

If anyone is travelling through Molong NSW, remember Jim Clegg and his Missus have the only motel in that town. Good way to catch up with Jim.

G’day All. I told you so, our function in Canberra went off with a bang. It was a total success, good food, good company and a good time for all. So successful there was a popular vote taken to have the next function in 2019. The committee, led by the Schuberts and the Parkers were applauded for all their brilliant work in organizing a top time. We had one late withdrawal because of sickness, Jock McGregor’s wife Dot got real crook which prevented them from attending.

The Butch Cousins donated shield ‘Legends of 63 JR of the Year was announced for 2017 over the weekend. The award each year is decided by the previous recipients. This year it has been awarded to Brent Balchin for his ongoing support to our group. Brent has been manufacturing and donating us posters over the years at no cost. We have been auctioning these items e.g we made $250 over this last weekend to support our group. Brent is a deserving recipient. I will send a pic of the shield engraved with his name to his wife Sue who can then show him in hospital. A copy is on our FB page.

Talking about pics of the weekend. Please send them to me electronically if possible, otherwise please put them on a stick and forward them to PO Box 137 Dee Why NSW 2099.

Sue Balchin

We wish them both a speedy recovery.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. We are in the home straight, 5 days to go to our major function commences in Canberra. It will go off with a bang.

Phil and Joan Clements came over to our house on Saturday to deliver the pen and pencil sets for the reunion. They are cast in wood, look great, feel very comfortable to write with and cost $25 a set. Phil has done very well with these. The sets are part of the memorabilia package we have for sale. Let me know if you want one.

I have updated the ad for ‘The Wake’. It reflects – ‘we are talking about 2017 Remembrance Day and an updated list of starters and potential starters plus some more apologies’.

Have been in contact with the Command Chaplain organization. The dedication for Dick Lewin and Checkers Aldridge is expected to be in February 2018. Exact date not known at this time.

Does anybody out there contribute to the Australian National Maritime Museum publication called ‘Signals’. It is published quarterly. The reason I ask, is, I recall talk about people in our group who when they were very young were force migrated to Western Australia from UK as orphans and were placed in the rural community. I am not sure I know of any. Do you know anybody who fits into this group. There is an article about this group of kids arriving in Fremantle in 1947. This of course makes them too old for our group but, could have been forerunners to our people. In the same edition there is a story about the history of HMAS TINGIRA pre and post commissioning and where she lies today. Plenty of really good stuff in this dit.

Spike Jones dropped me an email asking about Bob Vitenbergs and Phil Clements mentioned he was keen to get in touch with Harold Hunt. Can you help. I have had RTS for the birthday cards for Robin Mackinnon, Barry Nichols and Henry Overmars, if you have any contact details for these blokes, please let me know.
In the Attachment this week. There are major upgrades for GI(East) proposed and a video to prove it, the battle of Beersheba, an article on the US Navy sacking a CO and XO for colliding with a ship in the Far East and a few jokes.

Have you changed your postal address and not let me know. If you have, please let me update our database. I keep it safe and it will not be put on any website. G’day All. School holidays, don’t you love them. Flat out with kids, we are having fun.

Spoke to Gary Angel during the week about Remembrance Day at Darling Harbour, have included an additional attachment, advertising this get together.

I am having a little problem with formatting the Attachment. Please play with it a little to see the lot.

Have received one life resume, please forward yours.

Have real good news about Brent Balchin, he is now in the recovery stage, he has battled through horrific injuries and his survival is testament to his character, his recovery I think you can put down to Sue his wife. She is terrific. She has been forwarding out reports every afternoon. This is a typical message which I just received ‘Our weather forecast talks about late storms and as I walked home I could see it gathering in the distance. Today was a reasonably quiet day for Brent except an X-ray on his left ankle and foot. He snoozed and talked and even managed to try and write his name. I stayed late to tempt him to eat some dinner as his food tube has blocked which means if he doesn't eat enough real food they will replace it tomorrow which he knows is an uncomfortable trial for him. He only managed a few spoons of soup and main course, but it's a start. Let's hope he eats enough breakfast. He's feeling very flat therefore uninterested in food, he told the nurse so she's documented that. Have a good week everyone and big hugs to you all. Sue Brent and Judy xxx’

