G’day All. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. We took grandkids to the new ‘Wet and Wild’ theme park in Sydney today 40 degrees plus it was the place to be. This will be the final Weekly News for 2103. What a year, we finally have our troops home from Afghanastan. They all looked happy campers disembarking from the plane. In October, we have had a very successful 50th Reunion held here in Sydney coordinated by Mike Hogan and his team. Sadly we lost a brother, Garry Pyke, in May. We also arranged a plaque to be dedicated for ‘Jessie’ Ian James who passed away in August 2011. We are now looking forward to doing the same with Garry.

Thanks to all who responded indicating they were not receiving the links in the Attachment. It appears I am putting too many links on one page. I will try to overcome this by splitting the Attachment.

I have received an invitation from Navy Events for the 10 Feb ceremonies. Has anybody else received one.

Spoke to Phil Clements and Sandy Powell during the week. They are both doing well. Phil has been furthering his work with DVA as an Advocate.

50th Anniversary of the VOYAGER-MELBOURNE collision.
The cut off date for those attending functions at Jervis Bay has past. All the names forwarded to me have been onforwarded to Navy. Invitations will be forwarded by Navy Events. Any further inquiries re participation should be forwarded to
Navy Events

We will continue our annual functions in Huskisson from 2015.

The AIF Bowls competition next year at Dubbo will be held 9-11 September 2014. We have about 13 starters at this stage. How about a Ladies team? Think about a bowling holiday in the NSW Mid West.

G’day All. Hope you are all enjoying the ‘channels nights’ prior to the upcoming Christmas season. If you intend going to the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE Collision Memorial please read below. Have been in contact with Ken Scarisbrick and Sandy Powell, both have indicated they are not receiving the links in the attachment to Weekly News. Is there anybody else not receiving them.

Davo has been doing some good work on our ‘Passing out Parade’ pics. He has been able to cut and enhance thus allowing enlarging without losing definition, this will allow those with tired old eyes an opportunity to see themselves at LEEUWIN. Davo is happy to send you a copy of these pics, with the names as per the brochure.

Thanks to Buck Rogers and Rick Avey for finding George Pike’s details; it has been forwarded to Glenn Summerhayes.

50th Anniversary of the VOYAGER-MELBOURNE collision.
On Wednesday last was informed by Navy Events they had a meeting with Chief of Navy. He has now indicated to them he wants to prioritise the seating on CHOULES. He wants to ensure NOK of those who did not survive the incident receive first priority, then survivors, then MELBOURNE and SAR people. Navy Events think one person only will be selected to represent each family of those who did not survive the night of 10 Feb 1964. He also indicated he will increase the numbers to CRESWELL for the Monday night ‘Beat the Retreat’ function. We will be kept informed of developments.

The cut off date for those attending functions at Jervis Bay has past. All the names forwarded to me have been onforwarded to Navy. Everybody should receive an invitation to the events from Navy. Any further inquiries re participation should be forwarded to

We will continue our annual functions in Huskisson from 2015.

There is plenty to look at in the Attachment this week. There is an article about all who commuted their DFRDB Pension, Ship Side grey is a thing of the past, (next thing it will be no Sunday night roast - where is the RAN going), articles on DVA, safety apps when travelling and more. Its worth a look.

G’day All, Still good days for couch potatoes tremendous game by the Wallabies against Wales and the Kangaroos win the Rugby League World Cup. Up early this morning to watch the Rugby.

Received advice on Tank’s condition. Good news. He is on the mend.

50th Anniversary of the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE collision.
We have been allocated 40 positions onboard CHOULES. There is a church function on Sunday morning in CRESWELL, and following the sea phase there is a ceremony including ‘Beat the retreat’ also at CRESWELL. The thought process by Navy was that those who took part in the Sea Phase would also attend the CRESWELL Monday Evening ceremony. Chief of Navy will be co-ordinating all events, as such Navy need all contact details i.e email, snail mail and telephone numbers to ensure he can forward the RSVP’s.

The way I see this, is, we will now all be able to attend and also take our spouses. Please let me know if you or your spouse wish to attend. I will take it for granted those who have previously volunteered will be starters. A list is below.

The AIF Bowls competition next year at Dubbo will be held 9-11 September 2014. We have about 13 starters at this stage. How about a Ladies team? Think about a bowling holiday in the NSW Mid West.

