HMAS LEEUWIN 6th & 7th Intake - Bereavement

Adelaide Reunion October 2015

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 29 December 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm
G’day All. Another year gone and we are still here to celebrate the New Year. Bloody Beudy, I reckon.
During 2019 we were all saddened to hear we lost some of our members Ken Fielding, Dizzie Gillespie and Don Muller. All outstanding personalities in their own right, all going too early. We will remember them.
As you are aware we, that is previous recipients, nominate one of our members to be the 1963 EXJR of the year. This year we had 4 candidates nominated. Of these 4 three of them received major votes, however, despite not publishing the pics he has taken in the past Mick Gallagher has been forgiven and is our man. Mick has contributed greatly to our group, we used his band at the Gold Coast, he acquired the Ships Log which we use to record who attended our functions and get togethers, he has attended all functions when he is well, is very proactive in our Dedication Plaque process and actively promotes our group wherever and whenever he can. Mick is a worthy recipient of our award. Congratulations Mick.
There is an article about the bushfires and amongst other things how the duration of the extended season affect the firefighters lives. I wonder why ADF members, particularly Sailors cannot be deployed to assist in bushfires. We train nearly every day when we are at sea. Surely that skill could be transferred to another environment.
Our next function/get together occurs on 10 February in Huskisson for the commemoration of the loss of the sailors in VOYAGER. Starters so far, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug and Trish Wilson, Sandy Powell (who has offered me accommodation), John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jill Hogan, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Bongo and Jo DiBetta, Ted and Fiona Hase, Moot Sutton plus me. How could you not attend and miss this mob? Maybe Mick G may put his name down early. Please let me know if you are going.
I have forwarded the surveys minus the names to Ken Railton for assessment. I am still happy to onforward those that are still in the process of completion and have asked for a little time to finish.
Have written to the Australian National Maritime Museum about giving us permission to lay a wreath on VAMPIRE on Remembrance Day, but have not received a response to date.
Kaye Slotboom is interested in collecting data for anybody who is suffering from Asbestosis. You may contact her on kaye.slotboom@icloud.com
If you want a polo shirt, sizes S, XL and XXL these sizes are available. We also have more caps with the LEEUWIN larikan design. All the gear is at cost price and our group is paying the postage and packaging. Shirts are $30, caps are $15. Please contact me if you have ordered and not received.
Face Book – Our FB Page has been updated. Pics of Jeff and Jenny Wake at a Remembrance Day ceremony in Fremantle. G’day All. I have been having a meltdown with my address book, it currently reflects a very old version, which from my point of view is better than the first iteration I had tonight which showed nothing. Will seek professional advice.

Very happy to report ‘what ship and submarine’ was that, caused some interest.

I received my package from DVA during the week. It contained a letter, the Covenant and a pin. I trust all those that did apply will receive the same service.

Our next function/get together occurs on 10 February in Huskisson for the commemoration of the loss of the sailors in VOYAGER. Have had a few confirmations, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug Wilson (not sure about Trish at this stage), Sandy Powell (who has offered me accommodation), John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jill Hogan, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Bongo and Jo DiBetta plus me. How could you not attend and miss this mob? Please let me know if you are going.

Will be forwarding the surveys to Ken Railton in the next few weeks, just waiting on those that have asked for a little time to finish. Received another 3 this last week.

G’day All. We are on our way to Melbourne for the next two weeks to help out with the Grand kids competing in figure skating. Anybody about that wants to share a coffee or a beer, please give me a yell.
Have written to the Australian National Maritime Museum but have not received a response to date. Mal Ritchie has indicated he would make the trip up from Goulburn for the day if we were allowed to place a wreath on VAMPIRE.
Has anybody heard of Steve Hinch lately, his email address did not respond last week.
Our next function/get together occurs on 10 February in Huskisson for the commemoration of the loss of the sailors in VOYAGER. Have had a few confirmations, Rob and Sandra Cavanagh, Russ Loane, Doug Wilson (not sure about Trish at this stage), Sandy Powell (who has offered me accommodation), John and Lyn Hatchman, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Spook, Mike and Jill Hogan, Mike and Jean Shephard, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Schubes and Marian, plus me. Does anybody want to include their experiences of Garden Island or Rottnest Island in their survey. One of our group pointed out how I missed these important events in our time. Bloody Coxswain!! Lol. This past week have received another 4 responses (including a response indicating he did not want to complete the survey) making (65 of 246) so far with another three promised. Will be forwarding to Ken at the end of this month. If you don’t want to fill out the survey could you please tell me as that is a legitimate decision and an important part of a survey. There have been 5 responses forwarded from intakes other that 6 & 7. I have now received two notices indicating an unwillingness to complete the survey. Have received quite a few where all the questions were not addressed. Please fill in what you are comfortable with, or simply say you don’t wish to fill out the survey. Any response at all helps with the sample.
If you have a spare hour, who doesn’t at our age. Fill in a couple of questions at a time, if you are not comfortable with a question just ignore it, maybe put in another question and respond to your own question. When you are happy, then forward it. Your names will not be included with your response. How to respond, just hit reply to sender and fill in the spaces, then hit forward.

