Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 25 July 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Caught up with George and Carol Pike at Kurrimine Beach for coffee on Friday morning.  They may be on the road touring the island in the near future.

I have received an account written by a Stoker onboard VOYAGER the night of the collision.  If the report is authentic, he was in the Stokers Mess which was down aft.  It is a good read.  If anybody would like to read it please let me know.  Have asked the ‘Survivors of VOYAGER Association’ if they know anything about it.

Shep is investigating the way ahead to ensure the JR Report is registered as a document.

The report was not meant to be controversial, it merely reflects what you experienced in LEEUWIN.  I have included it in our website, however there is a glich, it is on the site but the page is not showing.  I have asked for assistance.

Dedication Ceremonies are on hold.  Unfortunately, the chapel is being renovated and the Ceremonies are not being scheduled.  Will let you know as further info comes to hand.  We have lost a few in the last 12 months.

Could you please note my email address changed a couple of months ago.  It is rugbyron1@gmail.com

Terry Dack advises the same deal which was available this year for the Tasmanian Ferry service will be available for next March when we travel to Ulverstone.  Please let me know whether you want to be a starter.  As discussed earlier this will be a perfect opportunity to travel to Tasmania and catch up with your group.

Each week I publish a Weekly News and Attachment.  Ii enjoy doing it, however, occasionally the emails do not hit.  Sometime they go into your spam folder or go into the ether.  Please let me know if you haven’t received the weekly rag.  Additionally, you can look online at our website (address at top of page) as both documents should have been posted there.

The Dubbo AIF Carnival is being held again in Dubbo this year in September.  Do you want to play.  If you do, please let me know and I can send you the details.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 60th anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers, Tank and Poolie), John Miscamble favours Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered, Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be, Dave Staines has offered to head up the organizing committee if we pick Yass.  Tom Houldsworth and Roger Collins have suggested The Gold Coast.  Ted Hase agrees with Tom and Roger.  Mal Chatfield has suggested the Sunshine Coast, however he is also happy for Bribie Island.  Stan Church thinks anywhere in Queensland.  Glenn Summerhayes would like Bribie Island. Do you have a point of view?

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   Bob Stupple is the most recent to ask.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Have built the Navy Rugby Web site.  The address:  https://www.ranrugby.com/   Those that played in LEEUWIN in 63 or elsewhere in the 60’s and 70’s or beyond may be interested.

Kaye Slotboom is interested in collecting data for anybody who is suffering from Asbestosis.  You may contact her on kaye.slotboom@icloud.com

If you want a polo shirt, size XXL there is one available.  Caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design have arrived.  All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging.  Shirts are $30, caps are $15.

Our FB Page needs updating.  The most recent pic contains George and Carol Pike at Kurrimine Beach.  Want to include your pics on this site please send them to me rugbyron@bigpond.com or Nev Thomas on unicom05@bigpond.net.au the site address is https://www.facebook.com/LEEUWIN1963  The easiest way for the non Facebook people to look at our pics and posts (if you do not have or do not want a FB account) is to go to our website and click on the link at the top of our page.

If anyone is travelling through Molong NSW, remember Jim Clegg and Liz have the only motel in that town. bookingsmolongmotorinn@gmail.com   Good way to catch up.

Give your mates a ring, send an SMS or an email, (and tell me about it) I am sure they would appreciate it.

Bev and I have purchased a ‘fishing shack’ at Manning Point.  It is an old onsite van in the Weeroona Caravan Park (pet friendly).  The Manning River one side, the Pacific Ocean the other.  250 metres to launch the boat and 500 metres to the Bowling Club.  Bev probably won’t spend a lot of time there as she is looking after her horse.  I intend commuting from Dee Why as often as possible.  If you are going past Taree, give me a call, the chances of me being at Manning Point will be good after August.