G’day All, Great day for Australian cricket, one up, what a change, gotta love this retired life, being a couch potato watching the box.

Have received some important information on the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE ceremony on 10 Feb 14. It is below. Please read.

Brent Balchin forwarded a pic of Skull Boden and himself in DIAMINTINA in 1963. If you would like a copy of this please let me know. If you know of Skull’s relations address please onforward.

Received an email from Tank Evans – he is going into hospital for some surgery:

Hi Gents,

I will be going into hospital on Monday 25th November for the replacement of my left hip. It was to be done sometime next year but I found this morning they are bringing it forward. So a short spell in the rest home for practicing butchers AKA Redcliffe hospital, and then more R&R at home to do what I do now, which is not much I can assure you. Will let you know how I am going in a couple weeks.

cheers Tank Evans

All the best for the op and hope you have a speedy recovery.

50th Anniversary of the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE collision. First off please disregard any correspondence I have previously forwarded on this topic re numbers and who can participate. This is part of the email directed to ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ which I received from ‘Navy Events’ yesterday after speaking to the President of “Survivors of VOYAGER’.

“If there are 160 of the Voyager Assoc and 40 from the Leeuwin group, this is the line that will need to be drawn.

The 48 Navy invites bring to the total to 248, which is our capacity.

The Chief of Navy is keen to host not just a ceremony, but a full reception at Geelong House at HMAS Creswell, incorporating a ceremonial sunset and beat to quarters, with a bell rung 82 times at the time of the collision to mark the end of the days activities.
Can you please let me know if the Association specifically would not like this to happen and return to Memorial Park in Huskisson? Note that if this is to occur, Navy will not be in a position to provide refreshments or catering at the Park.
In addition,
The Chief of Navy has requested that he issue the invitations to guests and would like the Navy to be host for this particularly important anniversary. In light of the ongoing work that your Association does every year, we don't want to step on any toes. However, on this occasion, does your Association have an objection to our office managing the invitation list, issuing invites from the Royal Australian Navy and managing the RSVPs also?

We have learned of some physical limitations that will be placed on guests embarking on a Navy ship too.

All guests that will travel to sea will need to be physical able enough to climb three flights of stairs and complete a medical screening/declaration form prior to embarking and if required, cleared by a Navy medical officer.

We will provide this form closer to the date.

There is also a minimum age of 12 years for any guest due to the life saving equipment onboard”.

It would appear from the above email Chief of Navy has recognised us as major stake holders in this ceremony. As such he has allocated us 40 positions onboard CHOULES. The way I see this we will now all be able to attend and also take our spouses. Please let me know if you or your spouse wish to attend. I will take it for granted those who have previously volunteered will be starters. A list is enclosed in the Enclosure.

You will also note that on completion of the sea Chief of Navy is holding a major function in CRESWELL. Tom Houldsworth who is our coordinator of this event has indicated we will participate in the CRESWELL ceremony. This will give our members an opportunity to be part of the ceremony and witness Navy at its ceremonial best. The AIF Bowls competition next year at Dubbo will be held 9-11 September 2014. We have about 13 starters at this stage. How about a Ladies team? Think about a bowling holiday in the NSW Mid West.

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Have arrived back in wet and windy Sydney after 4 weeks on the road.

Further to advice received last week from the President of ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’, I have been advised we have been allocated 7 positions onboard CHOULES, ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ get 13. As expected, this will be Navy’s main ceremony as the Governor General, Chief of Navy, Minister for Defence and Maritime Commander will be onboard for the service.

We will still be having our regular function in Husky RSL and VOYAGER Park ceremony in VOYAGER Park on 10 February. There are church services in CRESWELL and other functions being run by ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ from Friday to Monday. So book your accommodation now.

Birthdays – Happy birthday to Tom Houldsworth, Barry Andrew and Peewee Petherick, Kev Bock, Phil Clements and Charlie Burrows. Make an effort, give them a call, send an email. G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody has had a good week.
Am in Adelaide where we had our initial meeting to organise our next reunion.

I have received advice from the President of ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ that he has been given a direction by Navy that our group is to be included as starters as passengers on CHOULES. Navy has a policy which dictates we have to be fit enough to embark on the ship, remembering there are ladders. He further indicated he needs our names ASAP so he can juggle the numbers with the VOYAGER people. Names are to be with me within one week of receipt of this Weekly News.