G’day All. Posted some pics of all that attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Australian National Maritime Museum. We had a great day, of the five of us, none had served in VAMPIRE. You may have noticed on our FB page how the wreaths were placed onboard KRAIT. Which was great. Notwithstanding, I intend to write to the Museum to see whether they would allow us to place a wreath on VAMPIRE in honour of all the sailors who served. Will keep you updated.

I applied for my pin and copy of the Covenant from DVA as discussed last week, to date, I have not received either.

Our next function/get together occurs on 10 February in Huskisson for the commemoration of the loss of the sailors in VOYAGER. G’day All. Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, we will be assembling at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour. Similar routine to the previous years, arrive before 1045, find a seat if you are early enough, participate in the dedication ceremony, have morning tea with the Commandos and others then proceed to the pub for lunch. Rob Cavanagh, Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, John Hatchman and myself are current starters. Gary Angel was on the way down from Port Macquarie but a bushfire or two has got in his way. Hopefully the fires can be controlled.
Went to the DY RSL Sub Branch meeting on Wednesday night. The new card was explained to me. The easiest way to get connected is to go to your MyGov account and link DVA with it. This will access the pin and the Covenant. Discounts are available through Australian Partners of Defence (APOD), might be of interest.
Does anybody need another copy of the Survey. This past week have received another 7 responses making 51 so far. Will be forwarding to Ken at the end of this month. Was watching the news tonight and noticed Warren Chester advertising the new Defence card and some of the discounts we will all get. Like last week there are plenty of interesting articles in the Attachment. An update on the DFRDB Commutation petition; drones providing logistic support to a US Submarine; Victorian RSL update, ADF in disgrace; Operation Assist medal application and a couple of jokes to reset the mood.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. There has been a lot happening in Defence and ex Defence this week in the tabloids. In the attachment there is a great result for Submariners, in my opinion well deserved and about time. Additionally, Australian Veterans have been recognised which could benefit you. You can also compare the salary you received to what came into effect on 1 Nov 2018 plus our Admirals and Generals may now receive a further promotion to 4 star in line with other nations. I wonder whether that would make our military leaders a more political animal.

Ken Scarisbrick and Glen Summerhayes have moved, Ken has moved to the Sunshine Coast town of Mapleton (0428280306) and Glen has moved to the town of Hill Top in NSW.

Bev and I went to the Newington Armory today. Well worth having a look at if you are around Sydney. There is a pic of me in our FB page next to an Ikara missile.

The Rugby World Cup is still full of surprises. I know what you are thinking, ‘who cares’ the Wallabies are back in Australia with their collective tails between their legs talking up excuses why their performance was so poor. Where is ‘running rugby?’. Dead and buried in this World Cup. Talking rugby, the RAN is not holding the Mons Cup this year. Very disappointing.

Thanks to all who have responsed to the survey. If you don’t want to fill out the survey could you please tell me as that is a legitimate decision and an important part of a survey. Have received another 4 responses this week. There has been 5 responses forwarded from intakes other that 6 & 7. I have only received one notice indicating that the individual did not want to complete the survey. Surprisingly no surveys indicating mistreatment or bastardisation when serving in LEEUWIN have appeared. I say surprisingly as I do know there are several of our group who didn’t enjoy LEEUWIN. Have received quite a few where all the questions were not addressed. Please fill in what you are comfortable with, or simply say you don’t wish to fill out the survey. Any response at all helps with the sample.

John Hatchman spoke brilliantly on Ken's life from 1963. The ceremony had a lot of pomp and ceremony as there was an Official Catafalque Party which presented the White Ensign to the Padre to be placed on the altar during the ceremony. There were 4 musicians and a singer provided also. Great service conducted by Principal Chaplain Clayton. Pics are contained in our Face Book Page, The second pic is a selfie of the party at Rocker's having lunch on completion of the morning tea provided by FNSA.
Marilyn mentioned this afternoon, that Ken or her didn’t have a will when KI passed away. Do you have a current will? I don’t, so must get onto it, maybe those that don’t have one should do the same.
Talking to those who attended today’s Dedication about future Wakes/major functions, Tasmania was the preferred location. This follows on from the Darwin Wake.
So…….calling for volunteers from Tasmania to run a function in Tasmania in 2021. We have 5 from our group who still live in Tassy. I will help.
Thanks to all who have responsed to the survey. Have received 39 responses so far. 5 of those have come from intakes other that 6 & 7.
If you have a spare hour, who doesn’t at our age. Fill in a couple of questions at a time, if you are not comfortable with a question just ignore it, maybe put in another question and respond to your own question. When you are happy, then forward it. Your names will not be included with your response. How to respond, just hit reply to sender and fill in the spaces, then his forward.
11 November is Remembrance Day, we will be assembling at the Australian Maritime Museum. Please let me know if you intend to show up. Similar routine to the previous years, arrive before 1045, find a seat if you are early enough, participate in the dedication ceremony, have morning tea with the Commandos and others then proceed to the pub for lunch. Rob Cavanagh, Spook Cairns and myself are current starters. If you want to run an assembly in a city near you send me an email and I will advertise.