Cheers

Ron

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 18 July 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Caught up with James Carroll at the Atherton RSL yesterday for lunch and will be catching up with George and Carol Pike at Kurrimine Beach for coffee on Friday morning.

I have forwarded a submission to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.  Has anybody else?

The JR Report has been received by the Sea Power Centre and one of the historians commented on how well the report was written. (Congrats Shep). Have not received any response from the PM and Defence Minister; guess they have bigger issues to deal with.  Will let you know whether there are any other external comments as they come to hand.

The report was not meant to be controversial, it merely reflects what you experienced in LEEUWIN.  I have included it in our website, however there is a glich, it is on the site but the page is not showing.  I have asked for assistance.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 11 July 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  This week I forwarded our JR report out to some agencies.  Jan Railton and son Peter Railton, Prime Minister, Minister for Defence, NSW RSL President Jessie James, Ziggy Stegall MP, Senator Jacqui Lambie, Navy PR, Navy League Magazine, Admiral Chris Barrie RAN Rtd., Sea Power Centre, DFWA and Allan Jones.   I have received responses from Jan Railton, Jessie James, Senator Jacqui Lambie and the office of Ziggy Stegall MP (not her).  Am waiting to see whether other responses are in the mail.

The report is not meant to be controversial, it merely reflects what you experienced in LEEUWIN.  I have included it in our website, however there is a glich, it is on the site but the page is not showing.  I have asked our carrier for assistance.

An article written by a former Divisional Officer of those that were in Yagan 2 and then Mokare Division in 1963/64 is included.  Hector was an MCD Officer ad of course a contemporary of Ken Railton’s.

James Carroll rang today and reports he is well and is on the move.  Congratulations James.  I intend catching up with him in Atherton this Saturday.  For the Writers in our group the Writers function in Mildura has been cancelled.

Ross Gowers comments and Surfie Richards has the email list for our group in Victoria.

Dedication Ceremonies are on hold.  Unfortunately, the chapel is being renovated and the Ceremonies are not being scheduled.  Will let you know as further info comes to hand.  We have lost a few in the last 12 months.

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Bongo Di Betta has indicated he will be the co-ordinator to arrange the laying of a wreath on VAMPIRE on Remembrance Day.  Thanks Bongo.

As indicated earlier it is now time to promote our JR Survey.  Prior to doing this we would like to invite Jan Railton to read it prior to publication as it was her late husband who promoted it.  Mal Chatfield is helping to find her address.  Do any of you people know how to contact Jan?

Dedication Ceremonies are on hold.  Unfortunately, the chapel is being renovated and the Ceremonies are on hold.  Will let you know as further info comes to hand.  We have lost a few in the last 12 months.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 20 June 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Tomorrow is the beginning of the winter solstice, beauty, my favourite day of the year, the days begin to get longer.

Who would like to be the co-ordinator to arrange the laying of a wreath on VAMPIE on Remembrance Day.  You would need to contact and co-ordinate with the Australian Maritime Museum to gain approval and arrange the choreography on the day.  Our group will pay for the wreath.

You have all received notification of Les Barclay being awarded an OAM for his services to swimming.   Well, further congratulations are in order.  Look at this:  Don Churchward forwarded:

‘I don’t know if anyone else has contacted you but we also had another 1963 ex JR in Peter Johnson who was also awarded a OAM in the Queens Birthday Honours List. Pete joined from QLD with me in July “63 and was in Winjan 1 at Leeuwin. He was recognised for the work that he does for Veterans and POW’s. Pete now lives in Geelong and he and I served together on HMAS Perth during the 1st Vietnam deployment.

I have been trying to contact the Command Chaplain at Garden Island to determine the status of Dedication Ceremonies.  Unfortunately, the chapel is being renovated and the Ceremonies are on hold.  Will let you know as further info comes to hand.  We have lost a few in the last 12 months.

