45th 1963 Reunion – Wash-Up by Barry Quigley
Photos by Mick Gallagher

Thursday 10 Apr 2008 Meet & Greet

Attendance 102

Venue Bicton-Palmyra RSL

A very good night and it was great to see some ‘old’ but new faces that had not attended any previous reunions. The RSL was the ideal venue, as being a Thursday night we had the hall exclusively to ourselves. Apart from getting the weekend started on a good note, it was an opportunity to distribute the Reunion Port and merchandise, have some smally eats and few pale ales.

Friday 11 Apr 2008 Dinner Dance

Attendance 118

Special Guest Mr & Mrs Bill Mudd (LEEUWIN official Photographer 1961-1980 Venue Fremantle Sailing Club

The night was started off with pre-dinner drinks with the RANR Band playing in the background led by CPOMUSN Ted Tate – the band (22) was fabulous all night and played on until stumps at 2359. Mick Gallagher and Jeff Wake did the Master of Ceremonies duties and kept the night flowing along nicely. Mick was also our official photographer and his boundless energy never ceases to amaze me. The meal was the top menu provided and from all reports many were seen going around the buoy especially for the seafood and of course the ‘duffs’. The dance floor was given a hammering but not as energetic (funny that) as our 1963 JRTE balls in the old drill hall.

Saturday 12 Apr 2008 Visit ex HMAS LEEUWIN – now Leeuwin Barracks

Free day

Many took the opportunity to walk around LEEUWIN and check out the playing fields, parade ground (sealed now) drill hall and the many changes that have taken place over the years (especially the accommodation & galley/cafe). A few like Phil Franklin had never been back since 1963 and must have been quite a spinout.

Sunday 13 Apr 2008 BBQ

Attendance 95

Venue Bicton-Palmyra RSL

The order of the day was BBQ and FREE DRINKS from 1100 (LAST FREEBIE WAS DRANK AT 1730); it was a good way to wind up the weekend reunion as many had to eat, drink and run to fly back east. The BBQ was catered and Chefed by Twister Harte whose meat selection was ‘as usual’ fantastic. Twister was helped by many for the cooking duties – " Everybody loves to BBQ".

The weather for the whole weekend was more than we originally hoped for as the weekend before was foul.

My thanks to our hard working committee members who after numerous meetings watched it all come together without too many hiccups.

Special thanks to the RSL members who were our Cook, Waitress’ & Dish Washer brigade, Barry Brownrigg (ex- POPTI) Alan Meyer (ex WOQMG) and Mick Marwick (ex POSV) who were just terrific Thursday night and Sunday.