Adelaide Reunion Nifty and Di Thomas, Terry and Helen Dack, Nick Bryant, Fred Howes, Dave Scarce, Ian Schubert (travelled from Canberra) and myself were in attendance. Apologies were received from Ally Coglan, Ron Pope, Bob Stupple. Dave Ferguson and Trevor Bartlett. Our sincere condolences go to Ron Pope on the loss of his mother. Our congratulations go to Dave Ferguson on his daughters wedding.

The motion was carried to have the next reunion in Adelaide (City) in October 2015. Further details will be forwarded when known.

50th Anniversary MELBOURNE/VOYAGER Collision 10 Feb 2014. We will still be having our regular function in Husky RSL and VOYAGER Park ceremony in VOYAGER Park on 10 February. There are church services in CRESWELL and other functions being run by ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ from Friday to Monday. So book your accommodation now.

HMAS CHOULES is the vessel selected by Navy to travel to the 19 mile mark Navy will take 100 fit people.

Birthdays – Happy birthday to Terry Coulthard, Pete McMillan, John Wright, Vic Soszynski, Max Nugent, Steve Coll, Peter Pagett, John Stephens and Dave Hanlon. This is probably the largest number of people in one week we have. Make an effort, give them a call, send an email. If you don’t know their details, ask me, maybe I have them. G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody has had a good week.
Am in Streaky Bay fishing with two mates. Rod Hazell called in at Coffin Bay on his way home to WA from the HOBART reunion in Port Lincoln.

Have been watching ABC news and noticed there is an article about an ex sailor who is jail in Russia because of his Greenpeace experiences. His name is Colin Russell. I recall a Colin Russell who joined with me in Jan 63, he went to the same school (Atherton) as I did, in fact we were in the same class and also played League together. His nickname was Charlie as that is his second name. Wondering if anybody knows of another Colin Russell

This is an amazing local seaside pub dating back to 1935. It has a nice ocean view. Parking in the area is usually OK but try to get there early as the beach-goers gather like so much flotsam on a hot day. It is fairly central for everyone. It has a good selection of beers, cider and wines and a great menu at good prices especially for seniors. They can arrange a table for us to all be together if we book ahead. It might be a bit too busy during meal service to do serious planning but will probably go quiet later or we can adjourn after lunch to the nearby Marion RSL to do our planning and check out the venue and meet the team.

LEEUWIN Lads at IFR.

By LCDR Mick Gallagher.

During the International Fleet Review festivities I joined in with my former shipmates to also celebrate our 50th anniversary reunion.

We were the LEEUWIN Lads, who had joined the RAN in January and July 1963 as the 6th and 7th intakes of the former Junior Recruit Training Establishment (JRTE) HMAS Leeuwin at East Fremantle WA i.

“It was a fitting occasion as while the RAN is celebrating her 100th anniversary of the first RAN fleet in 1913, we are joining in the Fleet Review festivities and celebrating 50 of those years,” said former WO WTR Ron Giveen, LEEUWIN 63 Co-ordinator.

It was also a fitting occasion that the survey ship HMAS Leeuwin was the reviewing ship carrying HRH Prince Harry and our Governor General Quentin Bryce. The ship still upholds the LEEUWIN Lads original ship's motto from JRTE 'I shall Maintain'.

As well as joining in the IFR celebrations the ex JRs also enjoyed a reunion harbour cruise and a visit to the GI Chapel where a dedication gathering was held for 59 former shipmates.

Some 80 of us attended the reunion representing the 380 JRs who entered the gates of Leeuwin in1963, aged 15 ½ -16 ½.

Today some of those ex JRs of 1963 are still serving with me celebrating 50 years service with our Navy, including CAPT Brian Gorringe and CPO WTR James Carroll.
Former Chief of Navy (2008-2011) VADM Russ Crane was also a JR at HMAS Leeuwin in 1970.

For further information on LEEUWIN 63, visit www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com or contact Ron Giveen on mobile 0410 529 797. You can also check them out on facebook, https://www.facebook.com/LEEUWIN1963

The AIF Bowls competition next year at Dubbo will be held 9-11 September 2014. We have about 13 starters at this stage. How about a Ladies team? Think about a bowling holiday in the NSW Mid West.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 20 October 2013

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody has had a good week.
Am in Arno Bay fishing with two mates. Hope to meet up with Rod Hazell on Sunday night. He is on way to HOBART reunion being held in Port Lincoln.