On another topic, I thought that the work that Shep put in on getting the survey together on our time at Leeuwin was excellent and made for interesting reading, I found quite a few comments that I had made in the initial questionnaire in there. I don’t for 1 minute regret being a JR and I’m sure that it turned most of us from boys to men even if we were a little wet behind the ears to start with.

Cheers

Don’

Pete’s email address is johno@hugonet.com.au

Shep has compiled and has forwarded his 2nd draft which is a very professional report on the JR Survey.  It makes very interesting reading.  You may have not responded or contributed, but you were there and may have an opinion.  Please let me know if you want to read the document and I will forward to you.  Comments to either Shep at winewort@yahoo.com.au or me at rugbyron1@gmail.com

In the preamble to presenting the report, I was hoping to add that the report had been read by our group and you either agreed it was a fair representation of what you experienced in LEEUWIN or had another opinion.  To date responses have been received from Shirley Rowland, Don, Missie, Pooley, Gary, Max, Brent and Ross; I thank you for your responses.  The survey is attached if you care to read and comment.  This is the last week for comments.

Cheers

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 13 June 2021

G’day All.  We met up at the Balaclava Hotel in Cairns on Tuesday.  Annie and Jerry Oakley, Ann Maree (Treasurer Edmonton sub-branch), George and Carol Pike, Tom and Val Houldsworth, James Carroll, Bruce Dawson, Bill Waldock and myself.  Had a lovely lunch, took a pic of the group (now on our FB page), told some lies and generally enjoyed ourselves.

Forgot to mention last week, but Monday two weeks ago caught up with Marilyn Fielding.  She is more than a possible for Ulverstone next year.

To date responses have been received from Missie, Pooley, Gary, Max, Brent and Ross; I thank you for your responses.  The survey is attached if you care to read and comment.

Mal has placed the order for the name tags.  He is coming to Sydney in the near future and will leave them with Bongo.  We will exchange as soon as possible.

If you want a polo shirt, size XXL there is one available.  Caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design have arrived.  All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging.  Shirts are $30, caps are $15.

Our FB Page needs updating.  The most recent pics include pics of some of our group at the Balaclava Hotel in Cairns and another of Mal Chatfield, Bongo Di Betta and Mal’s son in law Peter Von Spronsen onboard VAMPIRE at Darling Harbour.

If you are going past Taree, give me a call, the chances of me being at Manning Point will be good.  Mike Hogan came up and spent a few nights in January, we had a little fish as the seas were big as a consequence of the cyclone in the north, put the little tinnie in the river, chilled out around the shack for a couple of days, had a few convivials and had a good time.  Les Allen came up in March and again this last week on his way to the Lauriton Ukele meeting.  Sandy Powell visited Manning Point for a few days during April as he travelled north to commemorate ANZAC Day with his shipmates who he served with in HOBART.  We had a pleasant interlude.  Les Allen stayed in Old Bar and I caught up with him for coffee during a week in April.  Shep and Jean Shephard were meandering south from a Sunshine Coast Queensland car club meeting and stopped by for a cup of coffee.  Really good to see them.

Cheers

G’day All.  Who has been to Kurrimine Beach, lovely place to be this time of the year, especially if you have webbed feet or a liking for a little precipitation.  Just joking.

Met up with Rocky and Linda Freier who live near Bribie Island during the week, went fishing with Rocky and had a magnificent day on the water.  The hospitality received from the Freir’s was sensational.  Then later on in the week caught up with Disco and Pam Duck in Mackay.  It’s good to be alive.

In two days time, that is Tuesday, we are catching up for lunch at the Balaclava Hotel at 1200ish.  This will be a fun time.  Tom and Val Houldsworth, Bill Waldock, Annie and possibly Jerry Oakley, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, James Carroll, George and Carol Pike and myself are starters.  Please let me know if you wish to attend.  Where are you Charlie?  ‘Photos will be taken’

G’day All.  There are five of our group in Forster attending the Matelots Bowls.  Pics are on our FB page.

