Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 27 December 2020

G’day All.  Happy New Year to you and yours.  Let’s get out there and do it and make this a great year.

The seven past recipients of the LEEUWIN 63 JR of the year have been at work again.  This year there were 8 blokes nominated and as you may know the award cannot be won twice.  Some new names, some who have contributed continually over the life of our group.  A diverse group who still help to keep us together.  This year’s winner is a bloke who rang me in 2002 and asked if we would like to combine the two intakes who joined LEEUWIN in 1963 into a group.  He then was instrumental in organizing the next two major functions at the Gold Coast 2003 and 2005 where he had positive assistance from his wife Robyn and family.  In 2003 we opened a bank account, from then until now he is the co-treasurer of our group.  In 2020 he came forward and put his name up to be part of the committee for the Ulverstone Wake in March 2021.  Of course I am talking about Mal Chatfield.  On behalf of the previous winners we congratulate you on the award and thank you for your contribution.  The presentation date will be promulgated.

Shep’s work on the JR Survey is included (partially) this week (responses to questions 3 and 4).  Really good reading.  If you haven’t contributed to the survey as yet and want to, please let me know.  Shep is happy to accommodate the late responses.

Has anybody been in contact with Col Mundt or Everhardus Overmars.  Have received ‘return to sender’ on the snail mail Newsletters that were forwarded out. If you have either mobile phone numbers or email addresses could you please forward to me, or contact them yourself and ask them to get in contact with me.

Were you into ‘Athletics’ at LEEUWIN.  Quigs was, he has forwarded a copy of the 63 Athletics programme.  Have a gig.  Brings back some memories.  I recall Pete McVee who wasn’t a runner competing in a distance event.  He did well, performing on pure effort.  Gutsiest effort I ever witnessed.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard, John Hatchman, Schubes, Moot Sutton and Spook are starters.

Of course, with another cluster infection occurring, it makes one think of where are we going and in our group’s view, is it safe to go to Ulverstone in March.  The positive consequence of this cluster in my view relates to the NSW Government strengthening its resolve to constrain the International aircrews to 2 Sydney motels which includes NSW Police Security to keep tabs on them.  This should close the loop on Airline crews being able to travel independently.  Ergo Ulverstone is still very doable.

    ULVERSTONE 19-21 MARCH 2021

Please send me your shirt size and whether you want long or short sleeve ASAP, I have to order soon.

Friday 19 Meet and Greet – Buttons Brewing

Saturday 20 Dinner – Bass and Flinders Motel

Sunday 21 BBQ Lunch SHROPSHIRE Park

We will be providing all EXJR’s who attend a chambray shirt.  Please send me your preference of short or long sleeve (they will have a pocket and the LEEUWIN logo with 1963) and size.  We will need a few months turnover time for the Chambray shirts, so if you are attending and want a shirt please forward your size.  If you don’t want a shirt, could you also please let me know.

The working committee for the wake in Ulverstone is Mal Chatfield, Bongo Di Betta, Terry Dack, Stoney Bourke (assisting) and Ron Giveen.

The cost for the 3 functions is $75 a head.  Please pay by 31 January 2021.  Details of our account are:

    LEEUWIN 1963

    BSB       032 003

    Account Number  307469

This is a low cost series of functions.  If COVID 19 prevents our attendance the money will be refunded.  This is also the case for accommodation as the Motel people are aware of travel conditions.  I suppose what I am saying is if you have withdrawn from attending because of the COVID travel uncertainty and haven’t planned any other activity please tentatively rethink Ulverstone.   I am confident we will enjoy ourselves and want you to be there to share it with us.  Had a yarn with Fred Auty on Chritmas Day, he indicated he wants to be a starter for Ulverstone.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 60th anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers, Tank and Poolie), John Miscamble, Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered, Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be, Dave Staines has offered to head up the organizing committee if we pick Yass and Tom Houldsworth and Roger Collins have suggested The Gold Coast.  Mal Chatfield has suggested the Sunshine Coast, however he is also happy for Bribie Island.  Do you have a point of view?

Have spoken to John Hatchman, James Carroll, Knocker Whyte, Sandy Powell and Fred Auty in the past seven days.  Cricket is back on watched the Test and both Big Bash games yesterday. Tragic.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   Bob Stupple is the most recent to ask.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Have built the Navy Rugby Web site.  The address:  https://www.ranrugby.com/   Those that played in LEEUWIN in 63 or elsewhere in the 60’s and 70’s or beyond may be interested.

Kaye Slotboom is interested in collecting data for anybody who is suffering from Asbestosis.  You may contact her on kaye.slotboom@icloud.com

If you want a polo shirt, size XXL there is one available.  Caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design have arrived.  All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging.  Shirts are $30, caps are $15.

Face Book – Our FB Page has been updated.  The most recent pics are of John Hatchman hitting the Golf Trail and two pics of the get her at the Hero of Waterloo on Friday 13 November.  Want to include your pics on this site please send them to me rugbyron@bigpond.com or Nev Thomas on unicom05@bigpond.net.au the site address is https://www.facebook.com/LEEUWIN1963  The easiest way for the non Facebook people to look at our pics and posts (if you do not have or do not want a FB account) is to go to our website and click on the link at the top of our page.

If anyone is travelling through Molong NSW, remember Jim Clegg and Liz have the only motel in that town. bookingsmolongmotorinn@gmail.com   Good way to catch up.

Give your mates a ring, send an SMS or an email, (and tell me about it) I am sure they would appreciate it.

Bev and I have purchased a ‘fishing shack’ at Manning Point.  It is an old onsite van in the Weeroona Caravan Park (pet friendly).  The Manning River one side, the Pacific Ocean the other.  150 metres to launch the boat and 500 metres to the Bowling Club.  Bev probably won’t spend a lot of time there as she is looking after her horse.  I intend commuting from Dee Why as often as possible.  If you are going past Taree, give me a call, the chances of me being at Manning Point will be good.

    Cheers

    Ron

Am back in Dee Why for Christmas.  Thanks to everyone who has been in contact with us due to the COVID pandemic centre for Australia shifting to the Northern Beaches.  Bev and I are coping well, I know I was a Writer, sorry Warrior Writer, this isolation is just like seatime or chooks, with time to exercise ashore, beauty.

G’day All.  The Brereton Report has dominated the Attachment this week.  There are 8 related articles.  All are interesting reading.  There are also a few articles on Australia relations with China with a defence theme.  If you are interested there is a lot of reading there.

Mike Shephard is putting in a huge effort into a complex assignment.  His commitment is phenonimal.  He has forwarded a timeline on ‘The LEEUWIN 63 Survey’.