G’day All. Back in Sydney. You may not be aware but when we had the 2017 function in Canberra we had an auction on some of Brent Balchin’s brilliant work. Well Quigs was the highest bidder for the top item, then, embarrassment for me as I couldn’t find the print. Checked everywhere twice, apologized to Quigs and Alice and just hoped it would turn up. Well, in Darwin last month I conceded that it was lost. On arrival in Sydney last Tuesday the bloody thing was on top of my desk. Bev found it and didn’t realise I was looking for it!!! Great result.
I have contacted The Command Chaplain to confirm Ken Fielding’s Dedication and have received an iron clad statement that the Dedication Service will be conducted on Sunday 20 October. My number is 0410529797. I will need to know by PM Monday 14 October if you wish to attend.
We had a discussion on future ‘Wakes/Major Functions’, the consensus was we would like to have a function in either Tasmania, Sunshine Coast/Bribie Island and the Gold Coast. The first choice was Tasmania, however, there were no Tasmanians in our group who could run with the function. So…….calling for volunteers from Tasmania to run a function in Tasmania in 2021. We have 5 from our group who still live in Tassy. I will help. Have made one call to a tourist Tasmanian and am awaiting reply.
In the September Reveille ‘Last Post’ there is a name R.B. LEWIN R51343. Would this be Zeke, our ABCD Instructor. What a good bloke he was. He had a marvelous outlook on life and was one of those blokes who really prepared us for the Fleet.
Talking about ‘Reville’, I note that Ray ‘Jessie’ James is the current Acting President of NSW RSL. Jess was an EXJR, played Rugby, yes I know he was a Stoker. He should have been a Writer. I wish him every success in this high profile position.
Talking Rugby, one of the blokes who had a huge effect on the quality of Navy Rugby passed away this last week. Jeff Sayle ‘the Snail’ was a Wallaby, coached KUTTABUL, Navy, NSW Waratahs and later Army when Navy lost its way. He tried to attend every Interservice Carnival and enjoyed himself by being there. He was an inspiration to many sailors, he was so constructive and positive, always offering advice if it was asked and was a social genius. Sailors put him to bed on many a night after we were poured out of the Randwick Rugby Club and delivered him to his wife around 3 or 4 AM. RIP Snail you were the Legend’s legend.
The responses to the survey are still coming in. I will be forwarding out the same survey in a couple of weeks, trying to get a better sample. If you have a spare hour, who doesn’t at our age. Fill in a couple of questions at a time, if you are not comfortable with a question just ignore it, maybe put in another question and respond to your own question. When you are happy, then forward it. There have been some very interesting responses. Your names will not be included with your response. How to do it, just hit reply to sender and fill in the spaces.

G’day All. What a week in SA we have had, chasing kids to sports from dawn to dusk and late dusk during their school holidays, caught up with Fred Howes at Wallaroo, daylight saving is with us again (beauty) and am currently enroute to Sydney, spending the night in Hay.
Most importantly, I contacted The Command Chaplain last week to confirm Ken Fielding’s Dedication and despite early confirmation I have not received an iron clad statement. I am hoping to do that tomorrow. Please continue with your current arrangements. This is hopefully only a hiccup in their system. My number is 0410529797.

G’day All. Russ Loane and I parted ways on Thursday after three really enjoyable weeks on the road which started at Kurrimine Beach, took in the Darwin functions then through Central Australia to Adelaide. I am looking forward to our next adventure.
Shep’s addition to the Attachment this week is quite interesting. He has a copy of his and two others statements on the MELBOURNE/VOYAGER incident. Maybe you would like to see what you wrote!!!
Jeff Wake would like to promote the ‘All LEEUWIN’ function in the West next year. It has been advertised a few times through this medium and is linked to the Tingira website. Do you intend being there for the 60th Anniversary of JRTE. In 2010 is was great. Of course then we had the unveiling of the Memorial to JRTE which was led by Ken Dobbie.

G’day All. The Mayor of Darwin (Jeff Dunn) and his wife Kaye have shown us what Darwin is all about, we visited the famous Mindil Markets on Thursday as a preliminary get together, had our Meet and Greet on the lawns of the NT Parliament House in glorious conditions with two Territorians as guest speakers, then on Saturday night at the Novotel, food was magnificent and the CO of HMAS COONAWARRA CMDR Graham Rushworth entertained all with his wit and knowledge, followed by Sunday at the Darwin Military Museum (Jeff as President for 17 years) where we had the top guide giving us the history of the military in the Top End. Fantastic way to finish off a brilliant weekend.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 18 August 2019

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Wally and Robyn Gawne popped in today on their way south; we had some lunch together in Kurrimine Beach. Took a pic, will put in on FB when I work out how to pair my phone with my new computer.

Have now heard from Perry and Merja Whitehouse, so now the Darwin connection is established and ready to go.

Had no comment on the Olongapo articles, I thought they were great, I recognized the bridge but couldn’t find the bar Warwick Burns and myself thought we were stars singing on the stage. (It was late and we were only 17)

The programme for Darwin is

Thursday 12th

Mindil Markets 1700 – 1930. Informal night at Mindil Markets – a renowned tourist attraction and a great way to enjoy the multi cultural aspects of Darwin, great food & gorgeous sunsets. Pay as you go.

Friday 13th Meet & Greet

Parliament House, Speakers Green 1730 – 1930. Overlooking the Harbour on the Esplanade in CBD.