Have received no further correspondence from Boong Franklin.  Has anybody been in touch with him.

I have forwarded the list of names that will be engraved on our name tags to Mal.  We will be purchasing some additional blanks.  If you want one, let me know.

Shep has compiled a very professional report on the JR Survey.  It makes very interesting reading.  His report is now in the final editing stage.  It will be forwarded out to you on completion for comment.

There has been a breakthrough on PERTH’s breakaway song.  Marty Edwards has been in touch, he thinks it was the ‘William Tell Overture’ and now Terry Pitt has confirmed this.

Do you ever catch up with any of our group?  When you do, please take a pic and send it to me for our FB page.

Cheers

Ron

G’day All.  Who remembers Phil (Boong) Franklin?  Out of the blue, I received an email from him.  His last known address was in Indonesia.  He remarks on the severity of the Pandemic.  I think the last time I saw him was at our function in Palymra WA in 2009.  Sent the email to Quig’s also as I know he and Boong were mates.

Another of our personalities is have more than a rough trot.  Received this email from Kay Pascoe-Lambert.

‘Kay here Scott’s wife. Can you please take Scott off your mailing list?  He had a stroke just after Xmas which triggered suppressed PTSD and vascular dementia. He is now in care and in a very bad way mentally.  I wish i had known how much he had suppressed over the years but its too late now to help him.  Its all happened so fast.

He no longer has his phone and I will be cancelling his account.

I am still in touch with russell harwood and dave prest.

I will do my best to keep you updated. We have a lot of adjusting to do and its heartbreaking hearing him say he wants to come home but it’s just not possible.

Thanks Kay’

I have responded on the Groups behalf wishing Lamb Chops all the best.

I have forwarded the list of names that will be engraved on our name tags to Mal.  We will be purchasing some additional blanks.  If you want one, let me know.

Spoke to Annie Oakley during the week he has recently been elected President of the Edmonton RSL Sub Branch.   He reports there was a good turn out for ANZAC Day.  Congratulations to Annie.

G’day All.  Hope you have all commemorated ANZAC Day as you see fit.  I am in Sydney, unfortunately the Dee Why Beach ceremony was cancelled due to COVID which is a bugger.  We had a ‘ticketed’ service at DY RSL in lieu.  Pretty disappointing as DY beach is a brilliant setting and an event I really look forward to.  Later I went up to Mona Vale Bowls club and did a speaking part then played bowls; a pretty good day.

Gary Angel has a point of view on how Veterans are being treated by DVA.  He has suggested some changes.  Are you happy with DVA?  Jeff Wake also forwarded an article on DVA.  If you have a point of view for or against DVA please respond; looking forward to your emails.

Is anybody in contact with Trevor Elias; his email box is full for the third week in a row.  Is he OK?.

Mal has sent me a sample of our name tags, a copy is in the Attachment, have a bo-peep it looks really good.  If you want one, I need to know.  Cut off time for the name tags to be engraved is this week.

G’day All.  I haven’t received any funeral details for Max Hart.  Jeff Wake jeffwake@westnet.com.au is the point of contact for Max’s funeral.  My understanding is the date has not been selected yet as the family and authorities are awaiting on the results of the autopsy.

Sandy Michels has provided the link to Max’s tribute page if you wish to watch the funeral online.  https://etributes.seasons.com.au/etributes/maxwell-hart/

there is conflicting advice

This is the link which indicates the ceremony will occur at 1000 on 23 April.

Above is the link for Maxwell Foster Hart's eTribute page.

> 30 minutes prior to the service a button labelled *WEBCAST* will

> appear

> down the bottom left hand side of the page which once opened will

> Again this button will only appear 30 minutes prior and the

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 4 April 2021

G’day All.  Vale Max Hart:

‘Ron, I am writing this on Max Harts computer, I am his wife Dee.   Unfortunately, I have to inform you that Max passed away Thursday 1st April 2021.’