Status of the development of the Draft Leeuwin Survey Report – 4/12/2020  by Mike Shephard

      Proposed Timetable (Milestones only):
22/1/2021 – draft report to Ron
5/2/2021 – final draft (v1.0 ) to all respondents for comment
26/2/2021 – closing date for comments
      12/3/2021 – final report issued

Absolute worse case scenario – final draft issued before Ulverstone reunion.

      Proposed structure of report:

Likely to change, but something like:
    • ·     Contents Page
    • ·     Executive Summary
    • ·     Purpose of Survey
    • ·     Background to Survey
    • ·     Limitations and Constraints in Conducting Survey
    • ·     Data Analysis, Observations and Conclusions
    • ·     Appendix 1: Quantitative Results
    • ·     Appendix 2: Narrative Responses to Each Question
    • ·     Appendix 3: Glossary of Terms

  •
    Status of work
Contents and Executive Summary – will be done near the end

Purpose, Background, Limitations, Constraints – have written a couple of pages of notes but needs much more work before sending to Ron for comment. Lower priority than work on Appendix 2.

Appendix 1: Ron has already done a good job of collating quantitative data, including creation of pie charts.

Appendix 2: Ron had already consolidated a dozen or so responses into a word document. I have added in all the remaining survey responses and have done minor editing to some of the text (spelling, grammar, format). I think it’s important to retain each respondent’s own voice, but it is also important that readers understand the point being made. You’ll just have to trust us!

My next activity is to create an Appendix 2 document with all the survey questions in it, and then cut and paste relevant comments from the working document mentioned above to sit under each question heading.

Of course, I’m omitting comments such as yes, no, maybe, nup, yep, dunno, sometimes, can’t remember – these have already been counted in Ron’s quantitative data.

I am also omitting some long, rambling war stories. There aren’t many, and they are best left to reunions.

Where someone’s name is mentioned, e.g. ‘I’d like to do Leeuwin again knowing what I know now, and get even with Stan Dyson and Stroppy Roesler’, I’ll change to ‘I’d like to do Leeuwin again knowing what I know now and get even with [name] and [name].

Whilst the survey responses are meant to be in confidence (only Ron knows who sent them – not even me), there are clues to the identity of several respondents embedded in their replies. For example, ‘I joined the Navy to get out of milking cows in Mathoura’, or ‘I wanted to be a Cook, but was initially allocated Bottle-washer, and got my rate changed to Scullery Maid whilst on Vampire ‘.  Not sure what to do about that, if anything. Maybe it doesn’t matter, as responses from Person A would be spread under different questions and not associated with each other.

All-in-all, this is a very enjoyable exercise. Like being back at work. Some of the replies are absolutely GOLD. Thanks to Ron and the late Ken Railton for kicking it off.

OUR FUNCTION IN ULVERSTONE IN MARCH 2021 IS NOW BEING HELD ON THE WEEKEND 19-21 MARCH 2021
Please note the date change and make sure you alter your accommodation, travel, car hire etc to reflect the new dates.

    From Roger Collins

Re 2023 and Tom Houldsworth’s suggestion of the Gold Coast.  I for one second that, and I venture to say a most worthwhile consideration for a venue, in my opinion (I am biased – on the committee)  is the Currumbin RSL .  The club is in the throes of a major renovation which is nearing completion,  a great function room and additionally, plenty of accommodation nearby and of course we are in the neighbourhood of the GC airport.

    Have a great Christmas,

    All the best

Thanks to those who have responded to the mini survey and also to those who have forwarded their sizes for the Chambray shirt for the Ulverstone bash.  It would really help if those that haven’t filled in the survey could do it.  If you haven’t responded, could you please reply indicating ‘how long you spent in the RAN’ and your chambray shirt size if you are attending Ulverstone.

We will need a few months turnover time for the Chambray shirts, so if you are attending and want a shirt please forward your size.  If you don’t want a shirt, could you also please let me know.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 29 November 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  Tony Zajer has left us.  Tony suffered a long illness.  The funeral service was held on Friday in Bunbury, Garry McGrath attended and acted as our representative.  Thanks Garry.

The Cricket is back.  Beauty.

Russ Dale had a good response from you re his information on a pacemaker.  Jim Bush wants to know whether you know where he can get hold of a gold SE right arm badge.  Good articles.  There are also three different articles on the SASR in the Attachment, well worth the read.

I have been remiss in recent years for those who do not have am email account.  Twister Harte told Quigs he hadn’t heard from me when they were discussing Tony’s passing.  Quig’s passed on the message.  Was a good wake up call to me.  I will get out a Newsletter very soon.  Earlier this year and late last year I had serious problems with my address books.  Consequently several of our group have not been receiving our weekly news dits.  If you know of anyone who you used to be in contact with that has gone quiet, this could be the reason.  Let me know their name and I will check it out.

Mike Shephard has offered his services in compiling the results of the survey and a report.   The report is coming together.

We will need a few months turnover time for the Chambray shirts, so if you are attending and want a shirt please forward your size.  If you don’t want a shirt, could you also please let me know.

We will be providing all EXJR’s who attend a chambray shirt.  Please send me your preference of short or long sleeve (they will have a pocket and the LEEUWIN logo with 1963) and size.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard and Schubes have booked accommodation and will be starters.

The working committee for the wake in Ulverstone is Mal Chatfield, Bongo Di Betta, Terry Dack, Stoney Bourke (assisting) and Ron Giveen.  We had a scope meeting during the week which was put together by Bongo.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 60th anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers, Tank and Poolie), John Miscamble, Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered, Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be, Dave Staines has offered to head up the organizing committee if we pick Yass and Tom Houldsworth has suggested The Gold Coast.  Mal Chatfield has suggested the Sunshine Coast, however he is also happy for Bribie Island.  Do you have a point of view?

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Bev and I went to Government House on Thursday 26 November where I was honoured to receive the Order of Australia Medal from Her Excellency Margaret Beazley, Governor of NSW.  There were 12 other recipients from different walks of life, two of them were NSW Fire People.  A pleasant morning on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour.

Bev and I have purchased a ‘fishing shack’ at Manning Point.  It is an onsite van in the Weeroona Caravan Park.  The Manning River one side, the Pacific Ocean the other.  100 metres to launch the boat and 500 metres to the Bowling Club.  Bev probably won’t spend a lot of time there as she is looking after her horse.  I intend commuting from Dee Why as often as possible.  If you are going past Taree, give me a call, the chances of me being at Manning Point will be good.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 15 November 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  One of our group, Russ Dale, who is more than a regular participant to our group (a lot of the jokes you receive are compliments of Russ) is seeking help, he needs advice on a pacemaker maybe you have had some experience good or bad and can share that experience with him.  His contact details are included in his email.

We had a really great afternoon last Friday at The Hero of Waterloo for our lunch.  Tom Houldsworth, Spook, Bongo Di Betta, Mick Gallagher, Mike Hogan, Tassy Mason and Ron Giveen were there.  We all signed the book.  There are a few pics on the Facebook page of those who attended and Mike Hogan standing outside the building (diagonally opposite) he lived during his early years.