Adelaide Reunion There will be a luncheon meeting in Adelaide for all interested parties on Friday 8 November 2013. The agenda for this meeting is to establish a committee to put together our next reunion in Adelaide. Location and time will be notified when known.

10 Feb 2014 50th Anniversary MELBOURNE - VOYAGER Collision. You would be aware I had been negotiating with Dolphin Cruises re the 10 Feb cruise to the 19 mile mark. They have pulled out of the arrangement due to ‘duty of care’. They are concerned about people getting very seasick due to the sea state and not being able to look after them. i.e. return to Huskisson promptly. They expect blustery Nor Easterly winds and a Northerly sea. These conditions are common at that time of the year. So the deal they offered us is now off!!!

We will still be having our regular function in Husky RSL and VOYAGER Park on the 10th February followed by the 50th Commemoration ceremony in VOYAGER Park. There are church services in CRESWELL and other functions being run by ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’ from Friday to Monday. So book your accommodation now. There is another major function being held in JB over that weekend.

HMAS CHOULES is the vessel selected by Navy to travel to the 19 mile mark. Seats on this are being coordinated by ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’. Tom Houldsworth has contacted the President. He has indicated Navy will take 100 fit people; those who are able to climb ladders. CHOULES is a major warship. He has 115 on his books at present, however, if any vacancies occur he will offer them to us.

Birthdays – Happy birthday to Len Bodimeade who is the only birthday boy we have this week. Give him a call, send an email. If you don’t know his details, ask me, maybe I have them. Don’t die wondering if your old mate (and he is getting old, turning 66 and 67) remembers you.

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody had a good week.
Our 50th reunion was an outstanding success. I will be compiling a Newsletter to summarise the events that occurred over the weekend in the near future.
Hoss is on the up and up. Judy reports:
Hi everyone,
Once again, sorry if you have had this news via text message or Facebook, but I don't want to leave anyone out of the updates, and this is a good one!
Ian is home and recuperating well, although he tires very easily and is constantly cold. The rest of us are in T-shirts while he is huddled over the fire. I think that is a residual effect of the anesthetic. His scars are impressive but healing well. I am rubbing Bio Oil into them in the hope of lessening the permanent scarring effect. All in all, he is making amazing progress, so let's hope it continues.

He is doing all the right things - SO FAR!!! Not sure if that will continue when he starts to feel much better and develops the old "Cabin Craziness" and decides he wants to get back to renovating houses, chopping wood etc. So far, so good. Again, thank you all for the messages of support, the cards, flowers etc. It was all much appreciated. Love Judy

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 6 October 2013
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody had a good week, the International Fleet Review is on us. Met up with Derek (Knocker) White and Ian (Schubes) Schubert during the week. Watched the Tall Ships come in on Thursday from level 7 of KUTTABUL, rain, low cloud and the Tug which did the ‘Welcome by spray’ tried to do a job on the spectacle but did not succeed. Was worth the watch. Spent the morning at North Head as the ships came through the heads. Knocker and Marilyn and granddaughter were there also. The crowd just loved the RAN on display.
Saturday, tomorrow, some of us will be on the Harbour Cruise for the IFR. Should be a great day.
Have left all the important stuff on the reunion below for all to read.
Max Delahunty is searching for 7th Intake Passing Out Parad book
Ron
I know this is late and I should have thought of it a long time ago. Do you have in your possession any copies of passing out parade books or the ability to get hold of one so that it could be copied. I am in particular after a 7th intake copy. I have tried blowing it up off the web site but am unable to get it clear. Hope you can help at this late stage. Max Delahunty

Larraine Utterley forwarded this email:

Hi Ron
Glad to hear that all your planning for the reunion is coming together. It will be an excellent get together and we look forward to seeing the photos in due course. We will be there in spirit.
Kevin is still doing well and progressing slowly. No hospital visits so that’s a good thing.