Max was a great bloke, always willing to contribute, always positive and happy, he will be sorely missed.

Happy Easter to all, unfortunately not happy for Dee Hart, her immediate and extended family and all Max’s mates.

Sox Stocking responded to PERTH breakaway song indicating ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’ might be the breakaway song, have now received further correspondence.  Thanks again Sox for your response.  Nothing would have been said had you not reacted.   Well I have now been reliably informed by Ken Dobbie (see under), Rod Hazell and Sandy Powell who have stated emphatically that ‘Ghost Riders in the sky’ was HOBART’s.  Still need to know PERTH’s breakaway song.  Was our group out of the posting cycle for Vietnam in PERTH?

‘The "breakaway song" Ghost Riders in the Sky is most definitely that compiled and still used to this day by Hobart. A flag was manufactured showing an angry looking Casper the Ghost. The flag images are in green reflecting on a statement made by Hanoi Hanna that the Hobart operated mystical like a ghost as it appeared on the North Vietnam coast to attack and then disappeared rather like a ghost. The green colour adopted on the flag was reference to the RAN's shipside grey which when compared with the US navy's colour appeared to be a shade of green. The flag is now in the possession of Hobart 111 and is used for all RAS activities.

Cheers

Ken D’

You may recall we as a group have been trying to locate Gerry Bandy for the last ten or so years.  Well he has been found, he is living in SW West Australia.  Norm Friebe who lives in Victoria, initiated this search; Rod Hazell, a good mate of Gerry’s who lives in the West went down and said G’day.  Rod reports Gerry is active and well.

Have received only twenty seven responses to the note on ‘name badges’ for our group.  The badge will contain the LEEUWIN crest and your preferred name.  This will cost you nothing (except postage if you want it delivered).  Very happy to include wives in this list.  Ask your missus/partner to see whether she would like one.   Could you please respond to me.

Shep has compiled the report on the JR Survey.  It makes very interesting reading.  In one instance he has compared the questions contained in our survey with other more formal reports of the past.  Because of the flood in the Mid North Coast we have had to postpone our meeting.  We are going to meet in the coming weeks to discuss the contents of his findings and the distribution of the report.

Again, thanks very much for your kind words and offer of assistance for my fishing shack in Manning Point.  Davo offered to give me his wood working tools.  What a marvelous offer.  Thanks again Davo.  Saying that, I am slowly putting it all together.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   Bob Stupple is the most recent to ask.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Les Allen came up in March and amongst other things got washed out and evacuated from the park.

Cheers

Ron

G’day All.  Have had another uninteresting week, cleaning up the mud from the fishing shack.  Surprisingly some of the electrical gear works although it was underwater.  Les Allen has returned to Newcastle area, he was in Manning Point until Saturday morning.  I have been busy with a credit card at Bunnings as all my electrical tools that were submerged have not responded to CPR.   Thank you very much for your good wishes.  It has just started raining again.  Bugger.

Sox Stocking responded to PERTH breakaway song:

I seem to remember the song that was played on breakaway on the Perth during the 1968/69 tour to Vietnam was “Ghost Riders in the Sky”? Could be wrong, but!!

Cheers,

Sox

Have received only sixteen responses to the note on ‘name badges’ for our group.  The badge will contain the LEEUWIN crest and your preferred name.  This will cost you nothing (except postage if you want it delivered).  We need to know:

  • Who would wear it; and
  • who would like one

Could you please respond to me.

Shep has compiled the report on the JR Survey.  It makes very interesting reading.  In one instance he has compared the questions contained in our survey with other more formal reports of the past.  Because of the flood in the Mid North Coast we have had to postpone our meeting.  We are going to meet in the coming weeks to discuss the contents of his findings and the distribution of the report.