We have 53 starters for the weekend of 27-29 October in Canberra. Jeff and Kaye Dunn are the latest to sign up. If you do want to go, please contact Barry and Margaret Parker yyandamurra@bigpond.com to record your interest. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

Have you changed your postal address and not let me know. If you have, please let me update our database. I keep it safe and it will not be put on any website. www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. We have just spent the week at Moe at the Inline Hockey National Championships with two of our Grandkids participating. Great week, beautiful place, but bloody cold. Some days it made 10 degrees, blew a gale, and then a sunny 16, reminds me of CERBERUS. We are spending the night at Seymour and had a look at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Well worth the visit.

I mentioned last week about service information needed whenever one of us passes over the bar. (Have been reminded we are all lining up) Fortunately, we are a robust group, I have been forwarded two links which will help with the info. Please pass these on to your NOK. This plus plenty more are in the Attachment.

Spoke to Rod Hazell and Nev Barry during the week, Rod, had been in the East for the HOBART Commissioning and is in Melbourne for the Grand Final, know he favoured the Tigers. Nev, sounded well, he is a little bored now his daughter has closed the shop at Murray Falls, but still enjoying life in beautiful Far North Queensland.

Rod Hazell visited Brent Balchin at ‘The Albert’ hospital in Melbourne. Brent did not recognize him. He is still really crook. Each day he has to overcome a milestone just to survive. His wife Sue has been forwarding out reports every afternoon. Our thoughts are with him.

For those who were confused or unsure of the dress code for the Saturday Night major function (Coat and Tie) there will be NO medals worn. G’day All. You all need to know Checkers Aldridge passed away Friday evening last; he was seriously ill and suffered for some time. I have spoken to his wife Phyllis and she has indicated funeral details will be known late Monday. Watch this space. Checkers was a legend, he was so well known around the Fleet and GI, nobody had to know his surname, only Checkers.

Phyllis wanted to know the exact date Checkers left Navy. I couldn’t tell her off hand. What I am getting at is – let your partner or me know your details, postings and discharge dates, it can save you wife or kids a lot of heartache.

I feel I am repeating myself but Brent Balchin is still battling away at ‘The Albert’ hospital in Melbourne. He is still really crook, still having major surgery each and every day. He has now been diagnosed with a stroke. It appears he is lapsing in and out of consciousness. Our thoughts are with him.

Ken Railton has contributed to this week’s Attachment. Ross Gowers has found our site and has contacted us. Other blokes responding to the birthday cards, people you may not have heard from for some time. Look at the list below. A good read.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 3 September 2017
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Back in Sydney after a couple of months in FNQ, must admit I am looking forward to next year already to return to God’s Country. Going through three and a half months of mail has been anything but fun. Have had the following birthday cards returned. I forwarded the cards to the address I have on my data base for Ron Pope, Ron Mitchell, Barry Nichols and Henry Overmars.

Have been in contact with Di Lewin, she is happy for us to have a Dedication Plaque inserted in the GI Chapel (Sydney) for him. Rob Cavanagh has stepped up and will present a eulogy on our behalf. Please watch this space for further details.

As advised last week Brent Balchin had a major accident whilst walking across a road under the sanctuary of ‘Green Lights’ in suburbia Launceston. He was hit by a bus and is in a very bad way in hospital.

A precise of his condition – he has been transferred from Launceston Hospital to ‘The Albert’ in Melbourne, he is still in an induced coma, he has had multiple internal operations, he does not have an area in his body that does not require major repair. There is hope that some of the broken bones may be set tomorrow. He has been too unwell to do these tasks earlier. His wife Sue is in Melbourne with him. Fortunately, Marty Grogan is still working at CERBERUS and is also on standby to assist if necessary.