International Fleet Review If anybody wants to catch up the HMAS SYDNEY group will be at the Aurora Hotel (Rooftop Bar) they have indicated everybody is welcome. The address is 324 Elizabeth St Surry Hills.
Birthdays – Happy birthday to Russ Nelson, Gordon Davison and Jim Claypole. Give them a call, send an email. If you don’t know their details, ask me, maybe I have them. Don’t die wondering if your old mate (and he is getting old, turning 66 and 67) remembers you.
The AIF Bowls competition next year at Dubbo will be held between 9-11 September 2014. Think about a bowling holiday.
Reunion 2013 Dress for all functions is smart casual. There is no need to wear coats and medals to the Chapel as we are only visiting to view the dedication plaques which have been placed there. This is not a dedication service.
Name tags, please bring and wear your favourite name tag. We will have blank name tags with the ‘Under two Ensigns’ logo available at the ‘Rabbits’ table. Over to you. Please come and collect your shirts and lapel badges you ordered. We will also have some LEEUWIN 63 mugs, biros, stubby coolers, wine, car stickers and polo shirts available.
If you are looking for something different to see or do in Sydney especially with a nautical flavour and you have not visited the Navy Heritage Centre at GI. This will be your big opportunity. Ferries leave Circular Quay and drop off and pick up from GI. This is the easiest way to get there. Have a squiz you will be impressed. Also don’t forget the Mons Cup on Thursday 10 at Macquarie Uni, should be a great day.
Rockers at Friday 1830 for meet and greet.
We are leaving on Fusion Cruises from King St Wharf at 1830 on Saturday.
Sunday upstairs at the Rockers 1200 for BBQ. Don’t forget the Chapel visit; be at GI Gates at 1030 on Sunday.
Feb 2014 MELBOURNE VOYAGER COLLISION ANNIVERSARY

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 29 September 2013
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Hope everybody had a good week. There is some real important stuff on the reunion below.
Spoke to Hoss Potter one day out of ICU, he was really positive and full of bens. Judy has forwarded a further report on his condition as of today. It is below.
International Fleet Review We are nearly there for the International Fleet Review and as or more importantly our reunion. In chronological order; the tall ships arrive Thursday and the International Fleet this Friday morning. Saturday is the IFR in the Harbour when some of us are doing the IFR Fleet Review on various Harbour Cruises. Darling Harbour will be absolutely ape on completion of this tour by way of the extension of the harbour cruise and the number of tourists. If anybody wants to catch up from our lot, please let me know, we will be at the Aurora Hotel (Rooftop Bar) with the HMAS SYDNEY group. The address is 324 Elizabeth St Surry Hills. My number is 0410 52 9797.
From Judy Potter,
Ian has turned the corner - not only out of ICU but walking around - no pain - and back to complaining about everything and everyone. That's how we knew he was back to normal. (HaHa) The kids and I are currently in the hotel at the airport and are flying to Sydney this morning. If anything goes wrong, which is unlikely, I willl leave them there and fly back to Ian. At present Ian will be out of the hospital on Tuesday and in to rehab. We are hoping that might be at Traralgon, but will wait and see. If he keeps improving as he has done we should be able to take him home on Friday. Will just wait and see. It is just amazing how things changed over a couple of days. I just hope he does all the right things once he gets home. He is not noted for looking after himself healthwise. I will just have to keep nagging!! I am so grateful for all the emails of support, text messages, cards and flowers. Ian was overwhelmed by the people who sent good wishes.
Thanks everyone.
Love
Judy
Poolie forwarded the following email:
Thanks Ron. I should be back up and running within 8-10 weeks if all goes well. Have just progressed to a moonboot for the next 8-10 weeks. Operation was a big one. 3hrs it took. Had my ankle fused. Surgeon said it was from sliding down those ladders onboard ships and hit the decks running. You should remember that. Also caused some pain in the good old knees as well. Also caused from footy injuries as well. If only we knew then what we do now. Would have walked down the bloody ladders instead. Anyhow, have fair winds across your face mate. cheers Poolie.
Glenn and Jennie Summerhayes forwarded this:
Hi Ron & fellow JR's, Unfortunately it's crunch time regarding our 50th HMAS Leeuwin Reunion - My Specialist have scheduled a range of Tests etc. for October and November, so I can not travel to Sydney until at least 2014. I am sure you will all have a great time - I can only wish you all the best and thank you for those who keeps "our Ship" afloat with the Newsletters etc. Regards & Best Wishes Glenn & Jennie' SUMMERHAYES R94128