Cost: $55 all inclusive based on 50 attending (food should be sufficient for main meal and venue is easy walking from most places in CBD so no further costs). Security applies at entrance. Some seating available and wheelchair access.

Saturday 14th Dinner

Novotel on the Esplanade 1830onwards

Cost: $92.00 per person which includes 3 course meal and 2 hr drink package.

Sunday 15th Wind-up brunch/lunch

Darwin Military Museum, East Point

Cost: $20 per person includes $12 entry fee (normally $20.00) and BBQ Lunch.

Any questions email me at; jkdunn4@bigpond.com

Hope those that attended Vietnam Veterans Day had a memorable day. I had family coming up from Adelaide so couldn’t commit to a ceremony.

Have a look at the questionnaire on LEEUWIN in the Attachment, answer if you like, respond to questions you are comfortable with, ignore those you are not.

I have received notification from the Command Chaplain, there will be one more Dedication Ceremonies this year in October. Ken Fielding’s Dedication Plaque has been accepted and the date is set. Put 20 October 2019 in your diary. John Hatchman will be talking on behalf of Ken. If you have anything to offer please contact him on john.hatchman@hotmail.com

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 11 August 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Wally and Robyn Gawne have had some bad luck with their caravan, they are in Cairns but need to return south to get some warranty work done on it and can no longer make Darwin. Haven’t heard anymore from Perry Whitehouse. Please let Jeff Dunn and me know if you are a starter. jkdunn4@bigpond.com
Have been in contact with Ken Railton re his idea on producing bios for our group and any others from other groups that spent their recruit training at LEEUWIN.
I have put together a few questions, have a look at them, if you are happy respond, add or delete any topic you wish either at LEEUWIN or post LEEUWIN or where you have been since Navy and/or where you are now.

Why did you join the Navy

What did you expect to get out of LEEUWIN

Did you enjoy your 1st three months at LEEUWIN, when did it dawn on you that you were in the RAN for 12 years not 12 minutes and how did you react.

What was your favourite activity Eating chicken Maryland – going around for seconds

How beneficial was the additional education we received in later life. Do you think it helped in your career?

Did you enjoy the navigation classes, how about the speed reading sessions.

Did you enjoy the other Instruction at the school like English Maths and Physics. Ken Railton look out

What didn’t you like about the routines. Getting up at dawn perhaps or no leave for the first 6 weeks

Did you like compulsory church, remember the milkshakes at the local cafe or Seamans Mission

Did you at anytime think of discharging when at LEEUWIN

When did you decide on what category you wished to pursue. Did you get allocated this category

Did you enjoy the Friday night dances

Did you enjoy the sports and the bloody compulsory cross country.

Did you enjoy the seamanship and ABCD

Did you mind wearing pussers clothes that didn’t necessarily fit.

Did you like doing your own dhobying and ironing. Spit polishing your boots.

Did LEEUWIN practices alter your personality and help you mature.

Did you leave LEEUWIN in a better frame of mind than when you joined

Would you like your time again in LEEUWIN

Do you think LEEUWIN served its purpose in readying you for the fleet.
Are you involved in any Service Organisation now

I think all of us recall Ken Railton. He has been to a few of our functions. He was the President of the QLD Branch of the DFWA amongst other things, possibly your Divisional Officer, taught at LEEUWIN when we were there, coached the rowing team and represented Australia in rowing at the Commonwealth Games in Wales. Ken is suggesting we have a brag book. Look in the attachment and you will see what it is all about. He majority of us are retired now and should be able to spend an hour or two putting it together. Don’t forget your kids will thank you for it.

Spoke to Mike Hogan during the week, he is enduring a 6 week hospital/medical package. Three weeks into it. He doesn’t recommend going there. All the best mate.

Spoke to James Carroll during the week, Don Muller and for those who remember Barry Clements (Writer) have their names in the RIP pages of the Queensland RSL magazine.

There is a major push on investigations the reasons for Veteran Suicide, consequently the petition is in the Attachment. I have had personal experience on numerous occasions in investigating suicides. It is always very sad and generally the suicide is for very petty reasons.

G’day All. Met up with Russ Loane and Marty Grogan onboard SUCCESS last Monday evening in Cairns. They spent two days onboard, transiting to Brisbane, they did a final RAS with FFG’s MELBOURNE and NEWCASTLE outside of Cairns, must have been a lot of fun. Marty’s son Darren is the paying off CO of SUCCESS. Of all the CO’s on SUCCESS the only two who have passed on are the two I served with, Graham Sloper and Dave Ramsay. Also in Cairns was the NEWCASTLE, she pays off this year also, so the last two ships I served in are off to the block for razor blades. No wonder we are called ‘old farts’.

Annie Oakley came down to Kurrimine from Cairns this week to say G’day, great to see him and he is looking well. Sandy and Rhonda Michels have moved to Mareeba for the winter. James Carroll who is the Vice President of the Atherton Sub Branch tells me the new club will be opened this year, possibly in October.

Would like to know whether anybody would be interested in catching up at Woree on Thursday 27 June for lunch. Please respond, if you want to be a starter.

