G’day All. Well, Christmas is done and dusted for another year, now is the time to start partying to bring in the New Year.

I am very happy to announce that I have consulted with Schubes and Terry Dack who are past recipients of the Butch Cousins donated ‘1963 EXJR of the year Shield’ to determine the annual winner. This year it has been awarded to Tom Houldsworth. There were several blokes nominated, however Tom is being recognized for the outstanding work he does for our function at Huskison each year and his contribution to the Dubbo Bowls since we have been participating there. You may also recall this as I have mentioned it earlier, but it was Tom and I who agreed to have the first reunion after we had met up with Annie Oakley in Sydney in November 2002. We enjoyed ourselves so much catching up we thought of bringing together the whole group. Enough said.
Congratulations Tom.

Conversely, it is my melancholy duty to report those that passed over the bar in 2016. Kim Potaczala (Potts) in April, Mick Gilfoyle (Tinfoyle) in May, Merv Semfel in August and Peter Renwick in December. Very sad to see our brothers go.

This year we did not do any Dedication Plaques. Remember your mates, if you want to do one, our group will pay for it and we will help you where we can to put the eulogy together. I will also arrange the service through the Garden Island Padres. There is normally two services a year. If you want your mate remembered for posterity at Garden Island let me know.

Were you there - we met on February 10 in Husky, 6 May at the Rockers, 20 May at the Brekkie Creek pub in Brisbane, early June at Mudjimba RSL on the Sunshine Coast, the Balaclave Hotel in August in Cairns, September in Dubbo during the AIF bowls and our Christmas bash in November at the Rockers.

I know a lot of you blokes have caught up with your mates during the year. I know I have caught up with several people when they are in Sydney, also caught up with Rocky Freier on the Sunny Coast, Norm Friebe, John Hatchman and Fred Howe on independent occasions. It has been a good year for me.

February 10 at Husky is now less than two months away. Those that want to attend need to start arranging accommodation.

We are now 10 months away from the Canberra reunion. Before you know it we will be on the way down the Federal Highway. Schubes has called a meeting of the Canberra 2017 committee on 10 February at Husky. We currently have 35 paid up starters. Michael Alymer and Lizbeth Hedge have confirmed their attendance. Contact the Registrar, Barry Parker on yyandamurra@bigpond.com or 0419 767 213. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise. This will be the time to gauge whether we continue to have two yearly reunions or maybe we will adopt another format for getting together. So don’t miss out on this one.

Russ Loane, Doug Wilson Tom Houldsworth along with Ron Pope are now potential starters for next year’s Navy Bowls to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If the dates fit John Grenfel may also be a starter. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. I have been in contact with Buckets (organiser). He has confirmed there are more than 50 starters. He will give further advice on exact dates in the New Year.

Face Book – A pic of the DE and two other pics forwarded by Brent Balchin. Have a look and see whether you would be interested in buying a print at our reunion in 2017.

G’day All. Merry Christmas to all our brothers and sisters from the 63 Group. Hope Christmas treats you right and you have the company you want.

We have our daughters and their respective families in Sydney with us for the next few weeks so are out celebrating. Promises to be a great fortnight.

February 10 at Husky is now less than two months away. Those that want to attend need to start arranging accommodation.

Who served on the BRISBANE, I did, I was in the 2nd crew, I posted in the day it came back from the Gunline the first time. The reason I say this as there is now another BRISBANE; there are two articles this week on the new ship. Articles on WATERHEN, SYDNEY and the Siege of Tobruk are all interesting dits. The Leeuwin vision forwarded by Jeff Wake and a fitting poem to celebrate Christmas are also in the enclosure this week.

We are now 10 months away from the Canberra reunion. Before you know it we will be on the way down the Federal Highway. G’day All. We lost a brother from our intake when Peter Renwick passed over the bar this week and we lost another brother from an earlier intake when Graham Sloper left us. Our collective condolences go to Pete’s family on their sad loss and I spoke on our behalf at Graham’s funeral. A copy of the eulogy which includes your input’s is in the attachment.

In the Attachment this week, Mal and Robyn Chatfield are celebrating 50 years, whoopee. Hoss offers a few words on Graham Sloper. Jeff Wake has forwarded the ‘Leeuwin vision plan’, there is an interesting article on the Equator and the International Date line, a reunion to go to and some articles I am confident you will be interested in. There are also quite a few jokes this week.

Schubes has called a meeting of the Canberra 2017 committee on 10 February at Husky. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. G’day All. Our next function is February 10 at Husky, which is a way off. Put it in your diary. Husky is a great place to visit and the event commemorates an important date in our lives.

There must be lots of people out there who are catching up around Christmas and have some happy snaps to publish and a story to tell. Let us all know what is happening when you meet your mates.

I caught up with Mick Gallagher on Tuesday night, he has joined me at Manly Leagues swimming club. We intend entering in next year’s AIF championships at Grafton in March. Needless to say after one meeting, yes one, everybody at Manly Leagues now knows Mick and of course he knows them.

Schubes has called a meeting of the Canberra 2017 committee on 10 February at Husky. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

It has been a quiet week news wise, however, Schubes met up with Peter Hartwell; Graham Sloper who is now in hospital after a fall is being recognized by his mates; a good sea dit from the 2nd World War, an article on Agent Orange which is compulsive reading and a few jokes to tell your mates.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 27 November 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Rockers on Friday was a success. We had a good time. Unfortunately due to ill health Mike Hogan and Phil Clements could not attend. John (Hatch) Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Tom Houldsworth, Kev Bock, Spook Cairns, Ted Hase, Doug Wilson, Mick Gallagher, Michael Alymer and Ken Scarisbrick. Schubes, Peewee Petherick, Brissles Lassau and Brian Gorringe forwarded their apologies.

Mick Gallagher brought a Christmas Cake which was demolished. We had lunch, had a few beers and told a few yarns. Really good to catch up. Unfortunately I forgot to take any pics. So for those who attended, and you cant remember their faces, you will have to go to the next function to see them. Most indicated they will be at the Canberra reunion, however have not paid up their deposit or emailed Barry.

I recently had my computer and network completely cleaned and tested. I say this as there has been a few responses indicating the Attachment has been crashing. It may be a Mac verses a Windows thing. Not sure.

For the sporting lizards (me included) it has been really pleasing to see Australia has had a few wins, just won the 3rd test at Adelaide despite being belted in Hobart, the Kangaroos won the 4 Nations Rugby League, unfortunately, sniff, sniff, the Wallabies were knocked over by Ireland by a few points. I missed the 2nd test in Hobart as I was in Adelaide but have made it up by watching quite a bit of this test. Great to see the young blokes given a chance and really good to see they come up with the goods.

Still no responses to anybody knowing John Hunter. He may have not turned up at LEEUWIN. I did receive an email from one of Doug Rasmussen’s mates Allan Winchcombe. He recalls Mick Hunter who was an SE but was not our intake. John Hunter’s number was R93860.

