www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Merry Christmas everybody, hope we all get out there and enjoy the event with your kids, grand kids and mates. Really a big week for celebrations which include the summer solstice (one of my favourite days). Thanks very much for all the emails conveying your Christmas wishes; I really appreciate them.

Several years ago at a not so well attended function one of our group asked me, whether, as a group we had run our race and asked whether it was worth continuing. Fortunately we did, and his contribution early and since has been right up there. I think our little group is becoming stronger as the years turn. This year we have come together quite regularly commencing with the 50th anniversary of the MELBOURNE/VOYAGER collision, functions in Sydney and Newcastle, sub committee meetings in Adelaide and Mannum to organise our 2015 reunion, Bowls at Dubbo and a dedication service for Squizzy Taylor at GI Chapel.

Huskisson Tuesday 10 February All those interested in attending the service and dinner to commemorate the collision of MELBOURNE/VOYAGER please let me know. Tom will be in contact with the Hannays who represent the VOYAGER people to ascertain their position. Spook Cairns, Sandy and Rhonda Michels, Tom and Val Houldsworth, John and Lyn Hatchman plus Mike and Jean Shephard have already indicated they are starters.

Glen Butler is progressing slowly since the fall and is very happy he did not break anything, his arm and shoulder are improving slowly

Pee Wee Petherick Hi Ron, lost soul, Pee Wee here. Just to let you know that my wife and I had lunch with Kev and Laraine Uttley last week, who were up here in Caloundra house sitting for some friends. They were walking around Golden Beach last weekend, when they stumbled across TS Onslow, which was getting ready for their passing out parade, and happened to ask someone if I was still involved with the unit. The certain committee member replied to the affirmative, and invited them down for the parade later on that day. It was a great surprise to see Kev, as the last time I saw him was about four years ago when he was still in Greenslopes hospital. He couldn't talk, walk or move any limbs then, but now he is walking with an aid of a walking stick, and his speech is a lot better. He is looking great, just like the old Kev we knew years ago. We will probably catch up with them both in the new year. I hope you have a lovely Christmas Ron, and send my greetings on to the rest of our clan.
Regards
Pee Wee Petherick.

Tiny Graves forwarded this: This is a Christmas Message to the group, Merry Christmas to all and may you receive the real meaning of Christmas,

Ken Fielding Hi I trust you and yours are okay and getting ready for the festive season. Yesterday I caught up with Henry Ptak and it was like old times discussing all those memories from the past. Henry tells me he now gets your weekly email and says he enjoys reading all the articles etc. I told him about all the reunions we have had and that he should think about coming to our next in Adelaide. I told him that all that remember him would love to catch up. So I will be working on him about Adelaide. Henry has been trying to look at getting the medals that we got for the trips on Melbourne in 1966/67 , but they come back and say they have no record of him on the Melbourne except 1964. I remember when I first started chasing up my medals someone gave me a website to go to and you put in your name rank and serial number the ship you were on and the years referring to and it went away and did search and then came back with an answer, but I can’t think of the website. I said to Henry I would see if anyone in our group may be able to help him. I know he was on those trips as we stepped together and we played footy on the Melbourne, as per the photo of the rugby team Melbourne 1967, he is in the picture front row. (can anybody help?)

The pic of the tribute to ‘Nuff Nuff’ seems to have gone viral on the defence sites. This and other interesting articles are in the Attachment.

G’day All. Hope all is well and you are preparing for the onset of the Festive season. Takes a lot of training to prepare so start now, you don’t have to wait to the sun is over the yardarm. Just kidding of course.

We met today at Rockers for lunch. Ian Schubert, John Hatchman, Tom Houldsworth, Kev Bock, Mick Gallagher and myself enjoyed the customary lunch and a laugh. Had several apologies; Spook Cairns, Doug Wilson, Mac McKenzie and Phil Clements. We discussed the coming reunion in Adelaide along with our next get together which will be in Huskisson for the February 10 anniversary of the MELBOURNE/VOYAGER collision.

Haven’t heard from Glen Butler since his fall last Thursday. Hope his recovery was swift.