You may all remember Brent is the bloke that provides our group with the brilliant posters. Many of you have them in your home now. His generosity to our group is outstanding. He provides the posters to us for free and we have auctioned them to gather funds for our group. He also does a lot of work for the CERBERUS Museum where his best mate Marty Grogan is the curator. His love of Navy is unquestioned. He is a bloke who you would want to be with when you are in the trenches. Get well soon Brent.

Does anybody remember David McFarlane, he was in Yagan 2, Mokare 1, then became a Writer, not sure how long he spent in the Puss. He has recently contacted me by snail mail with his contact details.

Does anybody remember Noel Donnelly, his death notice was in the paper on Friday last. He would have been a LS/PO when we joined. He was the Foc’sle PO on VOYAGER on the night of the collision. Played Rugby at IS level for Navy, paid off as a WOCOXN. Great bloke, great Coxswain and real character, a sad loss. Another of Navy’s legends gone.

For those who were confused or unsure of the dress code for the Saturday Night major function (Coat and Tie) there will be NO medals worn. We have 55 starters for the weekend of 27-29 October in Canberra. Jeff and Kaye Dunn are the latest to sign up. G’day All. As advised earlier, Dick Lewin passed over the bar ron 16 August and was buried in Gatton on Friday 25 August. Rob Cavanagh and Russ Loane attended the service. Rob forwarded some pics which have been placed on our Facebook Page. There is one of these pics in the attachment with some comments from Rob.

Dick will be sorely missed, one of the quiet achiever’s in this world. Loved everything Navy, particularly Submarines where he was a Boat Coxswain. He has been described as the salt of the earth type of bloke, these comments I would like to endorse. He and his wife were particularly unlucky; in 2015 they lost their son who had joined the RAN in his 40’s, unfortunately he didn’t complete his Recruit - Specialist Course as he had a Melanoma. Dick was keen on our group and was keen to progress it; he kept in occasional contact with me, he also attended our major functions whenever he could.

Brent Balchin has had a major accident whilst walking across a road under the sanctuary of ‘Green Lights’ in suburbia Launceston. He was hit by a bus and is in a very bad way in hospital. He has been placed in an induced coma for 3 days – that’s how crook he is. Marty Grogan has been keeping us informed of his struggle. Receiving updates at least every 24 hours. As of 1700 today he is not out of the woods yet as he suffered major internal and external injuries. He has had 10 specialists working on him. Brent is a fighter, he is responding to treatment and although nobody knows how he is going to respond psychologically, when he comes out of the coma, (They are starting to reduce the amount of medicine needed to stay in a coma) where there is life there is hope. We are all thinking of him and wishing him all the best for a speedy recovery.

You may all remember Brent is the bloke that provides our group with the brilliant posters. Many of you have them in your home now. His genorosity to our group is outstanding.

G’day All. Big couple of months for our group coming up. Dubbo Bowls in September, Reunion in October in Canberra and the ‘Wake’ to be held at the Maritime Museum on Remembrance Day sponsored by Gary Angel. I am looking forward to all of them.

Tassy Mason is the only starter to date for the Long Tan ceremony on 18 August in Sydney. Does anybody want to join him.

Had a response from Brose Palmer a mate and EXJR who is attending a function for his group, he is interested in using Hector’s poster for their reunion. Pretty good recommendation, I reckon!

G’day All. Hector Hart has done a brilliant job by producing a brilliant poster for our reunion. A copy is in Attachment 2. This is for sale for a very moderate price, have a look at the poster, the details and I will be surprised if you are not interested.

Tassy Mason is the only starter to date for the Long Tan ceremony on 18 August in Sydney. Does anybody want to join him.

We have 57 starters for the weekend of 27-29 October in Canberra. Pie and Ros Pieda are the latest to sign up. Thanks very much for all those who responded to the little survey from last week. There was a myriad of reasons you aren’t attending, sickness, travel and rival reunion commitments were prominent; reunion fatigue was also mentioned.

If you do want to go, please contact Barry and Margaret Parker yyandamurra@bigpond.com to record your interest. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

Dubbo AIF bowls commences with a day competition on Sunday 10 September then the main games commence on Tuesday 12 September for three days. To date we have Tom Houldsworth, Doug Wilson, Russ Loane and myself are definites and Bruck Pollock, Dave Pescott and Jack Davey are possibles. Tom Houldsworth is running with this, so please contact Tom. It is time to think about accommodation. Tom has been advised we will be playing at West Dubbo. This is walking distance to the Big 4 Caravan Park which services the Dubbo Zoo.