Russ Loane, Doug Wilson Tom Houldsworth along with Ron Pope are now potential starters for next year’s Navy Bowls to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. I am in the process of checking on next years Navy Bowls. There is a conflicting date of 2018 in lieu of 2017. I will confirm to all starters when I know. There are currently 45 starters for 2017 probably now closer to 50 by including us. Time will tell whether it is a goer.

Schubes has called a meeting of the Canberra 2017 committee on 10 February at Husky. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. Contact the Registrar, Barry Parker on yyandamurra@bigpond.com or 0419 767 213. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

There is a lot in this week’s Attachment. Moot Sutton has an update, Mike Shephard attended a DO’s reunion, Judy Potter forwarded an email about the effect of the new regulations commencing in Jan 2017 in respect of the pension. I have included the figures as supplied by AMP to me. There’s lots more and a really good joke to tell your mates.

G’day All. We have 16 starters for the Rockers function this Friday at 1200, beauty, looking forward to catching up, gotta be better than watching cricket, well at the moment anyway. The Wallabies are scraping through and the Kangaroos go into the Grand Final of the four nations tomorrow morning.

Had a very pleasant lunch with Fred Howes and his sailing mate Dave in Port Adelaide pub on Thursday . There was not one lie told by either of the ex sailors, could have been one or two porkies told by an ex PMG employee; can’t trust civvies. Such is life. Pie Pieda would have attended but had a much bigger priority, Ross. All the best Ross and Pie. Nifty Nev Thomas, Bob Stupple and Terry Dack all forwarded their apologies.

Thanks for the response to last weeks dit. There appears to be a problem with some of the items or images I copy which I include in the Attachment. I will discontinue copying images that come through as emails. Other responses in respect of Operation Bursa and Graham Sloper are included in the attachment as is an update on the future of LEEUWIN forwarded by Ken Dobbie.

The Rockers function is this Friday and we will have a merry crew and possibly our largest Christmas function (numbers) in Sydney. John (Hatch) Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Tom Houldsworth, Mike Hogan, Kev Bock, Spook Cairns, Ted Hase, Doug Wilson, Mick Gallagher, Michael Alymer and Ken Scarisbrick. Phil and Joan Clements are possible starters. Unfortunately Schubes is on his way back from Warrnambool and cannot make it (He may be catching up with Glenn Butler) and Brian Gorringe has also sent his apologies. Please let me know if you intend to turn up.

Russ Loane, Doug Wilson Tom Houldsworth along with Ron Pope are now potential starters for next year’s Navy Bowls to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay. I will forward details as they come to hand.

Anybody else firming up for October 2017. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. G’day All. The 46th week of the year; less than 6 weeks to Christmas!!!! Am in Adelaide this week for a few days to help our daughter Sharon look after her billylids. Expect to be at the Ice Hockey rink every day. Fred Howes has been in contact with me, we are going to catch up at the Birkenhead Tavern at Port Adelaide at about 1200 on Thursday for lunch. Pie and Ross Pieda are starters also. Does anybody have a better offer.

Had some response from last weeks Attachment. Tom Houldsworth was involved with Operation Bursa but nobody has reacted to the Kev Uttley pic. Did everybody receive it; I thought I recognised at least two of our group there. Please let me know if the email isn’t coming through properly. I am happy to have another go at it.

Does anybody know Graham Sloper. He was a Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander for the majority of our groups time. He paid off as a Commodore. He played a lot of sport particularly Rugby, Hockey and Waterpolo. It is my melancholy duty to inform you Graham has posted on his FB page that he has 12 months to live. He lives in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, in fact I joined the Avalon Sub Branch as he was the President. We served together a couple of times at KUTTABUL then when he was the CO of SUCCESS during the first Gulf War. Great bloke, great officer, a real gentleman.

The Rockers function is nearly on us and we will have a merry crew. We meet at 1200 on Friday 25 November for our Christmas function. John (Hatch) Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Tom Houldsworth, Mike Hogan, Kev Bock, Spook Cairns, Ted Hase, Doug Wilson, Mick Gallagher and Michael Alymer. Phil and Joan Clements are possible starters. Unfortunately Schubes is on his way back from Warrnambool and cannot make it (He may be catching up with Glenn Butler) and Brian Gorringe has also sent his apologies. G’day All. The cricket season is back. Yippee. The Wallabies are on tour so there is a bit to look forward to, however I don’t think the Wallaby game are on free to air which is a bummer.

I mentioned last week about the print Brent Balchin sent me. Brent has responded to my comment about the quality of my photo by sending me a better data copy of it plus two other pics. These are now on our FB page. Have a look at them. I need to reiterate, Brent volunteers his money and his time to our group. He receives absolutely nothing from the proceeds of these prints except alcolades he deserves.

I have been in contact with Terry Coulthard this week, he is well and is another of us who is still working. He has his own business.

The Rockers function is nearly on us. We meet at 1200 on Friday 25 November for our Christmas function. John (Hatch) Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Tom Houldsworth, Mike Hogan, Kev Bock, Spook Cairns, Ted Hase, Doug Wilson, Mick Gallagher and Michael Alymer. There is an article on Operation Bursa in the attachment this week and a lot of other historical items, I suppose this is not unusual as we are starting to be called historical by our Grandchildren. Operation Bursa was about the protection by air support of Australian Oil Rigs 1980-1989. Were you involved in this. Fred Howes is out and about in SA, Larraine Utterley has forwarded a wedding photo that was taken on hers and Kevin’s wedding 49 years ago. She is looking for a bit of ID. (I do know we will get some recognition in our group) There are a few jokes also.

Anybody else firming up for October 2017. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. G’day All. Is summer really happening. Had a few days this week in Sydney that were reasonably warm, really I cannot understand why I came back to Sydney from FNQ so early. Saying that it is still blowing a gale there and nobody is catching fish. Looking at the birthday list it has been a long time since I have seen these blokes.

Have received the print from Brent Balchin during the week. I have copied it and it is in the Attachment and in our FB. I must admit my photographic skills do not do the pic any justice. It is intended to auction this type of superior print at the next reunion in 2017. The drawing Brent sent me is of a DE ‘one of the first four as it has the LWO2 on top’. Why this is different to other posters is the quality of the fabric as explained by Brent. ‘Altering the original photo to look like a pencil drawing is the first step and the important second step is being able to print on large, fine art rag paper. That print on normal media looks very ordinary. The media is Sihl Masterclass textured Matt cotton paper. It is 320 gsm which is fairly thick. That's probably not going to mean much to the old JR's but at least by having a print you can see the difference that the media makes. I'll do two more, that size or larger, and post them to you in a larger roll.’

Russ Loane and Doug Wilson along with Ron Pope are now potential starters for next year’s Navy Bowls to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay.

We are going to meet at Rockers at 1200 on Friday 25 November for our Christmas function. Please let me know if you intend to turn up.

In the attachment this week; an email from Brian Gorringe who is finally paying off. He must be the oldest fulltime serving member in the Puss. Doug, Rick and Ron have a say. As mentioned earlier a pic of an old DE, an article on the VENGEANCE, functions and memorials. Plus a bit more. Enough to keep somebody interested, hope it is you.