It was good to see the trade off option for the ADF pay rise being overturned. It is satisfying to see the petition get up even if it is only half way there. There is follow up email comparing the salaries of CDF and a Warrant Officer. This and other interesting articles are in the Attachment.

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Leaving Adelaide early Monday. Baby Oscar arrived home Thursday afternoon, Mum and baby well.

On Friday caught up for lunch with Nifty and Dianne Thomas, Bob and Pat Stupple and Alley and Jenny Coglan. Saturday. The lunch was initiated by Glen Butler; unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the lunch. Glen had a fall on Thursday resulting in a dislocated shoulder and stitches; Glen escaped from the claws of the hospital late Thursday night.

Caught up with Fred Howes and Dave Scarce for lunch on Saturday at Fred’s favourite watering hole in Adelaide the Royal Yacht Club. What a great way to enjoy Adelaide. Fred and Scarcey both well.

Butch Cousins Have to see GP on Thursday and Oncologist in early Feb. It doesn't seem that they can do much about it, apart from varying the dosage of the chemo. I'm having a bit of trouble with energy levels, but I suppose there are a lot of folks worse off than me. My great nephew has joined the RAAF as an air police. Goes in at the end of Jan. Might teach him a bit of responsibility seems to be lacking in the current generation (or is it just me?) Hope little Oscar is home and OK. You had better bring him back to the Premier state because we need a few forwards who are not afraid to get cauliflower ears. All the best to Bev and the family, hope Santa hasn't forgotten your address mate. Butch.

Kev Utterley So nice to hear that Kev's mates are still thinking of him.
He had a couple of falls in the shower this year which has set him back a bit as he has now developed anxiety problems. He has also lost a lot of confidence so not progressing as well as expected.

His speech has improved slightly as in he can recall more words and loves the opportunity to be involved in a conversation if he gets the opportunity.

We are still hanging in there although it's a long road we are travelling.

Kevin loves to hear all the navy news and relive all the great memories of his Navy days and Reunions that he attended.
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Kevin and I are housesitting at Caloundra until the end of next week. Do you know of any of the guys who might be up this way and who might like to catch up with Kevin for a cuppa?

Regards

Kev and Larraine

Tales From Tasmania XI - by Dolly Gray

The Kentucky Hillbillies ‘Aint Got Nuttin’ On Us.

Down here in Tassie we have a cultural clash that rivals the best of them. There is a North / South divide down here that is almost impenetrable. The hillbillies of Kentucky are but pale imitations.

The 38th parallel, the Mason-Dixon line, the WW1 Hindenburg line and the Demilitarised Zone in VietNam were all easier to penetrate than our dividing line at the 42nd parallel.

It all started back in 1804 when two separate colonies were established in Van Diemen’s Land.
The southern, Hobart, colony was settled direct from England and the northern, Launceston, colony was settled from Sydney.
They both had separate administrations and governors. The southern colony was called the County of Buckinghamshire and the northern one was the County of Cornwall. All very British – weren’t we.

There was enormous bickering between them if the authorities in England or Sydney allocated £1 more to either one.

They each had their own Aussie Rules football leagues. And, because of this disunity, it brought about the demise of both leagues. A unified resurgence occurred in 2009 but it’s a much diluted comp.

When AFL teams began playing a couple of matches per year in Tassie the old North / South rivalry resurrected with arguments about whether the games should be played at Aurora Stadium in Launceston or Bellerive ( Blundstone Arena ) in Hobart. Ex-Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett went on record to say that the Hawks wanted no part of the Tasmanian north / south divide warfare.

The North has its “Examiner” daily newspaper and the South has the “Mercury.” Its considered unpatriotic if you read the other tribe’s newspaper.

In the 50’s the town clerks of Launceston & Hobart got together to symbolically “bury the hatchet.” A pair of gold-plated hatchets were buried under the pavement of a Hobart street to signify the death of separatism. A metal plaque was overlaid. A couple of years ago it was decided to dig them up and whack them in the museum. Alas – neither the hatchets nor the plaque could be found. It was almost like the mystical rock that was rolled from the cave entrance in biblical times – a resurrection of the rivalry !