Now is the time to finalise your payments. We have to give final numbers to the Harbour Cruise people who are taking us all out on the Saturday night, remember we are leaving on Fusion Cruises from King St Wharf at 1830. Also Rockers needs to know how many they are catering for, i.e Friday 1830 for meet and greet then Sunday upstairs at 1200 for BBQ. Libbie the Events co-ordinator for the Rockers tells me Crownies will be on special. Don’t forget the Chapel visit; be at GI Gates at 1030. G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Had a really good week, spoke to Hector Hart, Mike Hogan, Gordon Stringer and Rod Hazell. Give Hector a call he would appreciate your time. Rod is trying to catch up with Gerry Bandy, he fell a little short but he has a plan. Rod is on the way to the AFL Veterans Games in Darwin. Yeah he is 66 and he still plays. Say no more.
Hoss Potter is in hospital, Judy writes: Hi Ron,
It's Judy. Yes, he had a couple of angina attacks last week. Is now in Epworth Eastern (Box Hill) and having bypass surgery on Monday.

He often talks about all his old Navy mates, and will be pleased to know you are thinking of him. The RAN grapevine never ceases to amaze me!
Ian does have his mobile phone with him - 0407972797
Regards

Judy
Give Hoss a ring and give him your support.
You all remember Eric Haggart, he was at our 2003 reunion at the Gold Coast and full of life, but unfortunately passed away on 9 Aug 05, again it is my sad duty to report his wife Carol has recently passed away.
Have been in contact with Poolie, he is in a wheel chair and will not be able to make the reunion. All the best mate, hope you make a quick recovery.
Same can be said of John Hume, he is having a hip operation in October, will be in Sydney for the IFR but has to return home for the operation. All the best mate.
The LEEUWIN 63 Bowling team has provided pics of their successful sojoun to Dubbo. They are in the Attachment and will be on our Facebook page. Get ready to go to Dubbo next September, what a buzz.
Who would have thought when we were at LEEUWIN that final football in Rugby League could be played between Newcastle and Melbourne and in AFL Fremantle and Sydney, well tonight both those finals are a reality. I remember one of the PT’s Noddy Mellish playing for one of the Fremantle teams in 63. Fantastic.
Doug Wilson responded to the article on ‘Gamlen’
Hi Ron I thought I would tell you something that happened when I was working as a PO's Messman at Albatross , the mention of Gamlen triggered the memory. When the Chefs? used to fry eggs they were done in a tray with about 2 dozen holes that were filled with oil (no counting calories those days) and the eggs cracked into them, all well and good until the Chef? found out he had got the tin of Gamlen mixed up with the tin of cooking oil, they were very similar in colour, anyway he had to throw the lot out. I don't know why he bothered throwing them out I'm sure no one would have known the difference, if you remember what pussers eggs tasted like. Ok Ron I will see you in October when I am sure I will have other dits to spin from my short but eventful naval career. Cheers Doug Wilson.
Dolly Gray (Spanish submarines) and Dizzie Gillespie (a Stoker) – both these blokes were Stokers have forwarded articles you will be interested in, they plus plenty of other interesting articles are in the Attachment.
Those that are attending the Harbour Cruise for the Fleet Review on 5 October will have received notice that the tour has been extended by an hour and an additional charge has been levied to cover this. Should be a big day.
50th Reunion Brent Balchin has forwarded us some posters for our 50th, there are pics of two of them in the attachment. Thanks Brent, they are brilliant. We will have them on display at the Rockers. Have a look and see how you are travelling and who else is attending. Now is the time to finalise your payments.

The Mons Cup rugby competition will be held amongst all the participants of the IFR group. It will be held at Macquarie University on Thursday 10 October. Put this date in your diary as it will be a great day. Remember when you last played in the Mons Cup, this will be the forty fifth time it has been played.

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. What a weekend in front of us teams leading into footy finals, the elections and just as importantly the LEEUWIN 63 Bowling team travel to Dubbo to compete. Hope to make it there next year to support our team and for a get together.
In the attachment this week there are several articles in respect of the International Fleet Review. Signs are springing up around Sydney advertising the event. It will be great and of course on the end of it, as important is our 50th reunion. What a week or ten days it will be.
Have not received any confirmation either way of the notice in respect of Howie Foot. Schubes informed us last week.
Numbers are growing on those wishing to visit the GI Chapel on Sunday 13th. If you haven’t decided, believe me you will be surprised and enjoy the experience.
50th Reunion Have a look and see how you are travelling and who else is attending. As previously mentioned sale of the polo shirts has ceased. Now is the time to finalise your payments for the functions and shirts.