Anybody else firming up for October 2017. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. G’day All. Schubes came to Sydney with Marian to do some babysitting. We met up for coffee this afternoon at Circular Quay. We didn’t make it to the Paragon, the First and Last or the Ships Inn. How’s that for growing older disgracefully. Are we failures?

We discussed amongst other things the reunion next year which he is chairing. The numbers are still low, however, we are both optimistic that will change as October looms. It does help to give him numbers so he can book activities.

Had a yarn to Brent Balchin during the week. He is well. Brent is donating more gear leading into the 2017 reunion. I will be advertising this ASAP. Thanks again to Brent who donates not only his time but also resources and postage towards our group.

For the first week since wishing birthday congratulations in the Attachment we have nobody in our group to congratulate during the period 23 – 29 October.

Nobody else has put their hand up for next year’s Navy Bowls to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. I intend being there and don’t want to be lonely. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay.

We are going to meet at Rockers at 1200 on Friday 25 November for our Christmas function. John (Hatch) Hatchman, Mike Shephard, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Tom Houldsworth, Mike Hogan, Kev Bock, Spook Cairns and Ted Hase, unfortunately Schubes is on his way back from Warrnambool and cannot make it (He may be catching up with Glenn Butler). Please let me know if you intend to turn up.

The Attachment this week contains some interesting Naval History and a question on RAN History – you may be able to help. Terry Dack is certainly looking for a new career, I thought he was but a humble market gardener, but no he is now a beekeeper (designate). There are a few jokes also.

Anybody else firming up for October 2017. We currently have 33 paid up starters. Spook Cairns has confirmed his attendance. Contact the Registrar, Barry Parker on yyandamurra@bigpond.com or 0419 767 213. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

Face Book – I have a pic of Quigs celebrating his 70th. Unfortunately, it will not make FB, if you would like a look let me know. Tom Houldsworth at Lords is our latest pic. Tom and Val are currently touring UK.

G’day All. Starting to get a few more names for our next function at the Rockers. Are you coming. We have two interstaters turning up. Good to see the Kangaroos beat the Kiwis last night, we can beat them sometimes at something. I know it is not Rugby. I am surprised nobody has asked me for a copy of a pic of Quig’s on his 70th birthday. It will not be going on our Facebook.

Spoke to Mike Hogan during the week. He is having extensive eye surgery in the near future, on the positive side he is buying a new Commodore Black series and very excited about it.

Next year Navy is trying to put a Bowls Competition together to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay.

G’day All. The NRL and AFL are done and dusted for another year, both Sydney and Melbourne ended up with a trophy apiece. We have one of our daughters and grandchildren from Adelaide spending a week with us so have been out and about a bit in the Northern Beaches.

Thank you all for helping me out with the speech by ex LEEUWIN DO Lieutenant Jim Dickson. His speech is now ensconsed in our 2010 reunion website page. Schubes did the research and came up with the goods. Have a read, to add a little spice to it, imagine the speaker addressing a crowd of 1100 and a chandelier falling from a 40 ft roof onto the dance floor in front of him and us. Bloody scary it was. Thanks also to Ken Dobbie, Dick Lewin and Bob Saunders for their assistance.

Had a yarn to Dick Lewin today, he is not travelling as well as he should be, has been in and out of hospital and is now having a cataract problem with his eyes. Get well soon mate.

Next year Navy is trying to put a Bowls Competition together to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay.

The Attachment this week contains info from Mike Shephard, Wally and Robyn Gawne, Jeff Dunn, Greg Williams, Darkie and Shirley Rowland plus Jeff Wake. There are some DVA facts sheet URL’s, a good dit about flight decks on aircraft carriers (must watch), bibs and bobs and a few jokes.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 18 September 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. What a fun week we had in Dubbo. As mentioned last week we took a pic of our group on Monday and inserted it on Face Book. Who was there: Russ Loane, Dave Pescott (aged 91 going on 50 WW2 RAAF) Russ’ mate, Barry and KayMarie Andrews, Mal and Pauline Ritchie, Tank and Phyllis Evans, Sandy Powell, Spike Jones and myself. There were a lot of ex-matelots there, one bloke served in the AUSTRALIA. Every game was a blast meeting the competitors and sharing their stories. Really a fun time.

We (Barry, Mal and I) played Spike’s team in the last game of the comp. Spike plays with a father son duo of Dave and Gryz Adams. Both Dave and Gryz were there on the way to the ADF Nationals.

On the way back to Sydney from Dubbo, I caught up with John and Lynn Hatchman in Mudgee. They were there competing in the Ex-Services Golf Tour. They both look well and will be competing in Dubbo this coming week. Hatch tells me the comp lasts for 44 weeks of the year, sometimes there are two competitions running concurrently in two different locations in NSW. If you are a keen golfer, what a way to go.

Next year Navy is trying to put a Bowls Competition together to be played in May at Forster Tuncurry. If you are interested in competing or just turning up to say G’day, please let me know. The Navy holiday accommodation at Forster will be the place of choice to stay.

We are going to meet at Rockers at 1200 on Friday 25 November for our Christmas function. Please let me know if you intend to turn up.

Received some compliments about our weekly rag, primarily the input from you and in particular Dolly’s ‘Tales from Tasmania’. Inquiries were made about Mick Gallagher, many are guessing he does not know who the real Mick Gallagher is as he hasn’t surfaced for some time. Have not been in contact with either recently.

I was also asked about the speech made by the guest speaker at the 2010 reunion at the Burwood Casino in Perth. Thought I had a copy, I have checked our website and looked at the Tingira site but cannot find it. If anyone has a copy could you please forward it to me.

I must apologise for some omissions from our weekly Birthdays. Happy Birthday to Norm Friebe who turned 70 and Jeff Wake who turned 69 in the past two weeks. Sorry for the omission blokes, it was unintentional. If I have missed your birthday please let me know, would love to congratulate you on your special day.

Has anybody been in contact with Bruce Oliver, when I was checking on the birthlay list after being reminded of my omissions, I came across Bruce’s name, if you have been in contact with him, please ask him to touch base.

You may recall last week I mentioned how John Miscamble was crook, well Missy has responded: Hi all, Well I am back albeit with my wings clipped. Thanks for all of your best wishes and your visits. If I have missed any body my apologies. Thanks also for supporting Luba.
Tony, will you give my sincere thanks to Phil and Wayne please thank Rodney for me, Alan thank Motor also. Thank you all John Miscamble

There have been further discussions on the disposal of LEEUWIN. Alan Rogers and Jeff Wake attended those discussions, both have forwarded a report. Well worth the read. Poisons in the RAN during our time. Other Associations nes. Quite a few jokes, some quite un PC, but funny so please do not take offence. An entertaining Attachment. There is so much this week the pics of the development of Leeuwin Barracks are included in our FB page due to their size.

Face Book – Two new pics this week. Our group in Dubbo on Monday and a pic of Barry Andrew, Mal Ritchie and myself in the commemorative shirts on Thursday. And we now have the pics of the development of Leeuwin Barracks as forwarded by Ken Dobbie.