G’day All. I am at Kurrimine Beach FNQ, arrived last Wednesday, on the way I caught up with Jaffa Robinson and PeeWee Petherick. If you are in the area please let me know, would love to catch up and have a cup of coffee. Those not in the area should note, that it has been raining in this area since January. There has only been one period where it hasn’t rained in a week this year, yet they have received less rain than normal years.

For those that are interested Rocky, his mate John and I had a very successful fishing expedition out of Bribie Island on Monday. Was a great day and plenty of fish.

Hopefully can catch up with all our group that live in the area soon.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 19 May 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. I am very happy to report Karl Slotboom’s Dedication Service was conducted today at the GI Chapel. Spook Cairns spoke on our behalf on Karl. His wife Kaye and children and grandchildren attended the service. His eulogy is contained in the Attachment. It should be noted that the family pic was taken with BRISBANE in the background.

Spook was telling me that birthday boy Mike Aylmer, Karl and himself shared a common interest whilst they were serving at LEEUWIN. Good dit.

Caught up with Marion and Schubes on Friday afternoon at their house, stayed overnight then Schubes and I watched the Navy Army Rugby inter service game on Saturday afternoon. Had the best day ever, Navy smacked Army 30 -20, Navy were never headed, was a great game and hopefully next year we can get more people to the ground to support Navy.

I am currently in Forster for the Matelot Bowls competition. Only 14 competitors this year, so we need more starters. It is a great 4 days bowls and an opportunity to catch up with your mates.

Barry Andrew forwarded the article on the EVANS/MELBOURNE Commemoration Service. I know there were several of our group involved in that incident who were serving in MELBOURNE at that time. Remember Barry and I think Rod Hazell was onboard. I think there was more of us. Do you know whether anybody else there. There were 130 plus blokes who were on MELBOURNE at the time in June 69 who were either on MELBOURNE in Feb 64 or on VOYAGER at the time of the VOYAGER/MELBOURNE incident. Would have loved to be at the 50th ceremony but I will be in FNQ.

If you are in contact with mates who have a naval background please send me pics so I can publish on our FB page.

Details of the events and starters plus possibles for Darwin for this year’s ‘Wake”, are now contained in our website. Just click on www.mrsite.co.uk/usersitesv26/HMAS-Leeuwin-1963.com/wwwroot/page9.htm

Please let Jeff Dunn and me know if you are a starter.

The AIF Bowls in Dubbo in September are being advertised. I will not be attending this year as it is too close to our function in Darwin and I will be in FNQ. If anybody wants the details please let me know.

G’day All. Karl Slotboom’s Dedication Service is scheduled for Sunday 19 May, Kay has negotiated with the Command Chaplain and the Dedication Service will commence at 1000. Kay has a party of 15 attending the service, we are being represented by Spook who will produce a eulogy about Karl. Please let me know by email if you intend to attend. I am happy to send your names to the Command Chaplain to gain access to GI.

It was great to meet up with Schubes this afternoon at the Navy Rugby game in Canberra when they played RAAF. Final score Navy 66 RAAF 7. Met lots of other Rugby heads there including Billy Stokes, he was a 1st intake from CERBERUS and a PT in our time. Have been speaking with Spook Cairns during the week, his health is improving, also been in contact with Doug Wilson, he is laid up in bed with a knee problem but with so much time on his hand he will probably send the TAB broke.

If you are in contact with mates who have a naval connection please send me pics so I can publish on our FB page.

Details of the events and starters plus possibles for Darwin for this year’s ‘Wake”, are now contained in our website. Just click on www.mrsite.co.uk/usersitesv26/HMAS-Leeuwin-1963.com/wwwroot/page9.htm

Please let Jeff Dunn and me know if you are a starter.

Navy played RAAF Interservice Rugby today at Vikings, Erindale, Canberra. The Navy/Army game is scheduled for next Saturday 18 May commencing at 1330 for women then men at 1530 (tentatively) Gungahlin Eagles home ground, not Duntroon. I intend going to both the RAAF and Army games. Hope to see you there.

The Matelot Bowls will be held at Forster commencing Monday 20 May though encouraging people to be there by Saturday 18 May to establish a social scene. If anybody need the official notice from the Secretary please let me know and I will forward. This is a really good function to attend if you are a bowler. If you need a lift from Sydney to Forster on Sunday 19 May I can take you, however, I will not be returning to Sydney.

The AIF Bowls in Dubbo in September are being advertised. I will not be attending this year as it is too close to our function in Darwin and I will be in FNQ. If anybody wants the details please let me know.

G’day All. Happy Easter everybody, hope you all had a happy and safe time over the big weekend. Time to prepare for Thursday’s services. I am blessed at Dee Why as we have a fabulous location for the Dawn Service. Sun rising over the sea, surf pounding on the beach and the birds screeching. It is just brilliant. I will be flying to Japan with my Grandson Lucas for his Ice Hockey competition on Thursday evening, returning in a fortnight.

Karl Slotboom’s Dedication Service is scheduled for 19 May 2019. Please let me know by email if you intend to attend. I am happy to send the list of attendees to the Command Chaplain. Unfortunately I will not be in Sydney for the event.

I have received some compliments on the content of the Attachment. These articles are forwarded to me by you, so you are doing a good job and that is what makes the Attachment interesting. Thanks very much to those that do forward articles. Some pretty good jokes also.