Face Book – Have a look at your facebook page, maybe you would like to put the sports group pics there.
IFR – As mention earlier, this event is now being ramped up in Sydney. It will be great. During the International Fleet Review there will be a sports day. The Mons Cup rugby competition will be held amongst all the participants of the IFR group. It will be held at Macquarie University on Thursday 10 October. Put this date in your diary as it will be a great day. Remember when you last played in the Mons Cup, this will be the forty fifth time it has been played.
Hometowns - There are no names just addresses, however, you can see where all our members live. http:www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page19.htm

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 1 September 2013

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. In the last week Marty and Lyn Edwards have confirmed their attendance. Don't hesitate to contact us if you haven't made your mind up yet.

Talked to Norm Friebe, John Tant, Mike Hogan, Tom Houldsworth and Phil Clements during the week. John Tant has caught up with Reg Turnbull over the Vietnam Veterans weekend in Muswellbrook in August. Reg lives out Bourke way.

In the attachment this week there are several articles on the stance the political parties have on our superannuation. Cant wait for the 2nd September to have some peace. Then the big news will be the INTERNATIONAL FLEET REVIEW. Now that is news.

Schubes sent the following email: Hi Ron,

I have just been browsing Facebook on the Frisco Hotel Page and notice there is a note refereeing to Howie Foote who was a member of the 7th intake. It appears he has gone to heaven.

If it is the one and the same guy I served at Harman and on Stalwart with him. I remember him as a very good Chef.

See the bit from Facebook.

“THE LATE GREAT HOWIE FOOTE, my CPOCK my role model”

Maybe some of our members can enlighten us of his passing?

Cheers,

Schubes

Numbers are growing on those wishing to visit the GI Chapel on Sunday 13th. If you haven’t decided, believe me you will be surprised and enjoy the experience.

50th Reunion As previously mentioned sale of the polo shirts has ceased. I have placed the order to ensure we have them in early October. Have a look and see how you are travelling and who else is attending. Now is the time to finalise your payments for the functions and shirts.

Feb 2014 MELBOURNE VOYAGER COLLISION ANNIVERSARY

Have been informed by Navy that HMAS CHOULES will the vessel which will carry those interested to the 19 mile mark. This is being co-ordinated by ‘Survivors of VOYAGER’. Tom Houldsworth is going to contact the President of the association to determine what is happening.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 25 AUGUST 2013

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. In the last week 3 more of our group, Annie Oakley, Nev and Di Thomas have indicated they are going to attend the reunion in October. Also been in contact with Mick Guilfoyle (Tinfoil), he may turn up. We need to know definite numbers two weeks prior to the event. If you haven’t decided yet, have a look at our programme and see whether it suits you. We will have a lot of fun.

Mike Hogan and me were at the Vietnam Veterans Ceremony at Martin Place last Sunday. Mike went on further to rub shoulders with the Premier at Government House. Little Patty did not turn up so he was a little disappointed. Hope to get more there next year.

Received an email from Brian Gorringe. Brian is well and is still doing full time service. He has been given an extension until January 2017. Brian cannot make our function in October as he is on course in Canberra. He will be leaving Aust for his OS posting later in the year.

In the attachment this week, we find the AWD destroyers are being designated DDGH’s and their names revealed/confirmed. The Repatriation Medical Authority are conducting investigations into PTSD, Alcohol, Drugs and measles and mumps infections affecting Diabetes. (This might help YOU) If you were a Pussers Chef you may be able to help a Pongo do some research on feeding soldiers, Brigadier Weekes response to Minister Kelly on the DFRDB issue are some of the articles in an interesting week.

I am surprised there are not more people interested in the Chapel visit on Sunday morning. It is only a visit, there will not be a service. Besides having the dedication plaques of all our mates, this place looks fantastic and oozes history. It is one of two chapels in the world which has its main deck not on the ground floor. The other one is in the West Indies. Let me know if you want to attend.

G’day LEEUWIN 63 members and interested parties. Russ Dale forwarded me an email this week that contained great news about our not so good lawyer mate David Forster. In part ‘A Victorian solicitor banned from practising law is being sued for more than $7 million by receivers brought in to recoup money he is accused of pocketing from victims of on