The Matelots Bowls carnival is being held in Forster NSW for ex sailors and their spouses/partners, scheduled to start play early Sunday morning 9 May concluding on the evening of Thursday 13 May at the Presentation dinner.  If you wish to participate contact me as I am the Secretary.  Barry Andrew, Russ Loane and I are playing and Tom Houldsworth is going to attend to say G’day.  This is a real fun carnival, no money, just trophies.  No stacked teams.

Have information to hand which indicates the Interservice Rugby carnival for 2021 has been cancelled.  Bugger.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 21 March 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Been an interesting week.  Have met up with Les Allen this weekend in Manning Point.  Had lunch with Fred Howes, Pie Pieda, Dave Scarce, Chris and Val Smith and Borgo at Port Adelaide on Tuesday.  Spoke to Nifty Neville and Glen Butler when I was in Adelaide and have been speaking to Sandy Powell about DFRDB Commutation over the weekend.

Manning Point has been inundated with rain and water from the Manning River, we have been flooded out of the caravan park and were evacuated to private accommodation sharing with 6 others.  The Bowls Club is the SES station.  All good here just stranded.

Sandy brought to notice that the Federal Government will be discussing DFRDB Commutation tomorrow along with the proposal for a Royal Commission into Veteran’s suicide.  Two topics that interest me.  Must admit I don’t think a Royal Commission will achieve anything more than making a lot of lawyers rich.  I think picking the right Commissioner would realise a better result.

This would have been the weekend we would have been celebrating in Ulverstone.  Russ and Joy Dale met up with Rick and Lea Avery and have forwarded some pics to show us.  I am looking forward to 12 months time when I intend to be there hopefully sharing with you.

Have received only nine responses to the note on ‘name badges’ for our group.  The badge will contain the LEEUWIN crest and your preferred name.  This will cost you nothing (except postage if you want it delivered).  We need to know:

G’day All.  Have been having a problem with my bigpond email account (it will not send emails).  Have now set up the gmail account, my email address is rugbyron1@gmail.com

James Carroll is going back into surgery pretty soon.  He is hoping for a quick recovery so he can still go to Tasmania in March.  All the best James.

Have spoken this week by phone with Russ Loane, Norm Friebe, Rocky Freier, Sandy Powell and Jaffa.  Russ – Lawn Bowls, Norm – trying to locate Jerry Bandy.  Rod Hazell spent some time, some years ago trying to locate him without success.

To reiterate – Ulverstone 2020 has been postponed until March 2021.  If you didn’t receive notice earlier it is probably in your Spam or similar name folder.

Gary and Bernadette Angel have produced an article on TINGIRA boy William Evan Allen.   This bloke is a legend, he has slipped under the radar of most but not the Angel’s.  Have a read, if you have a comment please contact Gary, his email is included.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 60th anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers, Tank and Poolie), John Miscamble, Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered, Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be, Dave Staines has offered to head up the organizing committee if we pick Yass and Tom Houldsworth and Roger Collins have suggested The Gold Coast.  Mal Chatfield has suggested the Sunshine Coast, however he is also happy for Bribie Island.  Stan Church thinks anywhere in Queensland.  Glenn Summerhayes would like Bribie Island. G’day All.  We had a good turnout for our annual pilgrimage to Husky this year.  Successfully ate our way through the three meals, lunch dinner and breakfast at three different venues.  The banter was up to its usual high standard as was the company and the quality of the meals.  Les Allan and Ted and Fiona Hase attended for the first time this year this year.   Mick Gallagher handed the LEEUWIN 63 JR of the year trophy to Mal Chatfield vide Bongo (who is going to the Gold Coast in April).   The ceremony in VOYAGER Park was professionally conducted by personnel from CRESWELL lead by the Padre.  Tom and Val Houldsworth again provided a wreath on behalf of our group and Tom presented it.  There were 7 VOYAGER survivors in attendance, included in this number was the Bosuns Mate who was in the Wheelhouse at the time of the collision.   Ray and Rosalind Cattermole, Schubes and Marian Schubert, Sandy Powell, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Mick Gallagher, Hoges and Jilly Hogan, Bongo and Jo DiBetta, Russ and Georgina Nelson, John and Lyn Hatchman, Les Allen, Shep and Jean Shephard, Spook Cairns with his family (Banjo, Jesse, Charlie, Rebecca Cairns and Joshua), Ted and Fiona Hase and Ron Giveen.   Received calls from Hector Hart and Rod Hazell when we were there.  Have also received apologies from Bristles and Lou Lassau.