I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony with the Commando Association at Hyde Park on Wednesday then marched to their Dedication Plaque in Martin Place.  They appeared very happy to see our interest in their group and were looking forward to next year’s service at the Australian Maritime Museum.  Wayne (the President) and other members of the group were enthusiastic towards the concept of us laying a wreath on VAMPIRE.  I will continue trying to get some response from the AMM.

Thanks to those who have responded to the mini survey and also to those who have forwarded their sizes for the Chambray shirt for the Ulverstone bash.  It would really help if those that haven’t filled in the survey could do it.  Mike Shephard has offered his services in putting the results of the survey and a report.  We are meeting this coming Tuesday to start on it together.   We will need a few months turnover time for the Chambray shirts, so if you are attending and want a shirt please forward your size.  If you don’t want a shirt, could you also please let me know.

As mentioned earlier I have been working on our survey.  Mike Shephard is helping me put together the report.  I have been doing a little further research into the conversations I had with Ken Railton and have realized I didn’t include a few questions that would be relevant to this survey.  Whether you have responded to the survey or not in the past, you are invited to participate.  They are:

1     How long did you serve in the RAN; and

2     Did you terminate your service with the RAN as a consequence of an adverse experience which occurred during your time in LEEUWIN.

Could you please copy and paste and return your experience to me.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard and Schubes have booked accommodation and will be starters.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 25 October 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  Big weekend in sport with the football and horse racing being the stellar events.

We will NOT be meeting at the Sydney Australian Maritime Museum this year on 11 November.  The response from the Commando Association indicates they intend to return to the AMM next year.  This is good news for us.

So, no function on the 11th, who would like to meet in Sydney at either the Rockers or The Hero of Waterloo for lunch on Friday 13.  If you wish to attend please let me know your preferred venue.  Tom Houldsworth is a starter, he and I would prefer the Hero, just for a change.

Hope the message got across about the accommodation in Ulverstone.  The Bass Flinders Motor Inn did not require a deposit.

Survey   Thanks to those that have taken an interest.  Over the years I have spoken to members of our group who didn’t enjoy LEEUWIN and had some serious misgivings about their time there.  Looking at the raw data these views do not appear to be represented.  To be fair to all I would like to offer all those that didn’t fill out the questionnaire a further opportunity to participate.  This offer also applies to all those who receive this Weekly News who weren’t in the 6th and 7th intakes but served in LEEUWIN.  I am currently trawling through the data.  It will be published when I can come up with a decent format.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard and Schubes have booked accommodation and will be a starter.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 18 October 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  We will NOT be meeting at the Sydney Australian Maritime Museum this year on 11 November, The

Australian Maritime Museum have informed me there will be no ceremony this year due to COVID 19.  They also indicated the Commando’s now have their own plaque in Martin Place.  I have asked them to qualify that, not sure whether that means the Commando’s will not be returning to the AMM or not.  If this is the case I was going to explore the possibility of having a Naval Service there.  There is a Destroyer, a Submarine, a Patrol Boat and the KRAIT.  All that is needed is people.

Hope you had a look at the Attachment, some interesting articles there.  Of particular interest to us is accommodation in Ulverstone.

If you would like to spend a little time completing the survey please let me know by email.

Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard has booked his accommodation and will be a starter.

The working committee for the wake in Ulverstone is Mal Chatfield, Bongo DiBetta, Terry Dack, Stoney Bourke (assisting) and Ron Giveen.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 60th anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers and Tank), John Miscamble, Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered, Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be and Dave Staines has offered to head up the organizing committee if we pick Yass.  Do you have a point of view?

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan and/or Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers please let me know.   They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Have built the Navy Rugby Web site.  The address:  https://www.ranrugby.com/   Though completed it has been taken offline as the Management team wish to have a roll out later in the year.  Those that played in LEEUWIN in 63 or elsewhere in the 60’s and 70’s or beyond may be interested.

Kaye Slotboom is interested in collecting data for anybody who is suffering from Asbestosis.  You may contact her on kaye.slotboom@icloud.com

If you want a polo shirt, sizes S, or XXL these sizes are available.  Caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design have arrived.  All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging.  Shirts are $30, caps are $15.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 11 October 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  Our daughter Sharon and her youngest Safira travelled by road from Adelaide to Broken Hill on Wednesday.  It rained all the way.  It was a marvellous experience to see the rain over the desert.  Reminded me of when we were 16 year old’s travelling on the Trans Continental from Port Augusta to Kalgoolie in mid 63.  You will recall we were held up in Kalgoolie as there was too much water on the train track.  There are a few stories around about that excursion.

If you need accommodation in Ulverstone, it would be wise to book now.  On the weekend of our function there is a rowing regatta, those folk will also be looking to sleep somewhere.

Thanks very much to all who checked out our website and alerted me of the transfer shortcomings.  Some of the problems (it looks as if the pics did not come across from our previous website) have been resolved, however not all.  Scotty is looking at it and has promised to resolve the issue.

The cutoff date will be Saturday 17 October.  This offer also applies to all those who receive this Weekly News who weren’t in the 6th and 7th intakes but served in LEEUWIN.  If you would like to spend a little time completing the survey please let me know by email.

We will be meeting at the Sydney Australian Maritime Museum this year on 11 November, put this date also in your calendar.   I will contact AMM this week to ensure the event is still a goer.  Mike Shepherd and Jack Davey intend to be there.  Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks.  Put 10 Feb in your diary for Husky.  Mike Shephard has booked his accommodation and will be a starter.

You would have received the email on Tasmania that was forwarded earlier.  If you have any issues please let me know.  Our management group will try and sort it out.

Thanks to all those that responded to ‘who remembers Peter Dahlstrom’.  James Carroll has been in contact with Peter’s mate Jimmy, currently living in Atherton, who is very happy to have received your responses.  Thanks James.

Could you please have a look at our website.  Address above.  I need to know whether it is functioning correctly.  Could you please let me know either way.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 27 September 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  Our daughter Sharon needs to return to Adelaide to finalise some business so am driving down today/tomorrow via Broken Hill then returning to Sydney by plane early Tuesday.

We had a meeting on Saturday morning in respect of organizing our Ulverston bash.  Bongo DiBetta organized the zoom conference and produced an agenda.  Bongo, Mal Chatfield, Terry Dack and myself participated.  There will be another meeting tonight to wrap up Saturday and Stoney Burke will also be included as he was unavailable on Saturday.  You would remember Stoney is from the 8th intake, he lives in Ulverstone and has volunteered to help us.  Results of the meetings will be posted next week.

Meant to comment last week on what a good job the ADF is doing on the border closures.  They are certainly on the front line during this pandemic.