G’day All. Dubbo AIF Bowls this coming week. I am excited, really looking forward to it. Catching up with the boys and girls. Have caught up with Russ Loane, Barry Andrews and Sandy Powell (spectator) this afternoon. Spike (Ron) Jones is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, (Spike is not playing for us, he plays with his local team from WA), along with Mal Ritchie and Tank Evans (spectator). Look what the rest of you are missing out on.

I know Tank Evans caught up with Phil Clements and Spook Cairns when he was at the Central Coast attending his father’s funeral. Phil rung on Friday, confirming this and to state he (Phil) was being turned into hospital.

Have been in contact with Luba Miscamble, she tells me John (Missy) is still in rehab but expects to come home Friday, she states he is not as well as he could be; he recently was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia.

Do you want to get your Medical or Service Records from Navy, listen to a top rendition of the ‘Last Post’, these amongst other items are included in the Attachment.

G’day All. Happy Father’s Day to all you grumpy old buggers. Congratulations to all you Dads and Grand-dads and I guess Great Grand Dads, despite the commercialism it is great to catch up and talk to the kids. Spring has sprung, rain has hit Sydney early in the month but I am looking forward to the next couple of weeks of perfect weather.

Our condolences to Tank Evans and his family, Tank has lost his father. He was 91.

Nev Thomas is still doing his bit at the Marion Sub Branch in Adelaide, Max Borthwick says G’day, these notes are in the Enclosure along with a few jokes and a few articles you may find interesting.

How the wheel turns; Glen Butler, Wally Gawne and I have been contacted by an old flame of Rex Geoghegan. As you know Rex has left us many years ago to live with St Peter and his group of angels. We have been able to give Sue a contact with his sister. They were both stoked to have a chat about him.

What has happened to Mick Gallagher, in the media this week, I have been listening to a Michael Gallagher who has been referred by the ACCC to the DPP. He has been kicked off the front bench and expelled from the Liberal Party in NSW and again later in the week when Michael Gallagher is found with a positive result of a banned substance just prior to boarding a plane for Rio. He is the current Olympic cycling champion. Who is the real Mick Gallagher? I thought he was a good bloke, I feel deceived. I need a Bex and a good lie down.

I received several responses to the language used by you in your emails which I forward in the Weekly News. None of the responses were critical of my editing. As such, the status quo will prevail.

Anybody else firming up for October 2017. Please let Barry Parker know. We currently have 30 paid up starters. Roger and Dee Collins have come onboard. Contact the Registrar, Barry Parker on yyandamurra@bigpond.com or 0419 767 213. Could you please indicate which functions you will be attending. We need to know so we can keep track on numbers in particular the luncheon boat cruise.

AIF bowls at Dubbo 13-15 September. We have 4 confirmed starters Barry Andrew, Mal Ritchie, Russ Loane and myself. Russ has recruited his mate Dave. Tank Evans and Phyllis will be there to lead the supporters club.

Face Book – No new articles this week, our two most recent pics are Dolly Gray doing what he does best at his home in sunny Tassy and Nev Barry, Smouch (Kev) Smith at LEEUWIN in 63 outside the Winjan 2 accommodation block.

G’day All. Met up with Nev Barry tonight in Mackay, he is going camping this week, so he must be well. He sent me a pic some time ago from LEEUWIN in 63, it is now on Facebook. Spoke to Annie Oakley and Russ Loane.

John Grenfell attended the Long Tan 50th Anniversary in Townsville, Mike Shephard is asking ‘whether you are offended by some of the language used in our group’s emails’. If you are, please let me know (your names will not be published) and I will further edit the documents. Currently I do not publish any articles that I consider would be offensive (in bad taste) to our group in general. G’day All. Sad news to hear of Merv (Sammy) Semfel’s passing. Our joint condolences to his family and friends. I have posted the following including Sammy’s pic in our website. Our thanks to Ken Dobbie for letting us know.

‘I am saddened to report that Merv Semfel passed away in Liverpool hospital last night after a very long and brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Bev who rang me this morning with the news. Funeral arrangements are to be a private family arrangement in Coffs Harbour. Merv served proudly in the Hobart in its first deployment to Vietnam and was a strong advocate for wider recognition to operations such as "Sea Dragon" and how such battles were portrayed in the Australian War Memorial.

A good mate who will be sadly missed.

Ken Dobbie’

I had a nightmare last night, I dreamt the Wallabies played the All Blacks, am hoping I don’t wake up as it had to be a dream.

G’day All. How good are the games, who doesn’t know their current sleep pattern. I don’t. I am having trouble getting away from the box before midnight. The forecast for the Cassorwary Coast is for too much wind up here to get out fishing during the next three days, thank God for the sport. Great results by incredible athletes.

Talking about sport, Navy have made positive measures to reintroduce the Dempster Cup in a different format. Great news for the Rugby heads.

What a big week in front of us for the Diggers of our time. It is the 50th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan. I also believe there will be further recognition of some of the participants of this battle, particularly the grunts. The correspondence I have read about this battle certainly infers a lot of combatants efforts were missed or not recorded in the washup. If you get an opportunity go out and participate in the ceremony on the 18th. We generally meet on Long Tan Day at Martin Place at about 0945 for the 1000 kick off. If you are in Sydney and wish to attend turn up and commemorate the day.

G’day All. Gold, Gold, Bronze, bloody beauty. What a way to spend the nights, it is so exciting. Last week when we met in Cairns, Charlie Wright told us about his experience when the MELBOURNE and VOYAGER collided. Charlie for those who know him, know he is a musician, he still sings and plays to this day. However, 2050ish on 10 February 1964, he with Darby Ashton and a few of his mates were practicing in the bowels of the ship, I think Charlie mentioned 8 deck. When the collision occurred they thought the ship had run over a submarine. They scampered. Really interesting to hear his story.

G’day All. We met at the Balaclava Hotel in Cairns on Friday for lunch. You had to be there to get the joke but some of us were more pragmatic and selective in our choice of meal than others; especially the meat eaters. Who turned up: Annie and Jerry Oakley, James Carroll, Bob and Pat Stupple, Tom Houldsworth, Charlie Wright, Shaun and Lucy (son and daughter in law of Jerry and Annie Oakley), Michael Giveen and me. Apologies were received from Mike Shephard, Hypen Henderson-Smith, Nev Barry and John Hatchman.

Had a few finger problems with dispatch of the the emails last week. Hope everybody received the letter and the attachment.

G’day All. Hyphen’s comment last week about Graham Potaczala has revealed that he is indeed deceased. We have lost another mate. Thanks to Davo and James Carroll for their investigatory work. Potsy was born in Utica NY on 16 February 1947. He discharged from the RAN in January 1965. He did serve in Vietnam during 1970 with the US Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal with clusters. He also lived in McAllen Texas and passed away on 26 April this year. His funeral arrangements were made by the Memorial funeral home of San Juan in Texas. Besides meeting Hypen during his R & R time in Sydney, Annie Oakley also remembers meeting him on Bondi Beach after being discharged from the US Army. Annie recalls Potsy wanted to settle in Northern NSW.

Spent a day during the week with Annie Oakley fishing at Kurrimine Beach. Lots of small fish and squillions of sand flies. Had a great afternoon. Annie is working on a location for our function in Cairns.