At the moment $millions of the taxpayers dollars are being spent on modifications at Risdon Jail here. Separate exercise and recreational facilities are being constructed to keep the warring, north / south, inmates apart. Apparently they are at each other’s throats and have become a management problem for the prison administration. ( They’re worse than rival bikie gangs )
Whatever happened to the cheaper option – firing squad. A bit harsh you think ?

And in today’s paper is an article that says it all. How to solve the problem of a family picnic if some of the relos’ are from the North and others from the South. Well, the paper recommends having the picnic at the town of Ross which is in “neutral” territory right on the 42nd parallel.

There’s a business opportunity here. I might open a café at Ross for family reunions and call it “The Demilitarised Zone.” With signs out front saying ; Leave Your Guns At The Door. No Bare Feet. Spit Out Your Chewin’ Tobacco Before Entering.

The other day my son ( ex-pussers dib-dab ) was banging on about the unsuitability of the Canberra's motto in this day and age ; "Queen & Country."
I don't disagree with him and it got me thinking about all the olde world mottos our ships are saddled with. Some in latin such as the Melbourne's Vires Acquirit Eundo.

So its about time we came up with ships mottos that are more applicable to the Oz of today.

A few suggestions ;

G’day All. Thanks for the emails on our Grandson Oscar, unfortunately, he is still in Adelaide Womens and Childrens hospital with a slight problem, expected to be out in a couple of days.
Nev Barry is now living in NSW. Tasmania was too cold for him. He lives outside Bathurst, there are two towns there, they are called Neville and Barry. He may have gone home to roost.

Missed catching up with Jim Harris as he travelled to Brisbane to be with his son Ryan.

Glen and Suzette Butler Just to advise we met up with Peter and Wendy Launder for the Seabourn cruise fabulous time although 13 day tour of duty was about all the liver and stomach could endure glad to see the final port of Barcelona (Followed by 4 more days of frivolity)

We are now back in Adelaide although originally meant to be in Europe for another Month... Time to smell the Roses like the rest of my lucky ex Navy mates . We decided at the last minute when we got back to Holland Mom not doing so well at 91 which also prompted the return. More than happy to catch up with any of the boys now that I am back you can contact me on 0411479567 Glen and Suzette Butler

Butch Cousins Received the weekly news this am (18/11) was starting to worry about you but then I saw you mention 0350 and realised what a shock it must have been to find out that there was a 3.50 in the am. Hope you have recovered and are building up your strength for the hard yards of being a grandpa again. Tell Daddles Dack that I will buy one of his clocks and will try to teach him how to tell the time when I see him
next year. ( He had a bit of a reputation of never being on time when serving.)
I am going to Qld for a week in Jan. if that constitutes travel, My Baby sister is turning Sixty. No wonder I'm starting to feel a trifle aged. Hope the baby looks like Bev, couldn't handle one that looks like you. You better bring him (or her) home with you before they brain wash him(or her) with the vfl. Well Ron, Hope Mum and Bub as well as Grand Parents are all Well. Oh by the way, My Niece picked up her second hook the other day, POSTD Cousins. Has a certain ring to it I reackon. G’day All. Arrived in Adelaide on Friday, we did the camping trip with two of our grandkids with the cubs in the Adelaide Hills (yeah it rained) over the weekend, arrived back in Adelaide to find our daughter is in labour, expected to have her baby either today or tomorrow Monday, big weekend. Arrived 0345 Monday morning.

Have been in contact with Fred Howes and he had organised a sailing and fishing trip in the early part of this week subject to his daughter Sally’s health, well I cannot make it now due to Sharon’s baby. Something to look forward to in the future.

Intend catching up with Jim Harris whilst in Adelaide.

Tales From Tasmania X

Yesterday we had our mandatory fortnightly train derailment.
Fortunately, TASRAIL do not operate passenger services anymore. The last passenger rail service was in 1978. Now they are virtually a one-trick pony with a single line running from the north coast of Tas down to Bridgewater, about 17km north of Hobart. The line did continue down to Hobart but this portion was closed down 6 months ago.