I have spent some time this week extracting the raw data from the survey you completed on LEEUWIN last year. As an aside, I have received an email indicating one of our members missed the boat last year.

Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks.

We (Mal Chatfield) has been in contact with Garry (Stoney) Bourke.  Stoney has been very busy on our behalf.  At our recent function at the Rockers there was a lot of interest in helping out.  Mal wasn’t there, he is the main mover at present and I know Terry Dack is also interested in helping, Bongo is keen to help, he has volunteered to put a zoom meeting together.  There is scepticism on whether this event will occur.  That will be decided as events unfold.  If the pandemic continues, we will decide on a cut off date at our Zoom meeting.  If you want to be involved in the organizing of this function please let me know.

Have received proposals for the location of our 2023 anniversary bash.  Rocky Freier has suggested Bribie Island (seconded by Ross Gowers), John Miscamble, Brisbane, Terry Dack thinks Fremantle/Perth should be considered and Spook Cairns thinks Melbourne should be the place to be.  Do you have a point of view?

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  I am back in Sydney enjoying the Northern Beaches.

Thanks to all you blokes for responding to the call for ‘do you remember Peter Dahlstrom’, through James Carroll am trying to get your emails to his mate.

Do you remember filling in the questionnaire on your time in LEEUWIN.  Ken Railton had volunteered to process the responses and make some sense out of them.  As you know Ken is not now with us.  I have started on the job.  Will let you know the results in due course.

During the week I spoke with James Carroll and Jaffa Robinson.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 13 September 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  Left Kurrimine Beach today heading south, an hour south of Kurrimine I met up with Stan and Margaret Church in Cardwell for a very enjoyable cup of coffee and a chinwag.  They were heading south also.  I am currently overnight in Claremont.

Last Monday I travelled to Atherton for the unofficial opening of the Atherton RSL and meet up with James Carroll (Immediate past President).  When I was waiting on James I was joined by a bloke who was also a visitor.  I was wearing our LEEUWIN shirt and he happened to ask me if I remembered Peter Dahlstrom.   I couldn’t remember him, however, I recalled he joined with the 7th intake and had passed away.  This bloke (Jim) told me he and Peter were the very best of mates, went to school together and caught up regularly.  He asked me to stay seated, when he departed for his caravan park to return with a pic of Peter.  He still carries it with him.  Peter was described as a wag and the life of the party.  He crossed the bar in the mid nineties.  Jim an ex Soldier who served in Vietnam was very excited to know about our group and share his experiences with us.  He recalls one of Peter’s mates was called Errol, but couldn’t remember his surname.  I contacted Errol Delaney, it wasn’t him.  Do you know.  He may have been a Stoker as Peter was.  Peter’s pic is in the Attachment.

During the week I spoke with Annie Oakley (missed a fishing expedition), Jaffa Robinson, Tassy Mason, Spook Cairns, Gordon Stringer and Errol Delaney.

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  Happy Father’s Day, hope you have enjoyed your day with your family.

Thanks to Fergie and Ken Dobbie for providing Charlie Wright’s email address.  Have been in contact with him.

There has been no response in respect of helping out with Ulverstone.  I take it that those that volunteered initially are still on board.

Last week I gave credit to an article on Teddy Sheean to Ross Gower, it should have read Ross Muller.  Sorry blokes.

Have been in contact with Stan Church and Tassy Mason during the past week.  Intend meeting up with Stan and Margaret next Sunday at Cardwell.

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  Has anybody been in contact with Charlie Wright.  He has slipped off the radar.  His email account is not responding nor is his home phone number.

Annie Oakley, James Carroll and myself met last Friday and enjoyed lunch at the Bungalow Hotel in Cairns.  Speaking for myself I had a great time.  All of us spun a few warries.   Enjoyed our lunch and looking forward to next year.

If anyone is interested there is a link to ‘Report of Proceedings’ in the attachment up to 1970.  You might find it interesting to read the official version of your time at sea on whatever ship you served in.  I certainly did.  There is a specific link to the blokes who served in DUCHESS.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 23 August 2020

http://hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.

Jack Davey didn’t receive an invitation to attend the Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration ceremony at Martin Place, Sydney.  He had his own ceremony.  See his words and pic in the Attachment.

If you are in FNQ and would like to catch up, we will be getting together for a lunch at the Bungalow Hotel Aumuller St, Cairns commencing 1200ish this Friday 28 August 2020.  If anybody wants a lift from the Innisfail/Tully area please let me know.

We will be meeting at the Australian Maritime Museum again this year on 11 November, put this date also in your calendar.   Ross Gowers is a potential starter, Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks.

Please forward your intentions on whether you are or are not considering Ulverstone Tasmania 26-28 March 2021.  Similar format to previous years and heaps of touristy things to do.  Should not conflict with your ANZAC Day activities and does not clash with school holidays.  We will have heaps of fun and bring your swimming togs for a romp in the Bass Strait.

We (Mal Chatfield) has been in contact with Garry (Stoney) Bourke.  Stoney has been very busy on our behalf.  At our recent function at the Rockers there was a lot of interest in helping out.  Mal wasn’t there, he is the main mover at present and I know Terry Dack is also interested in helping.  There is scepticism on whether this event will occur.  That will be decided as events unfold.  If the pandemic continues, we will decide on a cut off date at our Zoom meeting.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan stickers’ please let me know.  They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.  I have ordered some more and also trying to reproduce the ‘Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers.

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  I am sure everybody is happy with Teddy Sheean being awarded his well earned Posthumous VC.  To see that he has been honoured at long last is very satisfying.  An Ordinary Seaman becomes Australia’s first ever Naval Victoria Cross winner!  The proponents of his award had to endure many precedents against him being awarded the medal.  They also should be congratulated for their persistence.

I have received advice concerning VP day and Vietnam Veterans Day ceremonies.   In Sydney during these trying times, one needs an invitation to attend the Martin Place ceremony.

If you are in FNQ and would like to catch up, we will be getting together for a lunch at the Bungalow Hotel Aumuller St, Cairns commencing 1200ish on Friday 28 August 2020.  Details will be forwarded later.

We will be meeting at the Australian Maritime Museum again this year on 11 November, put this date also in your calendar.   Ross Gowers is a potential starter, Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks.

The Dubbo Diggers Bowls Carnival is also off.  It was cancelled this week.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 9 August 2020

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Hope you are all well.  There is an interesting item in this week’s attachment on how the Corona virus affected a very fit 50 year old Dr.  Worth the read.

Have been spending time with Wally and Robyn Gawne fishing and playing bowls during the week. If you are around this area please call in, I plan to be here until 2nd week in September.  There are several former Matelots living in the area.

If you are in FNQ and would like to catch up, we will be getting together for a lunch in Cairns on Friday 28 August 2020.  Details will be forwarded later.