The starters for Cairns get together on Friday 29 July are Hyphen Henderson-Smith, James Carroll, Annie Oakley and me. Nev Barrie who lives in Mackay (6 hours away) was a starter however he has an appointment with a specialist in Brisbane too close to that date. Am hoping to meet with Charlie Wright and anybody else that is in the area. Are there any starters from those on the road who are in the area.

Has anybody been in contact with Warren Heath, his email address is not responding.

G’day All. Nev Barrie and Greg Henderson-Smith came to Kurrimine Beach today to catch up and share a few yarns. Nev lives in Mackay and Hypen and his wife Kerry live at Mission Beach.

Amongst other things, we talked about Graham Potaczala. Hypen recalls, Pots’ family migrated to the US in 63, consequently he discharged from the RAN and moved OS with them. He then recalls Pots was conscripted into the US Military. In 1965 Hypen caught up with Pots when he was on R & R in Sydney. He hasn’t heard from him since, however, he thinks he was killed in Vietnam. I have spent some time tonight trying to Google the US Vietnam ‘wall of honor’. I cannot find any Potaczala’s on the list; I found it difficult to research and found the web sites quite convoluting. If anybody would like to chase this up; please do.

G’day All. Caught us with Annie and Jerry Oakley this week, they are well. Spoke to Spook Cairns and Rod Hazell also, Rod gave me some info on Charlie Wright who lives in Cairns.

Our group are beginning to celebrate their 70th birthday. We had our youngest and oldest in the one week. Russ Loane is our youngest as I mentioned last week, our oldest is Pie Pieda, his birthday was yesterday. Happy belated birthday Pie, and no, you are not the grumpiest of our intake….tho Ross did mention you in dispatches.

Tom Kinross responded about the 75th Anniversary port, he has a bottle, however, he thought it may have gone off because it was so old, I advised Tom, to be safe, he shouldn’t try it alone, I will help him do the taste test next February.

During this last month, we did not receive any new nominations for our reunion in Canberra in October 17. We currently have 28 paid up starters. G’day All. Who knows where Kurrimine Beach is?. Bloody rainy part of FNQ. Haven’t caught a keeper yet and the Wallabies have been white washed by England. Not a good week. The upside is ‘the forecast for mackeral is on the way’ and the Wallabies are going to be rescued by the European connection. Patience.

Spoke to Nev Barry and Spook Cairns, they are well. Nev hopes to catch up in August. Nobody responded about the 75th Anniversary port, does this mean, you have drank yours, your didn’t buy a bottle, or more sensibly you are going to keep it for yourself.

There is another inquiry commencing, similar to the DART Report which includes LEEUWIN amongst other Defence Establishments. I am not sure of the reasons for this further inquiry. Jimmy Donsworth Dad (Billy) has passed away, I remember him when he attended the Dedication Plaque ceremony at GI. John Hume forwarded this: Mark Donsworth has passed the word that a remembrance service will be held for Billy approx. 1200 on Friday 24th June at the Anglican Church Iluka. Billy is to be cremated off site and returned to the family. It would be nice if those able to could attend. Billy often talked about the Leeuwin boys that called in to see him on their way north. AIF bowls at Dubbo in September, I have had a few games practicing at Silkwood Bowls Club on a synthetic surface, a little different, Danny Tiley from Yuleba would be in his element. G’day All. Have arrived in Atherton after a fantastic week fishing in Burketown. Get up there before the road is completely bitumened and the hordes arrive, there are plenty of fish to be caught and the pub though not quaint serves cold beer in 31 degree winter weather.

When in Burketown I studied the Battle Honours of the RAN to date 1986 by perusing the back of the 75th Anniversary Port during our evening banter. What a investment it turned out to be those years ago. If you want to share your bottle with me, give me a call; it is yumee.

Did anybody receive a Queen’s Birthday Honour? Dolly is very disappointed in the system used to select the recipients. Also there is some very interesting articles of history, HMS HOOD and the passing of an ExSubmariner aged 98, compulsive reading and watching. G’day All. My mate Ron Strom and I are on the road. During the week we caught up Rocky and Linda Freier at Ginji, Russ Loane, Henry Ptak, Max Lampo and his partner Ann at the Mudjimba RSL, unfortunately Peewee Petherick, Tank Evans and Knocker Whyte could not make it; then on Saturday we stopped for a coffee at Kalkivan enroute to Miles and coincidentally met up with Narelle and Norm Friebe (bloody small world) and today we caught up with Danny Tiley.

If you are lucky enough to catch up with one of our group, please take the time to take a pic and send it to me, a lot of people are happy to see them.

Who remembers David McFarlane, he joined with us in January 63, was in Yagan 2 then Mokare 1. He became a Writer and I haven’t seen or heard from or of since. He made a comment on our facebook page. Just goes to show social networking does have benefits.

Russ Loane his mate Dave, Ron and I played bowls for two days at Mudjimba. The CEO of the club is Terry Oxley, Terry was a pressure head and later changed to Mine warfare. AIF bowls at Dubbo in September. We are still recruiting. Let me know if you wish to register. The 3 days cost $50 a head and includes lunch. G’day All. Very sad news indeed, to hear about the demise of ‘Tinfoyle’ Mick Gilfoyle. Mick Gallagher represented us at his funeral service on Thursday; a pic of the coffin with his Chief’s cap resting on the White Ensign is on our Facebook page. Mick has indicated the service was very well attended and he will provide a report. The comments received from Stan Church, John Hume, Rob Cavanagh, Peewee Petherick, Russ Loane, Benny Hill and Schubes were passed to Tinfoyle’s family by Mick Gallagher.

Hands up all those who didn’t get a laugh out of ‘Dolly’s apology’ last week. It was great. I also mentioned Marian and Schubes caught up with Mal and Robyn Chatfield in Batlow, there is a pic you may like to see plus plenty more in this week’s Attachment.

I hit the road today and expect to be away from Sydney for 3 months, going to Queensland fishing via Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast; I expect to catch up with Rocky Freier in Bribie Island, Russ Loane on the Sunshine Coast, Danny Tiley in Yuleba on the way to Burketown where we will be targeting Catfish ‘we really are fishing for barra’. Then to Kurrimine Beach, which is 100k south of Cairns for two months returning to Sydney in early September to go to the AIF, bowls at Dubbo. I expect to meet up with more of our group in the Far North including Annie Oakley, Nev Barry and James Carroll and possibly Rob Cavanagah who is holidaying in Mareeba.

AIF bowls at Dubbo in September. We are still recruiting. Let me know if you wish to register. The 3 days cost $50 a head and includes lunch. There is an additional game on the Sunday prior to the AIF. This costs $60 a team of 3.

Canberra 2017 If you intend attending please register now. Mike and Jill Hogan are the most recent to indicate their interest. G’day All. Kev (Smouch) Smith, Russ Loane, Ken Fielding, Jim Harris and I met on Friday night at the Breakfast Creek hotel for dinner and drinks, had lots of fun, a few ales ‘on the wood’ then met up on Saturday at Ballymore for the Navy V Army contests. At Ballymore, we were joined by John and Luba Miscamble. Had a great afternoon despite the scores of the Men’s and Women’s game. We of course are now looking to an improved performance in 2017 by the Navy squad. To keep the record straight Navy Old Salts did flog the Army Leopards in first game of the day. We then adjourned to the Pineapple Hotel for post game refreshments.