Had coffee with Bristles and Lou plus Lou’s sister Rosalind and brother in law Peter this morning in Harrington.  They were up from the South Coast.  Unfortunately I forgot to take a pic to include on our FB page.

James Carroll is going back into surgery pretty soon.  He is hoping for a quick recovery so he can still go to Tasmania in March.  All the best James.

Have spoken today by phone with Rod Hazell and Les Allen.  Yesterday with Bruce Pollock, Gary Angel and James Carroll.

Gary and Bernadette Angel have produced an article on TINGIRA boy William Evan Allen.   This bloke is a legend, he has slipped under the radar of most but not the Angel’s.  Have a read, if you have a comment please contact Gary, his email is included.

Have you received from me the deposit you made for Ulverstone 2021 yet.  There are several outstanding.  Did you want to leave it for next year?  Just send me your bank details and I will credit it.

Do you have a point of view?

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   Bob Stupple is the most recent to ask.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Cheers

Ron

G’day All.  Put Wednesday 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  It is only 11 days away.  Make a holiday of it, lovely place to be this time of the year.   Mike and Jean Shephard, John and Lynne Hatchman, Schubes and Marian, Moot Sutton, Sandy Powell, Spook, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Ted and Fiona Hase, Bongo and Jo DiBetta, Mick Gallagher (with JR Shield), Ray and Roz Cattermole and myself are starters.   Let me know if you want to attend for dinner at Club JB and/or breakfast at corner cafe.

Hope you all enjoyed Australia Day, it is a pretty quiet affair in Manning Point.  Lots of flags and people with Ozzie tattoos and of course parties, but no activities that are formally organized.

Have received one comment on Shep’s work on the JR Survey.  Mal Ritchie words are in the Attachment.

G’day All.  Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  It is only 18 days away.  The state borders are clear, I think.  Staying in Manning Point, not watching much TV, just vegging out is pretty good, just doesn’t put me in touch with current affairs.   Mike and Jean Shephard, John and Lynne Hatchman, Schubes and Marian, Moot Sutton, Sandy Powell, Spook, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Ted and Fiona Hase and myself are starters.

G’day All.  For those of you who may be still keen to go to Tassie in March; the Tasmanian Government has offered free/discount travel for those driving and with vans.  If you want any further info check the website.  I hadn’t ordered the shirts, deadline was today, so will now wait until this time next year to put in the order.  Nearly had to put a slash through the year on our banner as I have had it in being updated.  The people who are doing the job live in the Northern part of the Northern Beaches and have not been able to work.  He was worried we needed the banner this week and rang me not long after I released the email postponing the function.  We had a win there.

Thanks very much to Terry Dack, Mal Chatfield, Bongo Dibetta and Stoney Bourke for all their hard work trying to put this function together.  Hopefully they will put their hands up for next year.  I have received confirmation from Stoney indicating he will still be happy to help us again.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike and Jean Shephard, John Hatchman, Schubes, Moot Sutton, Sandy Powell, Spook, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Russ and Georgina Nelson and myself are starters.

Shep’s work on the JR Survey is included this week in totlal  Really good reading.

Thanks to Boong for following up Col Mundt.  Have sent him an email.