This week is somewhat similar in content to last week, plenty to read and ponder, if you are critical of the jokes as there is an Irish flavour, please be assured I have Irish blood running through my veins.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 14 April 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Am marching today with the Dee Why Sub-Branch this afternoon. Bit different to be marching this early before the big day, but the decision was made not to march the Sunday prior to ANZAC Day as it is Easter Sunday. Thought it prudent to publish before the function.

Received some interesting comments about the BRISBANE’s stay in Brisbane. Have put some pics on the FB page of the visit. Barry Andrew and Dolly Gray did get to go onboard and their comments along with Larraine and Kev Uttley’s who did not get to see the ship are in the Attachment.

Details of the events and starters plus possibles for Darwin for this year’s ‘Wake”, are now contained in our website. Just click on www.mrsite.co.uk/usersitesv26/HMAS-Leeuwin-1963.com/wwwroot/page9.htm

Please let Jeff Dunn and me know if you are a starter.

There is a poster of the ADF Rugby Championships for 2019 in the Attachment. These rugby games will be held in Canberra with the Navy/RAAF game on Sunday 12 May commencing with the women’s game at 1330, men’s 1530 then the Navy/Army game on Saturday 18 May commencing at 1330 for women then men at 1530 (tentatively) Gungahlin Eagles home ground, not Duntroon. I intend going to both the RAAF and Army games. Hope to see you there.

Have been told officially the Matelot Bowls will be held at Forster commencing Monday 20 May though encouraging people to be there by Saturday 18 May to establish a social scene.

Have put all the ‘Friday Night dances’ pics on our webpage. Have a look at yourself 56 years ago. Don’t show the kids, they may not believe it is you!! The address is

Put 20 October 2019 in your diary. John Hatchman will be talking on behalf of Ken. If you have anything to offer please contact him on john.hatchman@hotmail.com

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Have been having a lot of trouble tonight forwarding the Attachment. I have reforwarded it. If you haven’t received it but want it please let me know.

There is never a dull moment in the RAN, Russ Loane forwarded the dit on the Able Seaman becoming an Officer of the Watch. There are also many more in the pipeline in SUCCESS. What a bloody great idea. Talking of SUCCESS Russ Loane and Marty Grogan are going to searide SUCCESS from Cairns to Brisbane on SUCCESS’ paying off cruise. Marty’s son Darrin is the CO. I understand their position onboard is full time heads dodgers.

That’s the good side of Navy for this week, Kev (Smouch) Smith hasn’t had such a happy experience, he relates:

‘Hi Ron,

I know you have some contacts in Navy Office so I wonder if you could pass the gist of my following observations to the appropriate person/s in Navy PR/Recruiting. Feel free to include this in our Newsletter if you wish.

I attempted to visit HMAS Brisbane today at Hamilton in Brisbane with some friends of mine, which include an 11 year old boy interested in all things military. I realised that we would not get to do an on board inspection as this was limited to pre – issued passes, but I did expect to be able to do a walk by within 50/100 metres of the ship.
The closest we could get was on the access road about 300 metres from the ship. The view from several locations was blocked by 2 to 3 storey buildings and we could only see from these locations the top of the foremast! Disappointed, we then drove over the Gateway bridge to the suburb of Colmslie on the other side of the Brisbane River to get a view of the ship. At the second location in Colmslie at end of a dirt road in an industrial area we were able to see the ship but at a distance of about one kilometre.

During these travels we came across several groups of people doing the same as us - wandering around, trying to get a better and closer view of the ship. Most of them gave up at Hamilton wharf and left. At the above mentioned dirt road a family arrived, took a photo of the ship and left.

The end result of this visit will be announced by Navy PR as a resounding success but I know that many hundreds of people will be disappointed and consider the time spent driving to see the ship a waste of time. The new HMAS Brisbane visits its namesake city for the first time and if you wish to see the ship (not do an on-board visit) the closest you can get is 300 metres for a view of the top of the foremast!

I understand and have experienced the constraints of many port visits but cannot understand why a suitable security fence could not have been placed on the wharf to allow a close walk by for the thousands of people who at short notice decided to have a look at the ship. This is not good. Navy have missed a valuable PR/Recruiting opportunity.

I also understand that ex-Navy Gunnery Chiefs can be testy but I was embarrassed as much as my friends were disappointed in our waste of time this morning.

Regards

Kev Smith’

By Ron Giveen - I am a little disappointed in BRISBANE also, I was second crew joining the ship in 69; as I wasn’t Commissioning Crew I was not permitted to attend the Commissioning Ceremony of the new ship, however, I can tell Smouch when we went to Brisbane in 1970 for its first visit we did have an open ship and the locals were all over it. It was great.

I went to see Gary Angel in hospital last Tuesday, he was bright and was recovering well. He was expecting to be flown to Port Macquarie by Air Ambulance last Thursday to have further treatment in the hospital and continue convalescence. If you wish to contact him his details are marinus.angelus@bigpond.com

G’day All. Dizzy Gillespie has gone, there are some kind words supplied by his mate Stretch . Dizzy was well known and popular throughout our time in LEEUWIN and then later in the Fleet. If Dizzy was around, he was having fun and trying to share that experience with his mates. I had spoken to him over the past few years and you may be surprised to know he was dry and spent most of his waking hours in a local gym. He became a gym junkie. He just loved pumping iron.