I received an email from Schubes indicating he and Marian met up with Mal and Robyn Chatfield. Tank gives an update on his health. Dolly didn’t forward any ‘tales from Tasmania’ this week. However, I have pinched from my archives an ‘Apology for not attending a reunion on the Gold Coast’ you may care to read. Additionally there is a very detailed submission on DFRDB you may find very interesting. All these in the Attachment this week.

AIF bowls at Dubbo in September. We are still recruiting. Let me know if you wish to register. The 3 days cost $50 a head and includes lunch. There is an additional game on the Sunday prior to the AIF. This costs $60 a team of 3.

G’day All. Happy Mothers Day to all those Mums who have looked after our kids and their kids and of course especially to our Mums, we remember them as they are so special even though regrettably they may not be with us now. Mine certainly isn’t and I think of her often.

Sitting in the Autumn sun on the footpath outside Rockers is right up there. Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Mike Shephard, Schubes and myself turned up to chew the fat. We had 3 late withdrawals with Tom Houldsworth, John Hatchman and Kev Bock unable to attend on the day. Schubes gave all present a detailed appraisal of the status of the Reunion in Canberra in 2017. I talked about us turning 70.

There is something for everybody in the Attachment, especially if you are not politically correct. 50th wedding details and other feedback from our members, Jack Davey has been crook, Brian Gorringe is still in uniform and looking stunning at a VIP function in the Middle East, John and Luba Miscamble on their ANZAC day in Singapore, there are two articles on the submarine acquisition, both interesting and informative, plus jokes and more.

Navy play Army at Ballymore in Brisbane on the weekend of 21-22 May, will forward the details as they come to hand. Who wants to catch up there, full bar facilities and a good day. You may/will catch up with some of your mates. Jim Harris, Russ Loane and I will be at the game. Butts is a non starter this year.

G’day All. Friday at Rockers at 1200 ish. Yipee. Kev Bock is the latest who has indicated he is going to catch up. John Hatchman, Schubes, Hoges, Tom H, Shep, Spook and I are starters. Ted Hase has forwarded his apologies as he is off to the Gold Coast and Forbes. Mal Ritchie has also indicated he cannot make it. I imagine the Senator may turn up depending on his electoral and campaign duties. Should be able to spin a few warries on what did or did not happen on ANZAC Day.

Do you remember the days when to become a ‘real’ sailor, you had to be married twice, did time on the MELBOURNE and a had to have a tattoo on the bum to qualify. Well, that was not everybody’s lot, some did marry early and did it only once and some will be or have had celebrations towards their golden wedding anniversary. Congratulations to Nev and Di Thomas who celebrate the big occasion this year. Who else has reached this milestone.

Hope ANZAC Day went well for you. There are a few articles in the Attachment on how some of us spent the day. I did the Dawn Service at Dee Why then went to Avalon for the 1100 march and caught up with Graham Sloper who is the sub-branch President.

I have recently caught up with Ward Hack. Ward was a Supply Officer and one of our steppin oppos in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, he spent his ANZAC Day on the South Coast of NSW and has also added an article.

Navy play Army at Ballymore in Brisbane on the weekend of 21-22 May, will forward the details as they come to hand. Who wants to catch up there. Jim Harris, Russ Loane and I will be at the game. Butts is a non starter this year.

G’day All. Watching the Swimming Nationals and Olympic trials in Adelaide have been great. Shame to see the great man Grant Hackett bow out. What a swimming legend. Our daughter who is married to a Brazilian is doing a gig at the Marion Pool going into action each time a swimmer makes the qualifying time. She has had pics taken with Grant Hackett and Thorpy. She is chuffed. So are we.

Had a yarn with Stan Church during the week, he has just arrived home from down South. You may recall the Church’s were with us in Adelaide in October. They certainly had an extended trip away from sunny Townsville.

There is a lot in it this week’s attachment again. Hopefully you find something interesting in the read. Jim Bush who retired from DVA some years ago has forwarded an article about a benefit you may receive by turning 70. If you have qualifying service and do not have a gold card make sure you read it. I am having problems copying some of the attachments and it is fouling up the transmissions. I may have to forward individual emails as opposed to condense them into one email.

It is time to start contemplating your involvement this year with the AIF Bowls at Dubbo. Russ Loane, Barry Andrew, Mal Ritchie, Barry Andrew and I are starters. Russ and I are looking for a new Skip. Ron Pope is a possible, he is looking to fit it into his busy schedule. Hope to see the regulars and some new faces. Who else intends to attend.

Waiting on responses for those who wish to catch up at the Rockers at our next get together on Friday 6 May commencing around 1200ish. John Hatch, Schubes, Hoges, Tom H, Shep, Spook and I are starters. I imagine the Senator may turn up depending on his electoral and campaign duties. Should be able to spin a few warries on what did or did not happen on ANZAC Day, or what you thought should have happened on ANZAC Day.

Navy play Army at Ballymore in Brisbane on the weekend of 21-22 May, will forward the details as they come to hand. Who wants to catch up there. Jim Harris, Russ Loane and me have indicated we will be at the game. Butts is a non starter this year.

Canberra 2017 Anybody interested or would like to have input into this committee please contact Schubes on either his email address shoeey@tpg.com.au or telephone 0417027814 or 0262315429.

Tiny Graves Has anybody been in contact with Tiny recently. I have lost contact with him. Please ask him to contact me.

G’day All. Who had a bit of fun on April Fools Day. There were some good scams going around. Looked out the window this morning and saw a carrier going through the heads. Not sure whether it was CANBERRA coming back from Fiji after completing the Community Assist, or the ADELAIDE doing trials. Irrespective it was pretty impressive as the ship had three of her landing craft accompanying her with a helo overhead.

I had difficulty sending the attachment last week and some of the items just didn’t go through. There is a lot in it this week so hopefully the transmission will be more successful.

This week the Attachment includes some emails received from you, plus ads for DVA and other associations plus several jokes. Hope you enjoy it.

Turning 70 is not far away for some of us. Well Kevin Smith’s daughter is making positive steps to celebrate his birthday. She would like any pics you have of Smouch. Please send them to her at tamuruk@gmail.com

G’day All. Had a terrific day on Friday watching the Mons Cup at Randwick Barracks. CERBERUS beat WA in the Cup and CAIRNS beat ALBATROSS in the plate. Day started at 0900 and finished at 1600. Good quality Rugby and I expect we should do well in Brisbane in May against Army and Air Force. Some may remember Marty Grogan, he is still serving at 70 this year as the Curator of the CERBERUS Museum, his son Darren is the new Director of Rugby.

He intends catching up at the Rockers at our next get together on Friday 6 May commencing around 1200ish. Should be able to spin a few warries on what happened on ANZAC Day, or what you thought happened on ANZAC Day.