Did anybody else purchase one of the Medal Boxes that were advertised recently in the Attachment.  Sandy Michels did and he claims he it really looks good.  I have now ordered one.

Does anybody want to meet up on August 18 at Martin Place to commemorate Vietnam Veterans (Long Tan) Day.  Have been trying to confirm the Commemoration Ceremony will be taking place – I can not confirm it online.  If it does go ahead Spook Cairns and Jack Davey intend to be there. Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks and Ted Hase has indicated he will not be attending.

If you are a bowler and want to play AIF Bowls.  Received a letter from Eric Chamberlain the Secretary of the National Digger’s Bowl Carnival stating that the dates for the carnival in Dubbo are 15, 16 and 17 September.  There is a preliminary competition being held on 13 September.  Both competitions are in the same format as previous years.  Let me know if you wish to attend and compete under our banner.  If you wish to come with your mates and play under a different banner, that’s brilliant, it will be just great to catch up to share a yarn or three.  Russ Loane, Doug Wilson, Nev Thomas, John Smith who was in the 8th intake is a starter and me.  Barry Andrew has pulled.   Spike Jones (WA) is waiting to see what the travel restrictions will be before he can commit.   We need more names.  Our group will pay the registration fee if you play with the LEEUWIN 63 group.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan stickers’ please let me know. They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.  I have ordered somme more and also trying to reproduce the ‘Serving under two Ensigns’ stickers.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 2 August 2020

G’day All.  Hope you are all well.  A sad week, having to report Ken Railton’s passing over the bar.  I must report there was considerable confusion in respect of this matter.

Since arriving in Kurrimine Beach I caught up with Wally and Robyn Gawne and Nev Barry on Thursday last week then caught up with Annie and Jerry Oakley in Cairns on Friday (have been catching fish also) and Dean and Debbie Davis.  If you are around this area please call in, I plan to be here until 2nd week in September.  There are several former Matelots living in the area.  If you are in FNQ and would like to catch up, we will be getting together for a lunch in Cairns on Friday 28 August 2020.  Details will be forwarded later.

There are a few articles in this week’s Attachment you might find interesting e.g Defence’s attempt to differentiate between males and females, Russ and Joy Dale helping out the sailors on the visiting ships through the Mission for Seaman plus another DFRDB update and another great read from the Naval Historical Association are some.

Does anybody want to meet up on August 18 at Martin Place to commemorate Vietnam Veterans (Long Tan) Day, Spook Cairns and Jack Davey intend to be there. Schubes will not be there due to the Corona risks.

G’day All. We had our meeting at Rockers last Friday.  We have locked in a date for our Ulverstone Wake, it is 26-28 March 2021.  I mentioned Ulverstone, all who attended agreed on the venue.  The format of the functions will remain the same.  Details of accommodation are being investigated as are function addresses.  As previously advised Mal Chatfield and Terry Dack have been doing research on our behalf.

We have decided to use members of our group as Guest Speakers.  What that means is if you have a story and you can contain yourself to up to 5 minutes, we need you would like to hear your story.  We have a few volunteers already, Shep, Bongo, Tom Houldsworth, Spook, Hoges, Mick Gallagher and Doug Wilson.  We need quite a few more.  Please give it some thought, as this will be a lot of fun.

Why go to Ulverstone, well there is a lot to see in Northern Tasmania.  Shep and Jean have been through there recently and he has agreed to chase up the tourist destinations you may be interested in.

Our get together at the Rockers on Friday 3 July was a boomer.  There were lots of laughs, good food and we had a meeting.  Tom Houldsworth, Bongo, Doug Wilson, John Hatchman, Mike Hogan, Mick Gallagher, Spook, Shep and I were there to sign the book.   Wally Cook, Schubes, James Carroll, Jack Davey, Glen Butler, Ted Hase (not well) Mal Ritchie, Rob Cavanagh, Bristles, Bill Hay and Sandy Michels forwarded their apologies.

Mick Gallagher was presented the 1963 JR of the year for 2019 trophy by Mike Hogan who was the 2018 recipient.  Mick was quite excited about the award, he carried from his home all his trophies including his’ best looking baby in Vancouver 1948 trophy’ plus amongst other awards his LEEUWIN swimming trophies from 1963.

Spoke to Mike Hogan, Spook, Sandy Michels, Jaffa,Tassy, and James Carroll during the week.  James is not travelling too well, he is back in the Cairns Base Hospital as he has had a setback.   All the best for a speedy recovery James.  This also applies to Sandy and Billy Hay.

Russ Loane, Doug Wilson, Barry Andrew, John Smith who was in the 8th intake is a starter and me.

Have been building the Navy Rugby Web site, there is quite a way to go yet, it has been taken offline until it is completed.  The address will be: https://www.ranrugby.com/   The pics are now on Face Book.  Those that played in LEEUWIN in 63 or elsewhere in the 60’s and 70’s URL’s are https://www.facebook.com/pg/NAVY-Rugby-Union-110378749050662/photos/?tab=album&album_id=3000974059991102 and https://www.facebook.com/pg/NAVY-Rugby-Union-110378749050662/photos/?tab=album&album_id=3000984463323395

G’day All. Our get together at the Rockers is commencing 1200ish on this Friday 3 July.  If you haven’t contacted me, there is still plenty of time to make your way to the Rockers.  Anyway, we do have some starters, Tom Houldsworth, Bill Hay, Sandy Michels, Bongo, Doug Wilson, John Hatchman, Mike Hogan, Mick Gallaghe, Spook, Shep and me so far.   Wally Cook, Schubes, James Carroll, Jack Davey, Glen Butler, Ted Hase (not well) and Mal Ritchie have forwarded their apologies.  Do you want to join us in a convivial, present Mick with the JR shield and discuss Tasmania amongst the other lies.

If you have read this week’s Attachment you will notice Mal Chatfield and Terry Dack have been doing some research on our jaunt to Tasmania.  There is a town called Ulverstone which has a RSL Club and a HMAS CANBERRA/HMAS SHROPSHIRE Park, which would be ideal for a BBQ and maybe other functions.  Russ Loane who was a local of Ulverstone has mentioned we should also look at Devonport as there are more facilities there.  As far as guest speakers, I propose we look into our group and have some of these speak.  These are just preliminary guidelines and are open to alteration subject to popular opinion.  Would you be keen to go to Tassy?  If so, please let me know if the time is right for you.  I am happy to run with the detail.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 21 June 2020

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. I reckon today is my favourite day of the year, birthdays are good, Christmas is good, Weddings and Anniversaries are up there, but, today is the shortest day of the year, in my mind the middle of winter, and the prospect of having longer days for the next six months.  Please excuse my indulgence.

