G’day All.  Merry Christmas everybody.  Really hope you have an enjoyable time with your loved ones.  No Weekly News next weekend so two birthday lists today.

Have received the ‘under two ensigns’ pins.  I have also ordered the ‘under two ensigns’ plaques, they are being manufactured now, so hope to receive them in the new year.  When I receive them I will forward out those who have ordered both items of memorabilia.  If you want to order a pin, please let me know.

I won’t be ordering the shirts for some time yet.  Look below for those who are attending next year’s function on the Gold Coast and want a free polo shirt.  If you are attending just send me your size.

Spoke to Davo during the week; he tells me he won’t be travelling far from home in the future as he has been diagnosed with further medical issues.  All the best Davo.

It is just on two months before we meet in Huskisson for the Commemoration Ceremony for the loss of life for those in VOYAGER.  59 years ago.  Are you going to attend.  Have been told Shep and Jean, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Vern Passfield and a mate, plus Sandy Powell and myself will be there.

Boong Bartlett forwarded this:

I was HMAS Albatross in about 1968 and one of the mates was doing a course on doing drawings for commercial places. Here are three I found a few days ago hidden under one of our beds he did about me. When I was on the Melbourne, I used to hear a big Thursday Islander, Mick Mara, yell at me as I walked through the cafeteria, "Hey Boong". I look up and he was laughing his head off. Still back then we did not have all this bullshit that we have today.

I hope you enjoy the drawings as I have shown some of them to ex military mates and they laughed their heads off.

Merry Christmas to all and hope that 2023 brings everything they hope will happen, does so.

You can see these cartoons at the bottom of the page of http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/weekly-news-2022/

Cheers,
Trevor "Boong" Bartlett.

Brent Balchin has forwarded us a book to auction at our function on the GC next year.  It is ‘The first 75 years of the RAN’.  What is special about this you ask.  This book is magnificent.  I don’t think it is a book to go into your library, rather it is one that needs to be on hand where everybody can see it.  Your RSL or Navy association would be appropriate.  It has photograph plates in it not just images.  The book is large, it is in imperial terms about 16 x 14.  There are a few pics of it on our website at http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/functions-and-reunions/

The pics I have taken do not do it justice.  Proceeds of the auction will be given to the AWM.  Who wants to be the auctioneer.

Happy Birthday to Ted, Ross, Wally, Tom, Henry, Tank and Doug for this week’s birthdays.  Hope you enjoy your special day with your family and friends.

G’day All.  Jim Clegg rang today, he is still in hospital.  The Molong Motel was seriously affected by the recent floods in the downstairs areas, top deck remained OK.  They are in the process of rescuing and repairing the damage in an effort to get the business underway again.

During the week I also spoke to Sandy Powell, Rocky Freier (still in hospital 0439 373 855) and Russ Loane.

John Hatchman has provided further info on the Bereavement issues which includes ‘logon’s and passwords for devices’.  (The trap though is to make sure whenever you change your login or password you need to update your bereavement list.  You can view this advice on  http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/bereavement-advice/

G’day All.  Roger Collins has forwarded further cheaper accommodation advice for former Defence Force people ‘like us’.  I am aware of it through other blokes; I recall Narra and Rocky Freier recommending it over the years.  I have now booked for Bev and I.  There is a 5 day minimum period for booking.  The garden suites are cheaper than the ocean views.  They want a $200 advance deposit.

Roger’s email

For info of those attending, and looking for accommodation, there is first class accommodation available at;

About 8-9k to CurrumbinRSL and 5k from Coolangatta airport.

Best Regards. Roger

Rod Hazell rang and indicated he had spoke to Jim Clegg who with his wife own the motel at Molong.  You may recall Molong was the town under serious siege by the flood this time last week.  Rod reports Jim is in hospital but he is OK.  The motel came under serious flooding.  Not sure of the current status.

Bongo’s contact in the AMM is a former sailor ‘Scott’.  Scott is a good bloke and wants to help us.  He indicated there will be invitations promulgated to our group for those who would like to do a short trip in VAMPIRE.  She will be moving to the Captain Cook Dry Dock this year and returning to Darling Harbour on 14 February doing a cold move from GI, vide Cockatoo Island.  Anybody who is interested in either trip please let me know.  Shep want’s VAMPIRE to transit from GI to the Rocker’s.  What a gig.  Gets my vote.

Rocky Freier is crook, he is back in hospital after having a hip replacement.  Give him a call on 0439372855.  Ross Gower let me know he had contacted Rocky.  I spoke to him today, he is still in hospital and not sure of his status when he is due to leave or be operated on again.

G’day All.  Vale Fred Auty.  Fred passed over the bar on Friday 11 November, Remembrance Day.  Marty Grogan let me know.  Marty in one of his many roles attends the Naval Funeral ceremonies in Victoria.  He has forwarded further advice indicating Fred’s funeral will be a private service.  Marty will attend the scattering of Fred’s ashes at Mount Macedon early next year.  Smooth seas Fred.   Additionally, Fred had one of his friends ‘Megan’ ring to let our group know he passed away.  Megan stated he passed away quietly in hospital.  Fred asked Megan to promise she would tell us.  Fred paid off as a CPOCOXN, I imagine with that background he was an organized man.