Look at the Attachment. There is link to an ebook written by Harry Harkness. Harry is effectively a generation in front of us. I think a lot of us can relate to the contents of his book. Have a look and see what you think. There’s lots more to read and digest. Enjoy.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 28 February 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Tom and Val Houldsworth, Sandy and Rhonda Michels and myself travelled to CRESWELL SS Mess to donate the plaque to accompany the Brent Balchin poster of the MELBOURNE – VOYAGER collision. We had a great night, met up with old mates from the Mess and past ships, donated the plaque, had a great meal as a guest of the President and Committee and cemented further friendships. Some of us also won raffle prizes. Really good night.

Our next get together is Friday 6 May at the Rockers commencing around 1200ish.

Approval has been officially received for the retention of the JR Memorial at LEEUWIN as a caveat of the sale. I am very happy to report this. Saying this, there is scuttlebutt about in respect to the value of the JR Memorial. Questions are being asked of its relevance. What does it mean? Who and what does it represent are questions asked. Does it have military significance as it was a Training Establishment. Did any JR’s participate in any war. Why don’t we give war ships, who participate in Areas of Operation and conflicts similar recognition. You can see the gist of the conversation. These questions are irrelevant to the purpose of the JRM. It was an opportunity to celebrate and honour the role of JR’s who contributed their service to the nation and the RAN. What a fine body of men they became. I speak in broad terms here.

We all know Ken Dobbie led us as ex JR’s to have this Memorial erected. It wasn’t done for the 6th and 7th, it was done for all JR’s. The opportunity to celebrate the 1st intakes 50th anniversary was an opportunity not to be missed. Ken did a sterling job; all aspects of the Memorial ceremony were a resounding success. My opinion is these people who are criticizing are doing so as they had no input and no ideas. They are just plain jealous of the achievement.

Butts (Wayne and Margaret Butterfield) are on the move, they will be travelling OS to Portugal, Scandavia and then to London to see their daughter. Sounds like a top trip. Fred Howes, Scarcey and Smithy (all attended the Adelaide reunion) are having a fat time in the SA Gulf area fishing for King George Whiting. Have a look at the pic and other articles in the Attachment. Eg how is Reg Turnbull faring in the wild Australian outback.

Remember Navy play Army at Ballymore in Brisbane on the weekend of 21-22 May, will forward the details as they come to hand. Who wants to catch up there. Don’t forget our September AIF Bowls in Dubbo.

Please let me know if you can attend; you will need positive ID to enter CRESWELL. 1800ish Neat Casual.

Have not received any articles from people travelling for some time. Have all your pensions dried up or saving to join the grey nomads in the distant future. I intend travelling through Queensland in June and staying at Kurrimine Beach during August and September. Am hoping to catch up with as many as possible of our group. I haven’t told them yet but Doug Wilson, Russ Loane, Danny Tiley and those living in FNQ are on my hit list. Remember Navy play Army at Ballymore in Brisbane on the weekend of 21-22 May, will forward the details as they come to hand. Who wants to catch up there. Don’t forget our September AIF Bowls in Dubbo. We will also have a get together at the Rockers on Friday 6 May commencing at 1200. Start diarising these dates and see whether it suits you to attend.

The articles in the Attachment this week are topical and the jokes pretty good. Have a gander.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 14 February 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Tom Houldsworth led another successful commemoration ceremony at Husky on Wednesday evening. I think it was the biggest turnout for some years standfast the 50th anniversary. CRESWELL provided a Padre who controlled the ceremony and there were also 3 sailors from CRESWELL in uniform. A local radio station personality was also in attendance and intends to be there next year.

For our part, we were the majority of the attendees, the starters were Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Rod Hazell, Marian and Schubes Schubert, Barry and Margaret Parker, Mike and Jean Shephard , Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Ken and Myra Scarisbrick, Clarry and Dawn Shaw, Sandy and Jan Powell, John Tant, Mick Gallagher and Moot Sutton.

We all had a top time on Wednesday at the dinner and then again met up on Thursday morning for breakfast, the weather was tops. It did not rain. I always think I should spend a week or two there as it is one of the best holiday areas in Australia. Put it in your calendar for next year. I know some have.

Apologies received were from Bob and Pat Stupple, Barry and KayMarie Andrew, Jock McGregor, Phil and Joan Clements, Bristles and Lou Lassau, Max Hart and Tom Kinross.

The Friday night function at CRESWELL SS Mess to donate the plaque to accompany the Brent Balchin poster of the MELBOURNE – VOYAGER collision has been postponed until Friday 26 February. We needs some support and company. Enjoy a good night out with the presentation, dinner and the raffles. Please let me know if you can attend; you will need positive ID to enter CRESWELL. 1800ish Neat Casual.

I know there are some Warrior Writers out there and others who wanted to be Warrior Writers who remember or wished the workings in the Pay Office during the weeks/months prior to Feb 66 having to guess what the equivalent of Dollars was to LSD. I did it in MELBOURNE Pay Office. Well it is 50 years since we changed over from LSD to dollars. Time flies.

The articles in the Attachment this week still lean to the Australian of the Year debacle and jokes. However, Max Hart sent me an email indicating he would like to attend the February 10 commemoration ceremony next year. What he said is worth publishing, his missus is another legend.

Canberra 2017 The initial committee meeting for the Canberra reunion was held last week at Husky Pub. Marian and Schubes will be pushing out an article on the results. Anybody interested or would like to have input into this committee please contact Schubes on either his email address shoeey@tpg.com.au or telephone 0417027814 or 0262315429.

G’day All. Talked to Sandy Powell and Doug Wilson during the week. Unfortunately Jan is not travelling as well as she should. On behalf of all of us we wish her all the best of health. Doug and Trish are doing the Irish trip later in the year, partly to celebrate Dougs 70th; lucky buggers they will have a great time

This Friday Tom and Val Houldsworth are travelling to CRESWELL SS Mess to donate the plaque to accompany the Brent Balchin poster of the MELBOURNE – VOYAGER collision. They needs some support and company. Enjoy a good night out with the presentation, dinner and the raffles. Please let me know if you can attend; you will need positive ID to enter CRESWELL. 1800ish Neat Casual.

I must admit I am happy the heat is still on the Australian of the Year recipient. I think he sold the Army out similar to how the Chief of Navy at the time sold Navy out. CDRE Bruce Kafer the Commandant of ADFA was a real loser. It all goes back to Defence Minister Stephen Smith and his wish to bring Defence to heel. (He was the worst Defence Minister ever and his legacy is going to last for a long time)

Somebody had to select an Australian of the Year. Who were they and what was their agenda you ask. Well I do anyway. Should the committee that elected him be accountable. Maybe the concept should be dropped completely. I have a theory, no proof though, that the President of the AOTY Committee’s father may have had some influence.

Kev Smith and Rob Cavanagh have an opinion on the AOTY. Dolly Gray is still living and writing in the lsland down under the Island/Continent down under. The ADF’s attitude towards Islam and other articles to entertain you are in the Enclosure.