Our get together at the Rockers commencing 1200ish on Friday 3 July has received some comments from those outside NSW as some of the borders are closed and may be closed for some time.  Anyway, we have some starters, Tom Houldsworth, Bill Hay, Sandy Michels, Bongo and Jo, Doug Wilson, John Hatchman, Mike Hogan, Mick Gallagher (some time perhaps), Spook and me so far.  Shep will wait until closer to the date to ascertain his status.

As you are aware we have not had a major function in Hobart.  The show of support we had in Darwin last year indicated our group was in favour of having one there.  I am proposing we hold a function in Northern Tasmania in late March 2021.  We have been to Tasmania in late March and the weather has been very pleasant.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 14 June 2020

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. My big news, is we now have a new website.  A mate, Scott Gallon has assisted us in producing a free website.  We haven’t lost the contents of the previous one, he has copied it and added it to the new site.  We now just need to pay domain fees.  Besides being free, it gives us more flexibility as we are not as constrained with data volume.  I have added a new page ‘The Attachments’ (minus the jokes) will be now there for all to see.  I am really happy to achieve this as it has taken some time to get there.

Our function in Tasmania in March/April 2021 is starting to gain traction.  I think it should.  We have all been sitting on our bums for the last three months saving heaps.  Here is an opportunity to get out of the house, get on the road again and meet up with some of your old mates and spend some of that wealth.  There are 15 names contained in the attachment who have indicated they are potential starters.  Importantly Mal Chatfield and Bongo have indicated they are happy to assist in putting it together.  Brent Balchin who lives in Launceston and who may not be able to attend has offered to help, Terry Dack (when we were in Darwin) mentioned he was happy to help and he has a niece who lives in Launceston.  We are on the way.  Do you want to turn up?

Our get together at the Rockers commencing 1200ish on Friday 3 July has received some comments from those outside NSW as some of the borders are closed and may be closed for some time.  Anyway, we have some starters, Tom Houldsworth, Bill Hay, Sandy Michels, Bongo and Jo, Doug Wilson, John Hatchman, Mike Hogan, Mick Gallagher (some time perhaps), Spook, Ted Hase and me so far.  Shep will wait until closer to the date to ascertain his status.   Wally Cook, Schubes, James Carroll, Jack Davey, Glen Butler and Mal Ritchie have forwarded their apologies.  Do you want to join us in a convivial and discuss Tasmania amongst the other lies.

As you are aware we have not had a major function in Hobart.  The show of support we had in Darwin last year indicated our group was in favour of having one there.  To date, I have not received any offers from Tasmanians to assist in hosting this function.  This shouldn’t lessen our resolve.  I am proposing we hold a function in Northern Tasmania in late March 2021.  We have been to Tasmania in late March and the weather has been very pleasant.  There is a town called Ulverstone which has a RSL Club and a HMAS CANBERRA/HMAS SHROPSHIRE Park, which would be ideal for a BBQ and maybe other functions.  As far as guest speakers, I propose we look into our group and have some of these speak.  These are just preliminary guidelines and are open to alteration subject to popular opinion.  Would you be keen to go to Tassy?  If so, please let me know if the time is right for you.  I am happy to run with the detail.

Have you seen the pics of previous major functions taken in WA by Rick and Lea Avey on our FB page.  Additionally, when you meet up with your mates, take a pic and send it to me.  We would all like to see it.

Spoke to Russ Loane, Doug Wilson, Mick Gallagher, Jaffa Robinson and Disco Duck during the week.

G’day All. Have had a chat with Mike Hogan this week, he is considering his options in transferring the ’63 JR of the year trophy’ to Mick Gallagher. Will keep you posted. Have also had conversations with James Carroll, Jaffa Robinson, Al Bock, Sandy Powell and Marty Grogan. All of these blokes may not have joined with us but they are friends of our group.

There must be some pics out there that deserve our FB page. When you meet up with your mates, take a pic and send it to me. We would all like to see it.

In the Attachment there is an article about a Yank submarine during the Second World War, really good read. Sandy Powell also forwarded an ad he received from Telstra which he considers an improvement on their previous offers.

G’day All. Hope there is a little more fun being experienced now. I would have spent last Saturday night with Russ Loane on the way north, coincidentally Russ rang in the evening about another topic and we had a great chat.

In the Attachment there is an article from the ABC articulating the reasons Teddy Sheehan should have been awarded the Victoria Cross. Must admit I have signed the petition in the past trying to promote the upgrade of his decoration. He would have been the first to be awarded a VC in the RAN. It has been knocked back again as there is no new evidence provided to alter the Board’s decision. I reckon the Board must only consist of Public Servants, the Army and RAAF.

G’day All. Happy Mothers Day to all mothers, grand mothers, great grand mothers and especially to the memory of our mothers.

We would have been in Forster today with the Matelot Bowls; to me the prospect of travelling playing competition bowls feels surreal. What is the new normal? We are hoping to run it later in the year if we are allowed. This week is a big week come Friday in NSW, more relaxations, able to swim in an open pool swimming laps and have visitors, Beaudy. Maybe we should run a book on the date when we will be able to travel interstate and when the pubs and clubs are opened. Send in your estimated day.

Thanks to all for your kind words celebrating my birthday.

G’day All. I must admit I am excited about the downgrading of the prohibitions that have been in place over the previous couple of months. Went onto the Bowling green today and had first roll up. My daughter took her 4 kids from the house and visited her mate and her 4 kids. Great for us all. Looking forward to further easing of the restrictions. Saying that I was talking to the blokes at the Bowling Club this afternoon and I was the only one who has put the Corona Virus app which indicates who you come into contact with. They indicated they didn’t want the government to have their info. Must admit I understood the concept of the app was designed to contain the Pandemic. A bit disappointed with the response as I thought everybody wanted the same thing. Paranoia perhaps.

There were several additional pics of you respecting the ANZAC tradition this week. As before they have all been published on our Facebook Page. Have a look to see how we are growing older gracefully.

Rocky Freier has left hospital and is recovering at home. Say G’day, send him an email brian.freier@yahoo.com.au

Congratulations to Mick Gallagher who has been honoured for his service to the community at large in a radio programme. The URL is contained in the Attachment. Additionally there two of four articles from the Naval Historical Society, the remaining two will be published next week.

I travelled over to Kurnell in Botany Bay last Wednesday to celebrate the 250 year anniversary of Jimmy Cook preceded by Isaac Smith landing in Australia. It was a private celebration as the park there were few people in the area of the Monuments. I must admit I have been of the opinion for some time the Governments weren’t interested in celebrating this memorable occasion as has been done in the past 50 year anniversaries and one we witnessed, 1970. To my surprise when I arrived there were several improvements and additions to the artifacts to celebrate the occasion. A new sculpture representing the ribs of a ship have been constructed at the site (I assume ENDEAVOR) and an additional Jetty which contained historical plaques containing the history of the landing from both Cook’s journal and the Aboriginal’s perspective. Really good work. Maybe, the pandemic took the wind out of the sails of the governments. The pics I took were published on my Face Book page, not the 6th and 7th. The only journalists over there were from Sky.