The Remembrance Day ceremony in VAMPIRE was a success.  21 people assembled on the focsle for the ceremony conducted by Bongo.  After morning tea, the majority of us had a drink at the Pymont Bay Bridge pub.  There is a pic and the names of those attended on our FB page.  Click on the link above.   Toby Turner and Gary Angel forwarded their respective apologies.  Hope to catch up soon with you blokes.

Rocky Freier is crook, he is back in hospital after having a hip replacement.  Give him a call on 0439372855.  Wally Gawne is out of hospital and home and recovering.

Happy Birthday Shiner, Sos, Stevan, John and Dave.  Hope you all enjoy your special day with your family and friends.

Would you like an ‘Under two ensigns’ pin.  They are larger than the ones we currently use.  If we get enough numbers and you are happy to wait to you see me they would be worth around $5 otherwise postage will need to be added.  Interest has been received from Jim Bush, Ross Muller, George Pike, Sandy Michels wants two; Ken Scarisbrick is also interested.

During the week, besides catching up with the folk at Darling Harbour, I was in contact with Rocky Freier, Wally Gawne, Marty Grogan, Fred Howes and Jaffa.

Wally is recovering well after his knee replacement last Wednesday, he has been in rehabilitation since Friday, should come home this Friday. He is doing great, and enjoying the 5* meals. I told him if he complains about the meals when he comes home, he can cook his own. He has gone to using 2 crutches to 1 walking stick today. Anyone can call him on 0408869764, cheers

For the Rugby heads, RANRU and now Australian Services have beaten the respective KIWI teams this year.  Australian Services game was yesterday 29-22.  It was the first time they had beaten them.  Well done to all.

I have been having problems with the website recently and have deleted most of this year’s Weekly News.  Let me know if you would like to see a particular week.

G’day All.  Very quiet week.

Look below for those who are attending next year’s function on the Gold Coast and want a free polo shirt.  If you are attending just send me your size.

It is just on two months before we meet in Huskisson for the Commemoration Ceremony for the loss of life for those in VOYAGER.  59 years ago.  Are you going to attend.  Have been told Shep and Jean, Vern Passfield and a mate, plus Sandy Powell and myself will be there.

Happy Birthday to Boong.  Hope you enjoy your special day with your family and friends.

I have ordered 50 ‘Under two ensigns’ pin.  They are larger than the ones we currently use.  Because of our small order the price has increased to close on seven dollars each.  Interest has been received from Tom Houldsworth, Rick Avey (2), Knocker Whyte (2), Rob Cavanagh, John Hatchman, Mike Hogan, Jim Bush, Ross Muller, George Pike, Sandy Michels wants two; Ken Scarisbrick, Glenn Summerhayes and Glenn Forno are also interested.  They are on the way.  If you want one forwarded to you, postage will be extra.  Will let you know when received.

Still taking orders for the ‘Under two ensigns’ crest.  Cost $40 if picked up at Currumbin or $50 if you want it posted.

During the week I spoke to Jaffa.  Told you it was a quiet week.

Bongo’s contact in the AMM is a former sailor ‘Scott’.  Scott is a good bloke and wants to help us.  He indicated there will be invitations promulgated to our group (that is you) for those who would like to do a short trip in VAMPIRE. I think he is dreaming.  John Hatchman, Russ Loane, Noel McKay and Pedro Franklin have indicated they would like to do the February move.

92 people have indicated they would like to attend Currumbin next year.  Your group is providing a free polo shirt for those attending.  It will have the ‘Under two Ensigns’ insignia on the left side pocket.  If you haven’t already, please let me know your size.   You can check your status and everything else including if your oppo is turning up plus accommodation options at:

Happy Birthday Tom, Barry, Peewee, John, Phil, Bockie, Phil and Charley.  Hope you all enjoy your special day with your family and friends.

John Hatchman has provided info on Bereavement issues.  You can view this advice on  http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/bereavement-advice/

Glen Forno, Tom Kinross and Knocker Whyte also contributed.

I have ordered 50 ‘Under two ensigns’ pin.  They are larger than the ones we currently use.  Because of our small order the price has increased to close on seven dollars each.  Interest has been received from Mike Hogan, Jim Bush, Ross Muller, George Pike, Sandy Michels wants two; Ken Scarisbrick, Glenn Summerhayes and Glenn Forno are also interested.  They are on the way.  If you want them forwarded to you postage will be extra.  Will let you know when received.

James Carroll has been in contact with Tangles Toolan, he met him at the local gym in Atherton.

Spoke to Nev Barry today, he indicated he had received emails which he considered corrupt from Peewee and Sarge.

During the week I was in contact with Rocky Freier, Peewee, Nev Barry, James Carroll and Rod Hazell, .

92 people have indicated they would like to attend Currumbin next year.

Rocky Freier is crook, he is back in hospital after having a hip replacement.  Give him a call on 0439372855.  Wally Gawne is out of hospital and home and recovering.

By Boong Bartlett

Cheers,
Trevor "Boong" Bartlett.