The seven past recipients of the LEEUWIN 63 JR of the year have been at work again.  This year there were 8 blokes nominated and as you may know the award cannot be won twice.  Some new names, some who have contributed continually over the life of our group.  A diverse group who still help to keep us together.  This year’s winner is a bloke who rang me in 2002 and asked if we would like to combine the two intakes who joined LEEUWIN in 1963 into a group.  He then was instrumental in organizing the next two major functions at the Gold Coast 2003 and 2005 where he had positive assistance from his wife Robyn and family.  In 2003 we opened a bank account, from then until now he is the co-treasurer of our group.  In 2020 he came forward and put his name up to be part of the committee for the Ulverstone Wake in March 2021.  Of course I am talking about Mal Chatfield.  On behalf of the previous winners we congratulate you on the award and thank you for your contribution.  The presentation date will be promulgated

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 3 January 2021

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  We have escaped the Lockdown after 17 days.  The northern part of the Northern Beaches has at least another week inhouse.  I came up to Manning Point this morning.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike and Jean Shephard, John Hatchman, Schubes, Moot Sutton, Sandy Powell, Spook, Tom and Val Houldsworth  and myself are starters.

ULVERSTONE 19-21 MARCH 2021

Please send me your shirt size and whether you want long or short sleeve ASAP, I intend order during the week commencing 10 January.

Friday 19 Meet and Greet – Buttons Brewing

Saturday 20 Dinner – Bass and Flinders Motel

Sunday 21 BBQ Lunch SHROPSHIRE Park

We will be providing all EXJR’s who attend a chambray shirt.  Please send me your preference of short or long sleeve (they will have a pocket and the LEEUWIN logo with 1963) and size.  We will need a few months turnover time for the Chambray shirts, so if you are attending and want a shirt please forward your size.  If you don’t want a shirt, could you also please let me know.

Of course, with another cluster infection occurring, it makes one think of where are we going and in our group’s view, is it safe to go to Ulverstone in March.  The positive consequence of this cluster in my view relates to the NSW Government strengthening its resolve to constrain the International aircrews to 2 Sydney motels which also includes NSW Police Security to keep tabs on them.  This should close the loop on Airline crews being able to travel independently.  Ergo Ulverstone is still very doable.  I have booked accommodation, travel and car hire.  I took out a little insurance on the air fares.

Shep’s work on the JR Survey is included (partially) this week (responses to questions 5 and 6).  Really good reading.  If you haven’t contributed to the survey as yet and want to, please let me know.  Shep is happy to accommodate the late responses.

Has anybody been in contact with Col Mundt.  Col was in the FAA, I am surprised nobody is in contact with him.  Have received ‘return to sender’ on the snail mail Newsletter that was forwarded out. If you have either a mobile phone number or an email address could you please forward to me, or contact him yourself and ask him to get in contact with me.  I have caught up with Henry Overmars.

The article about ‘Athletics’ at LEEUWIN created interest. I received several emails from participants and spectators.  Reminiscing.

The working committee for the wake in Ulverstone is Mal Chatfield, Bongo Di Betta, Terry Dack, Stoney Bourke (assisting) and Ron Giveen.

The cost for the 3 functions is $75 a head.  Please pay by 31 January 2021.  Details of our account are:

LEEUWIN 1963

BSB       032 003

Account Number  307469

This is a low cost series of functions.  If COVID 19 prevents our attendance the money will be refunded.  This is also the case for accommodation as the Motel people are aware of travel conditions.  I suppose what I am saying is if you have withdrawn from attending because of the COVID travel uncertainty and haven’t planned any other activity please tentatively rethink Ulverstone.   I am confident we will enjoy ourselves and want you to be there to share it with us.  Had a yarn with Fred Auty on Chritmas Day, he indicated he wants to be a starter for Ulverstone.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   Bob Stupple is the most recent to ask.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

150 metres to launch the boat and 500 metres to the Bowling Club.  Bev probably won’t spend a lot of time there as she is looking after her horse.  I intend commuting from Dee Why as often as possible.  If you are going past Taree, give me a call, the chances of me being at Manning Point will be good.

Cheers

Ron