Hi all, Dizzy was a fighter to the end. My sister caught up with him a week before. He had just come from the gym - frail, in a wheelchair, oxygen bottle, smile on his face and still enjoying life.. I spoke to him a few months back and he was still positive. “Shit happens Stretch, but it’s not going to get me down”.

I would ring him and could barely talk he had so little lung function, but he wouldn’t let me off the phone. Loved talking of old mates, runs up top and oppos we both knew.

I hope I have his attitude when my time comes. It was an honour to call him friend.

Peter Bloomfield.

Mike ‘Shep’ Shepherd and Pooley remember Dizzy well Pooley wrote - Had many a good night out on the town with Dizzy. Farewell buddy. The good days are just beginning. Pooley.

G’day All. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you all and hope you are enjoying some black beer or Irish Whiskey with your family or mates.

Bev and I were in Christchurch doing the Tommy Tourist thing, acting fat, dumb and happy, not hearing one bullet shot but were within a K or two of both Mosques on Friday, spending our last day in NZ walking and doing the tourist tram thing. We saw a lot of the police chase action and was wondering what had occurred. Wasn’t much fun when the city went into ‘Lock Down’ as we were trying to get out.

Haven’t heard any more about Don Muller’s death.

Don’t know whether you know of or knew Geoff Vickridge. Have just received notice of him passing over the bar and have included it in the Attachment. I met him when I was working on the Board of Inquiry for the fire and deaths in WESTRALIA in 1999. He was a barrister and a really good bloke. He was also instrumental in donating and presenting a trophy for the LEEUWIN Rugby player of each intake. This trophy is currently in the RANRU Rugby Museum at KUTTABUL.

Unfortunately I did not get any details of Don Muller’s funeral. I can only assume the funeral ceremony have been completed by now. Schubes has had enquiries about this.

G’day All. A quiet week for some of us, however there has been a lot happening Nationally with the Emergencies, we certainly have had our fair share, from FNQ floods, through the other Eastern States fire and drought and WA fire. There is an article in the Attachment advertising a charity drive for the FNQ floods for ADF personnel.

All of you who have email addresses receive birthday wishes from Schubes if the address I advertise is correct. Must thank John Hatchman for chasing up Bob Johnston’s email address. We are back in contact.

Have put all the ‘Friday Night dances’ pics on our webpage. Have a look at yourself 56 years ago. Don’t show the kids, they may not believe it is you!! The address is
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page43.htm

Have made changes to our ‘members page’ of our website. You will not be able to copy and paste an address as I have replaced all the email addresses with the word ‘dot’ in lieu of the other ‘.’. Received this advice from Boong. I reckon it will work.

I have received notification from the Command Chaplain, there will be three Dedication Ceremonies this year. They will be held in March, May and October. Keri Henderson-Smith has asked for Hyphen’s Dedication Service to be held in March; saying that, the family does not want anybody to speak on Hyphen’s behalf. Kaye Slotboom has asked to have Karl’s Dedication service on 19 May. Kaye has sent me a copy of Karl’s Service Certificate and I have a dit on Karl. Spook has indicated he will run with the Eulogy.

The Mons Cup this year will be held at Randwick Barracks, Avoca Street Randwick on Wednesday 20 March probably starting about 0930. CYA there. The ASRU or now known as ADFRU interservice rugby games will be held in Canberra with the Navy/Army game on Saturday 18 May at (tentatively) Gungahlin Eagles home ground, not Duntroon.

Have been told unofficially the Matelot Bowls will be held at Forster commencing Saturday 25 May. Will confirm when I receive the notice.

G’day All. What a sports weekend, the Big Bash was a great game, who would have guessed the result halfway through the second innings. I took my Grandson Noah to watch Winx win her 30th race and prove she is the greatest racehorse in the world. It was an emotional experience for Chris Waller and the crowd. We then went to see the Waratah’s V Hurricanes super 15 match at Brookvale thanks to tickets from Macca.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 10 February 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Chris Mansbridge has passed over the bar, Barry Parker has picked up this melancholy information from the latest edition of Reville. I had Chris’ address as Canberra but hadn’t heard from him for a long time. If anybody has any info on his passing please let me know.

Today/yesterday we assembled to honour those who lost their lives on VOYAGER. The ceremony in new look Voyager Park, Huskisson was officiated by the CRESWELL Chaplain Max. Those from our group who were there: Tom and Val Houldsworth, Russ and Georgina Nelson, Mike and Jill Hogan, Spook Cairns, Shep and Jean Shephard, Schubes and Marian Schubert, Sandy Powell, Mick Gallager, John and Lyn Hatchman and myself.

We had a mini meeting at the Sunday luncheon to determine the way ahead in Darwin in September, I showed everybody who was there Jeff Dunn’s email with the options. There was a clear majority wanting the ‘Admiralty House’ option.

Several of our group attended Ken Fielding’s funeral last Thursday at Mt Thompson Cemetery at Holland Park Brisbane. There is a pic on our FB page. John Hatchman did an excellent job speaking about his ‘time with Ken’.