Have some birthday responses from Ron Lockwood, Errol Delaney, Tony Zajer and Rob Cavanagh. There is plenty to read in this edition past and future articles relating to defence are interesting and some pretty funny jokes. Hope you enjoy

G’day All. Another quiet week at Kurrimine Beach. A few fish, but absolutely nothing to get excited about.

We must all congratulate and be proud of Jeff Wake who has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday list for his contribution to assisting Veterans and Veterans families in WA.

Is anybody going to participate in the Long Tan ceremonies on 18 August.

Have been in contact with Mal Chatfield the co-treasurer, he is keeping our group honest.

Two members of our hard working committee celebrate their birthdays this weekend, Barry Parker and Hector Hart. Happy Birthday blokes.

We have 55 starters for the weekend of 27-29 October. Buck (Terry) Rogers is the latest to sign up. This is the lowest number we have had for a reunion. Was wondering why. If you aren’t going is it because:

a. You are travelling elsewhere;
b. It is too far from home;
c. Am not well enough or wife too crook to travel;
d. Have been to previous functions and need a break;
e. Better offer somewhere else;
f. Too close to other functions, e.g. HOBART’s commissioning;
g. Have had enough of reunions; and
h. Other

Please give some feedback, nobody will be offended by your point of view. But it will give us an idea on the way ahead.

If you do want to go, please contact Barry and Margaret Parker yyandamurra@bigpond.com to record your interest. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

The Canberra Yacht Club & the boat management have stated they need to be provided with all surnames of persons entering the club & for the manifest on the boat. Margaret Parker will contact all those who have indicated they will be enjoying the sojourn on the Lake.

Dubbo AIF bowls commences with a day competition on Sunday 10 September then the main games commence on Tuesday 12 September for three days. I know it is close to our reunion in Canberra, however, if you want to play please let me know.

Doug Wilson’s club at Bateau Bay has a fire sale happening, this includes Royal blue bowls slacks. I say that, as we are using the Royal Blue slacks and our polo shirt as our official rig. If you need slacks please let him know.

Have you changed your postal address and not let me know. If you have, please let me update our data base. I keep it safe and it will not be put on any website. G’day All. Had a yarn with Doug Wilson and Rod Hazell during this week. Both are well. I am kidless for a few weeks so am looking forward to catching up on a bit of fishing as the weather is pretty good. There is some new information for our AIF bowlers included below.

Davo forwarded this article on the Gold Card:

On the Gold Card.

Now that some of you veterans have crept past the age of 70 years, you may not be aware that you, or a mate, are entitled to a Gold Card from DVA. Even if you have never made a claim on DVA for a disability, it doesn't matter. It's an entitlement. And we think there may be thousands of you, who can gain financially, and get treatment benefits hither to disadvantaged by out of pocket expenses. It only take a phone call to DVAmon 133254 and the process is easy.

Some interesting history in this week’s attachment. Another strike by part time sailors; these blokes were legends. We have 5 by 70 year old birthday boys. A few pics of familiar faces and of course a few jokes.

Remember the weekend of 27-29 October is the date you need to put into your calendar. Great dates for a big bash. While you are there make a week of it, Canberra is a city with a lot to see and offer, take advantage of the opportunity.

The Canberra Yacht Club & the boat management have stated they need to be provided with all surnames of persons entering the club & for the manifest on the boat. Margaret Parker will contact all those who have indicated they will be enjoying the sojourn on the Lake.

Really, it is time to make the decision whether you want to go to the Canberra function or not. Believe it or not, you are still alive and ready to go for the next couple of years, don’t waste your time. Get onboard, meet your mates and have a good time. Spend more than a few days there as Canberra has a lot of really good places to see which are very interesting. Contact Barry and Margaret Parker yyandamurra@bigpond.com to record your interest. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.