The starters who have confirmed for Tuesday night are Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Rod Hazell, Bob and Pat Stupple, Marian and Schubes Schubert, Barry and Margaret Parker, Mike and Jean Shephard , Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Ken and Myra Scarisbrick, Clarry Shaw, Sandy and Jan Powell, John Tant and Moot Sutton. As usual Tom H will lead us. Apologies received so far are Barry and KayMarie Andrew, Jock McGregor, Phil and Joan Clements, Tom Kinross. The Shepherds and Schuberts will not be able to make the Friday night bash at CRESWELL SS Mess.

Canberra 2017 The initial committee meeting for the Canberra reunion will be held commencing 1100 on Wednesday 10 Feb at the Husky Pub. We are looking for Canberra based people to make up our committee to assist in the Canberra 2017 reunion. Anybody interested or would like to have input into this committee please contact Schubes on either his email address shoeey@tpg.com.au or telephones 0417027814 or 0262315429. Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 31 January 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Caught up with Danny Tiley last week at his home and shed. There are a few pics in our Facebook account. Danny looks well and is having playing with his model trains.

Jan and Sandy Powell are very proud parents with their son Craig receiving his Australia Day honour. Captain Craig Anthony POWELL RAN, NSW
For distinguished performance of duties in warlike operations as the Director of Operations, Combined Maritime Forces, Maritime Operations Advisor, Joint Task Force 633 on Operation SLIPPER from 3 December 2013 to 30 June 2014.
Captain Powell is a superior, diplomatic officer whose distinguished performance directly promoted Australia's maritime security interests in the Middle East Region. His ability to prioritise a multitude of disparate demands and to provide timely and accurate advice under pressure, ensured that the Combined Maritime Forces achieved significant operational results. His achievements are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Defence Force

That’s the good news about Australia Day honours. It would appear to me the Australia Day Honours Council have quite a bit to answer for re the nominations. The Queensland nomination and the final winner is a complete farce. There a few articles in the Attachment to substantiate this claim. My observations during the last few years lead me to believe Navy has as many problems or more with our Chief’s as both the Army and the RAAF. They haven’t displayed positive leadership and are a disgrace. There are several articles in the Attachment in respect of the Australian of the Year candidates. Good read.

G’day All. We are in Drilham Central West Queensland for a few days. Not far from where Danny Tiley lives, so hoping to catch up. No internet connection so this will be a little late.

The numbers are still growing for Husky. Sandy Powell was talking to his mate Clarrie Shaw who was an ABQMG on MELBOURNE in 64. I remember Clarrie, he worked as Bosuns Party. You may remember the banana beds we used on the Focsle when we were in the tropics. I think we could store them in the Bosuns Locker.

The starters who have confirmed for Tuesday night are Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Rod Hazell, Bob and Pat Stupple, Marian and Schubes Schubert, Barry and Margaret Parker, Mike and Jean Shephard , Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Ken and Myra Scarisbrick, Clarry Shaw and Sandy and Jan Powell. We will get a big turn out here. As usual Tom H will lead us.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 17 January 2016
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Our numbers are building for February. Tom H has been in contact with ‘The survivors of VOYAGER’; they will be in attendance at Husky and will lead the service at the old Memorial.

Please let me know if you are attending. We may need to book tables for dinner on the 10th. Additionally, the inaugural committee meeting for the Canberra reunion will be held. The starters who have confirmed are Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Rod Hazell, Bob and Pat Stupple, Marian and Schubes Schubert, Barry and Margaret Parker, Mike and Jean Shephard , Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Russ and Georgina Nelson and Sandy and Jan Powell. We will get a big turn out here. As usual Tom H will lead us.

Schubes is out of hospital. He has indicated he still intends to attend the Husky function. I fell foul of Shingles on the port side of my dial during the week, what a bummer of a disease that is. Painful. For those that have been blessed with having contracted chicken pox earlier in your live, there is an injection you can receive to minimise the adverse effects. While talking about SBJ’s. Annie Oakley is a real trojan, he has a boil which cannot be lanced at the base of his back which is quite debilitating. This doesn’t stop him from volunteering his time by running the raffles and also sausage sizzles for the RSL movement 2 or 3 times a week. Well done Annie.

Dolly’s running rampart, another article this week. Glen Summerhayes would like to thank all those who helped him with info on Paul Rattray. Jim Hammond has his say on ‘abuse in LEEUWIN’. Mal Ritchie is reading a book on the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE collision and Rocky Freier forwarded an account of the SAR’s out of CRESWELL participation of the same incident. Good reads.

Been on the phone with Schubes today, he has been admitted to Canberra Hospital with a mild stroke. Our best wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

Dolly’s first article has arrived and he is back in 2016. Does anybody else want to contribute. Tony Gysen has promised, he has delivered on one occasion, I am looking forward to some more. There is a fantastic utube link on HMAS SHROPSHIRE. Can tell you not a lot changed between the end of WW2 and we first went to sea.

Tom Houldsworth has produced a plaque to finish off the Brent Balchin poster which we framed and was presented to the Senior Sailors Mess at CRESWELL. A pic is in the enclosure.

This year ‘the birthday list’ is moving and improving, it is going to be included in the Attachment. As mentioned last week I now have everybody’s birthdate. Additional to the birthdays will be the email address of the birthday boy, that is of course if I have it. Unlike LEEUWIN when you clicked your heels, here you just click on the email address and contact your mate. If you don’t want your email address published, please let me know.

Thanks to those who responded about Paul Rattray. Everything forwarded to me has been forwarded to Glenn Summerhayes.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 3 January 2016

G’day All. We had coffee with Knocker and Marilyn Whyte during the week. They have spent the Christmas with their son Aaron and his family in Sydney and have now returned to Nowra for a few days before heading north again towards the Glasshouse Mountains.

I missed two important items in my yearly summary last week, one was our get together in Brisbane for the Interservice Rugby in May and importantly Terry Dack was awarded the Butch Cousins donated Shield for JR of the Year for our intakes.

Is anybody else watching the Big Bash. I admit, I thought I would never like the razzle dazzle loud form of cricket. I started watching it this year, its fantastic. Thursday and Friday night, the home teams were outright underdogs and both got up in exciting finishes. Then Saturday night nearly 81000 spectators. Lots of fun. If you don’t like all the commentators (I cant handle the mouthy Pom) turn the volume down, well worth the watch.

Put 10 February in your calendar if you want to attend the ceremony at Huskisson. Additionally, the inaugural committee meeting for the Canberra reunion will be held. The starters who have confirmed are Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Rod Hazell, Bob and Pat Stupple, Marian and Schubes Schubert, Barry and Margaret Parker, Mike and Jean Shephard and Sandy and Rhonda Michels. We will get a big turn out here. Tom Houldsworth will lead us.
Who remembers Paul Ratray

Glenn Summerhayes is making enquiries, can you help please?

I believe Paul Ratray is deceased but I would like some details if available.

We went to School together in the Mid 50’s, I caught up with him at Leeuwin in July 1963.

Could you ask our fellow JRTE Members if they could provide me with any details? I hope to revisit Tasmania again in the future and would love to catch up with his family.

My Best Wishes to All – let’s hope 2016 will be better for us all.