I am still unable to update our website as it is being copied and transited to another server. I expect to have control over it pretty soon.

G’day All. Possibly one of the most memorable ANZAC Day’s any of us have participated in and or witnessed, in lieu of spending time with our mates, we spent time with the most important people in our lives, those who supported us most when we were OS. We had a really good response from you sending your pics of your involvement. They are all on our FB page.

Spoke to Rocky Freier yesterday, he is in Caboolture Hospital, been there a week, he has major problems with his right wrist.

My comment about Rod Hazell growing pineapples in Mandurah has prompted Sandy Powell to correct my geography. Sydney 33.52S is further south than Perth 31.57S. As an aside he pointed out that Adelaide 34.55S is north of Canberra 35.22. Doesn’t look that way on the map. Sandy tells me he has won quite a few beers on the Sydney/Adelaide issue.

Give your mates a ring, send an SMS or an email, I am sure they would appreciate it.

Vale Col Darling who was in the 8th intake, a great bloke. Additionally Vale CMDR Wright, Ross Muller wrote: Hello Ron, I wonder if Commander Wright, who recently passed, served on the Melbourne in 68/69 as Lt Wright. The time line seems to coincide. Regards Ross Muller

G’day All. ANZAC Day is upon us. This will be a very special year, one we will all remember. Dave Hanlon has responded to the article initiated by Jacquie Lambie. Dave’s item is in the attachment, but he recommends and I certainly endorse it asking, we all have our personal ANZAC ceremony, irrespective of the time of day or/and our medical condition, take a selfie or have somebody take a pic of you, forward it to me and I will publish the pic on our Face Book page.

Spoke to Knocker Whyte this afternoon, he and Marilyn are back in the Glass House Mountain’s area, they are both well having recently returned from a trip to Bali and a cruise (shortened) on the Carnival Princess. He has recently spoken to Tank.

Rod Hazell has been sending me pics of his home grown pineapples asking tongue in cheek whether pineapples could be grown in Sydney as Sydney is further north than Mandurah. In Sydney we have difficulty growing anything tropical. Give your mates a ring, send an SMS or an email, I am sure they would appreciate it.

G’day All. Happy Easter to all, ours was pretty quiet. Imagine that would be the case for many. Noticed the golfers are back out playing. Luck buggers getting out.

Had a yarn with Russ Loane over the weekend, he is putting together a little project for Tasmanians. He was born and bred at Ulverstone, a town in Northern Tasmania that has the CANBERRA/SHROPSHIRE Park. Russ will be writing an article on what he plans to do. I have been there several times and really enjoyed the park as we have a nephew who lives there and was married in the Park.

Was surprised on the non response from the pic of the 63 AFL team. Ken Railton helped out with Ian McMutrie’s name. Ken sorted the Aussie Rules officer , surely you can help Nev Barry sort out the players.

G’day All. Still having fun self isolating with the four grandchildren, still home schooling and we go into the school holidays this week, sign of the times.

Spoke to Nev Barry during the week, he lives in FNQ. He needs to travel to Townsville from Tully Heads for medical treatment. He found out last week DVA will provide free transport. G’day All. A week of cancellation of events, our AIF swimming at the Gold Coast was cancelled earlier today. Strong words about the main ANZAC Day marches in Capital cities being called off. Watched the one day cricket against the Kiwis on Friday night to an empty stadium, the Kiwis have called it a day and have gone home due to their government policy on self quarintine. Super Rugby is on hold. Suppose we will all just have to be patient and see what transpires.

Did see a bloke on Saturday with a slab of Corona beer on his shoulder at the local bottle, was he carrying the real Corona virus?

Starters have been slow in notifying me for our get together on Friday 27 March 2020 commencing at 1200ish at the Rockers. You may recall one of the things we were going to do on February 10 was to present the shield to 63 JR of the year for 2019 Mick Gallagher. We couldn’t do this as Mike Hogan had some difficulties in attending due to the big storms. I have looked on the Lennox Walker long term forecast and there are no storms forecast for that date. Do you want to witness this memorable occasion. Doug Wilson indicated he was going to our function at the Rockers then do a show in the city with Trish but cannot confirm there would be a show in the city. Please let me know. Schubes and John Hatchman and Doug Wilson cannot make it.

I will be changing our website to another provider as it should be cheaper and give us more data. It is scheduled to occur within the next week. Will let you know the address.

If anybody wants one or a couple of ‘larikan stickers’ please let me know. They don’t cost you anything as the cost of the sticker and postage will be covered by our group.

Have you met up with any of your 63 mates and have a pic to remember the event. If so, please send it to me to post on our Face Book page.

Did you know this year is the 250th Anniversary of Lieutenant James Cook claiming Australia for the Poms at Possession Island. The big day for all in Sydney is 29 April (now read it is 28th) which is the anniversary of the date Master Will Smith was first ashore in Botany Bay and the first time any of Cook’s crew stepped ashore in New Holland. I have read in the press we will not celebrating this event as we did at the 200 year anniversary.

Ken Railton’s report on the status of the survey is in the Attachment. Since that he has contacted me and is waiting on me to forward him extra data. Its in the mail.

For the sporting types, the Mons Cup will be held in Sydney on Friday 20 March, Matelot Bowls in Forster from Sunday 10 May until Thursday 14 May, then of course the Rugby championships culminating in Navy playing Army in Canberra on Saturday 23 May in Canberra. Go Navy.

G’day All. Have just spent the weekend in Canberra attending the Writers reunion. Despite nearly 20 of our group being ex Writers only Jim Harris and I represented our group. Did catch up with Schubes and Marian before I came home today. Writers are transferring from the Supply and Secretariat branch to the Executive Branch as of Monday 9 March. Their Boss will be the XO.

We are going to have a get together on Friday 27 March 2020 commencing at 1200ish at the Rockers. Please let me know. Schubes and John Hatchman cannot make it.

I will be changing our website to another provider as it should be cheaper and give us more data. It is scheduled to occur within the next week. Will let you know the address.

John Hume contacted me during last week as he wanted a few of our ‘larrikin’ labels. If anybody wants one or a couple please let me know via email.

For the sporting types, the Mons Cup will be held in Sydney on Friday 20 March, there is AIF swimming on the Gold Coast on 4 April, Matelot Bowls in Forster from Sunday 10 May until Thursday 14 May, then of course the Rugby championships culminating in Navy playing Army in Canberra on Saturday 23 May in Canberra. Go Navy.