Has anybody received any spam/scam emails relating to the ‘Member’s page’ on our website. Brian Gorringe alerted me of the issue, have received one other response confirming the copying of the email address and have checked my ‘junk mail’. I have one also. I have contacted the host. To ensure maximum security the advice I received was to take the email addresses off the page. If you want your email address left on the ‘members page’ of our website
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page3.htm please let me know, otherwise I will be taking all the addresses off that page.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 3 February 2019
www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. The loss of Ken Fielding has dominated our conversations this week. He had nicknames, KI and Dinga that I knew of. His funeral will be commence 1530 this Thursday 7 February at the Eastern Chapel, Mt Thompson Crematorium. I have passed all the sympathy messages forwarded to me to Marilyn’s email address. John Hatchman, Ken’s best mate, has been asked to speak about Ken and he will also speak on our behalf. We should have quite a good representation at the funeral. Unfortunately, I had made a firm commitment elsewhere and I cannot make this special service.

The anniversary of the MELBOURNE/VOYAGER collision occurs on 10 February in Huskisson. As you know we attend this memorial ceremony each year. Mike and Jean Shepherd, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Sandy Powell, Mick Gallagher, Tom and Val Houldsworth, Schubes and Marian, Russ and Georgina Nelson, John and Lyn Hatchman, Spook Cairns, Ken Scarisbrick, Bill and Narelle Hay and I will be there. Doug and Trish Wilson (other plans)and Robyn and Wally Gawne (will be travelling in the Southern states) will not be able to make it this year, Mike Hogan is a probable. I have booked tables for 19 commencing at 1830 at Club Jervis Bay (Husky RSL). I will be there from about 1700. Tom has purchased a wreath for the ceremony.

Has anybody received any spam/scam emails relating to the ‘Member’s page’ on our website. Brian Gorringe received one. I have contacted the host; they have not responded to date. A copy of Brian’s email to me is in the Attachment. Additionally, there are quite a few other interesting articles this week. Ward Hack’s Australia Day speech (a good read), Call the Hands had to be forwarded in two extra emails tonight but a good read. I could go on as all the articles are interesting.
The death of Captain J.P. Stevenson, who was the CO of MELBOURNE in 1969 when we were involved in the collision with USS FRANK E EVANS passed away last week at age 98. A remarkable and well respected man.

I have received notification from the Command Chaplain, there will be three Dedication Ceremonies this year. They will be held in March, May and October. I have forwarded these dates to Keri Henderson-Smith and Kaye Slotboom to work out which one suits them. Karl Slotboom’s and Greg (Hyphen) Henderson-Smith Dedication Ceremony will be held in 2019. Kaye has sent me a copy of Karl’s Service Certificate and I have a dit on Karl. Spook has indicated he will run with the Eulogy. Nev Barry wishes to speak on behalf of Hyphen. Will keep you informed about the Dedication Service.

We have some more starters for Darwin for this year’s ‘Wake”, Kath Sheavils is attending with her niece, Hector Hart, Darby Ashton and maybe Glenn Butler and Hoss Potter. Jim Harris is also a possible. The dates for our major function in Darwin have been settled as 14 and 15 September 2019. Looking at the names, it appears only the surnames commencing with A-H are only receiving my emails, there is an R then W’s. Is there something in a name. Please let me know if you are a starter.

Is your email address correct on our Members Page www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page3.htm
Check it out, if it is not correct please let me know, I can fix it.

G’day All. Rocky Frier commented on whether any of us continued our friendships with the girls from the Friday night dances. To a lot of us, it would have been our first girlfriend. Did anybody have a long relationship or marry one of the girls. They were all beautiful. Schubes has contacted some mates of his from the 5th intake to see whether they would like the pics they are included in. If you have any mates from the 5th intake please ask them.

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN of 6 January 2019

G’day All. Received some sad news today, Jan Powell passed away due to cancer, unfortunately she suffered from this dreaded disease for 7 years, she was a real fighter and deserved a better life, she kept a positive outlook right up to the final week. On Christmas Eve she was informed by her specialist team they could do not more to help her, she was allowed to go home in palliative care, she stayed alive for Sandy’s birthday and passed away shortly after. Her family were with her over the Christmas period. Our deepest condolences to Sandy and his family on their sad loss. Our thoughts are with them.

The anniversary of the MELBOURNE/VOYAGER collision occurs on 10 February in Huskisson. As you know we attend this memorial ceremony each year. Thanks to all who are responding helping to put names to the pics. When I get the names sorted and some time I intend to send all the pics to those identified.

For those who joined in January 63 it is now 56 years since you signed the dotted line. Was wondering, whether in either of our two intakes whether anybody joined on their birthday. Schubes and Terry Dack must have been close.

Was in contact with a Naval Association sub-branch in Victoria, they had drawn a cheque to pay for Greg Henderson-Smith’s Dedication Plaque at GI Chapel. Just goes to show what a genuine and popular bloke he was.

Karl Slotboom’s and Greg (Hyphen) Henderson-Smith Dedication Ceremony will be held in 2019. Kaye has sent me a copy of Karl’s Service Certificate and I have a dit on Karl.