G’day All. Spoke to Sandy Powell this afternoon, he is not as healthy as he should be. Look in the Attachment and see what happened to Mal and Robyn Chatfield, they were involved in a massive accident.
I have been having problems with my email address book and have been losing addresses, obviously I haven’t lost yours but I have lost quite a few including Mal and Rob Chatfield’s. You may recall it was Mal Chatfield who approached us with the proposal of combining the two intakes at LEEUWIN the 6th and the 7th.
Some interesting historical dits in this week’s attachment.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 16 February 2020

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. As you are all aware the rain and floods caused a lot of havoc on the East Coast last weekend. Ironically, the ceremony was conducted in the best conditions we have experienced at Huskisson. It was warm and dry.

Our thanks to Tom and Val Houldsworth for organizing and donating the wreath for the dedication service. I thank Tom for his kind words at our Breakfast.

Our numbers were impacted due to the weather forecast. Those that turned up were Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug and Trish Wilson, Sandy Powell, John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Wally and Robyn Gawne, Rod Hazell, Mick Gallagher, Ray and Roz Cattermole, Barry and KayMarie Andrew plus me. Was informed by Mike Hogan (had a fall during the storms in Sydney), Bristles and Lou, John Tant plus Ted and Fiona (weather forecast) they could not attend. Overall a tremendous attendance and a great get together. I should mention to those that have not attended a VOYAGER ceremony we do a breakfast the following morning and they are important to our group and really fun.

This was the first occasion Ray and Roz Cattermole attended. Really good to have them onboard.

We did not have the opportunity (through misfortune) of transferring our 63 JR OF THE YEAR SHIELD to our new recipient with Mike having a fall, Mick was there and turned up on time. Hopefully we can arrange the transfer in the new future.

There is an article from ADSO on the Government decision to establish an Independent Commissioner to investigate into Veteran suicides. Must admit I agree completely as a Royal Commission would have only made the lawyers richer and would have been a one off decision based on history. This way we have an ongoing investigation. A great result.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 9 February 2020

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. The fires seem to have been extinguished in NSW and Queensland, we are now concerned about the condition of the roads due to flooding.

Due to the weather John Tant has offered his apologies and decided not to drive at least 7 and a half hours each way to Husky in the abysmal weather. Bristles and Lou are in a similar plight. They will make their mind up tomorrow. Knocker and Marilyn Whyte have also forwarded their best wishes. (going to Bali for their son’s 50th)

As advised earlier there will be a service tomorrow night commencing around 2030 irrespective of the weather conditions. I reiterate, take your wet weather gear…. Possibly need something for inside as well.

Starters so far, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug and Trish Wilson, Sandy Powell (who has offered Mick G, Rod Hazell and me accommodation), John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jill Hogan, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Bongo and Jo DiBetta, Ted and Fiona Hase, Moot Sutton, Wally and Robyn Gawne, Rod Hazell, Mick Gallagher, Ray and Roz Cattermole, Barry and KayMarie Andrews, Bristle and Lou Lassau plus me. This could be our biggest turnout for this annual function (36 so far). We will have people from Queensland, Canberra, WA, country NSW and Sydney attending.

Did you know this year is the 250th Anniversary of Captain James Cook claiming Australia for the Poms. The big day for all is 29 April which is the anniversary of the date Master Smith was first ashore in Botany Bay. I recall in 1970 the celebrations that went on were fantastic. Amongst other things I definitely recall going out to Milner Oval in Sydney to participate in a Rugby knock out competition (I think Gary Angel and I were in the same team), a visiting Pommy cruiser HMS BLAKE came away with the chocolates.

Ken Railton is looking at our survey and will forward a report in due course. (look at his dit in the Attachment). He has made note there were no completely negative comments which is inconsistent with other reports.

For the sporting types there is AIF swimming on the Gold Coast on 4 April, Matelot Bowls in Forster from Sunday 17 May until Thursday 21 May, then of course the Rugby championships culminating in Navy playing Army in Canberra on Saturday 23 May in Canberra. Go Navy.

Did anybody watch the Bushfire Appeal cricket this afternoon in Melbourne. Contained a lot of the big names of yesteryear. What a great game and unbelievably finished in a tie. Ha Ha

G’day All. Quite a bit in the Attachment this week. RSL Queensland through Roger Collins’ sub branch were inquiring about the state of our group that were impacted by the effects of the bushfire. Pretty bloody good, I reckon Something else that is pretty good is James Carroll, he is taking over as the President of the Atherton RSL sub branch and resigning his FNQ RSL position. A little bird also told me (not James) that he made a substantial donation to the same club.

G’day All. The fires are under control, thank heavens for that. It appears as if the ADF have done a good job. Apparently this is the first time in our history the Governor General used his authority to call out the troops. (Reserves)

Advised you incorrectly last week, Rod Hazell only will be attending on 10 February. We have more starters. Spoke to a couple of our blokes this week, Mick Gallagher at swimming, Russ Loane (recovering in hospital from op) and Annie Oakley in Cairns.

Our next function/get together occurs on 10 February in Huskisson for the commemoration of the loss of the sailors in VOYAGER. Starters so far, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug and Trish Wilson, Sandy Powell (who has offered Mick G and me accommodation), John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jill Hogan, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Bongo and Jo DiBetta, Ted and Fiona Hase, Moot Sutton, Wally and Robyn Gawne (bushfires willing), Rod Hazell, Mick Gallagher, John Tant, Ray and Roz Cattermole plus me. G’day All. The fires are still with us, however, I heard most of the South Coast of NSW is now accessable. Have not heard from anyone indicating they were in trouble this week. Bristles and Barry Parker have indicated they have survived.
Another article tonight on the role of the ADF during this bushfire season. Really good to see. Rod and Karin Hazell contacted me today, indicating they will attend the Memorial Service on 10 Feb then will travel south to see one of Rod’s HOBART mates who is not travelling too well.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 5 January 2020

G’day All. Happy New Year to all, hope it is a happy, successful and healthy one. It is hard to concentrate on the positives when so many are suffering from the bushfires. There is many of our group who are in this situation. I posted a pic of John ‘Hatch’ Hatchman on firewatch, have contacted Bristles and Barry Parker and there is a small story with some pics from Ward Hack in our attachment. Everybody is over 70 and still having to pull their weight. Ward had his exit route cut off by a wind change and had to stay and fight the fire to survive.
I know this is an annual appreciation, however, I must thank all those who make regular contributions to our weekly dit, without you these pages would be very hard to fill. I invite you all to contribute with words and pictures, from the responses I receive I know these contributions are appreciated.
I sit back in my living room tonight (as opposed to last Sunday night) and am very proud of the Navy involvement assisting the bushfire victims over the last week. I know we could and should do more. Mates of mine at bowls on Saturday were commenting how happy they were that Navy was assisting Australians in their time of need.

2020, 2020 everytime I say it or type it, I think of the BBL cricket. What a great season for Aussie cricket for the lounge lizards.