Only a freight service now operates a couple of times a week and talk about a toy train set. Its just like Puffing Billy but with diesel locos. The track gauge is only 1.067 metres wide. ( 3’6” ) So narrow that it looks like those miniature train rides at carnivals.

The train always derails at the same place where the track goes through hills at Colebrook. I reckon TASRAIL’s emergency derail repair team are actually permanently stationed at Colebrook. They know within a hundred metres or so where the train will come off the track. Probably know roughly what day of the week as well.
This time the 2 locos and several freight cars are lying on their sides like pissed stokers after a brewery tour.

For nearly 50 years the Russians and the Yanks have been ferrying astronauts to and from space with few mishaps but, down here in Tassie, we can’t get a toy train-set to stay on the rails.

G’day All. Have been on the Atherton Tableland for a week, God’s country. There was a Barra Bash at Tinaroo Dam last weekend. Barra caught up to 29kg. Huge fish and lots of them. On Thursday I caught up for lunch with Annie and Jerry Oakley who live in Cairns. Annie and Jerry are both well.
Jim Hammond and Dave Hanlon recently caught up with Roger Williams and David Haining after about 44 years. Roger, (formerly known as Surfie) now lives on the Sunshine Coast and is still working as a marine engineer. David lives near Gympie and is recently retired. David’s wife Helen also joined us.

After reminiscing at Roger’s place we adjourned to the Caloundra RSL for lunch, a drink, and more catching up.
Dave and I were pleasantly surprised by how quickly we reengaged with Roger and David after so many years.
Good friendships do last a long time. Next visit is planned around Christmas. Jim Hammond

Barry Parker writes My wife Margaret and I will be attending the Adelaide reunion next year so add our names to the list. As a further aside we travelled to South Africa in September and had a 24 hour layover in Perth and the good fortune to catch up with Tony Gysen and his wife Ann. I had not seen Tony since 1967 so we had much to talk about after all these years. Tony also convinced me to sign up for the Adelaide reunion. Cheers, Barry Parker

Mike and Jean Shephard have been working to get Sydney house onto the market while there still appears to be heat in it (the market, not the house!). Dolly writes from Tasmania

Rabbits – no, not the crap we bought Up-Top.

Down here in the Apple Isle we’re up to our goolies in rabbits. The calicivirus that was developed to knock holes in Oz’s rabbit population has worked a treat in the dry and semi-arid regions of Australia. ( Just like Quig’s backyard )

But, unfortunately, it is not effective in the more fertile greener regions such as Gippsland and Tasmania.

Gippsland though has something to keep the rabbits in check which Tassie doesn’t. Foxes.

With no natural predator they are breeding like flies. In the mornings there are 30 to 40 rabbits on our block chomping through our grass and ring-barking our native bushes and shrubs.

I’ve tried a couple of methods to deter them without success. Then, the other day, I saw something in Bunnings that might do the trick. It was a “scare-owl.” About 40cm high with big eyes. The spiel on the box said that it protects your garden from rabbits, possums and other vermin. ( Chief G.I’s )

You have to change its position every day so the rabbits don’t become accustomed to it.

It only took a week to determine that the scare-owl was a fucking dismal failure. I had to put the owl up in a tree to protect him from the rabbits. They were ganging up on him and it was only a matter of time before they pack-raped him.

I was starting to feel sorry for the poor plastic prick. I just didn’t want to see him sexually molested.

So now I’m trying to pick up some land-mines on Ebay or, if anyone’s got a secondhand flamethrower, I’m in the market.

Just a note on the car rego, I also have a suitable QLD number plate.......RAN063 in gold with blue lettering, on my brown Pajero. I have the obligatory stickers like RAN Communicators, Ensigns and the Leeuwin Stickers of our own 1963 era. Have to have a Welsh sticker for me and an Irish one for my little lady, Phyllis too.

Recently been in the wars or skirmishes really. Ambulance trips firstly for a heart problem, which turned out to be AF due to stress or sleep apnea they reckon. They have since determined my heart is 100% and so no worries there. A couple of weeks later I dislocated my right hip whilst leaving a message for the last prime minister in the little room. Quite a painful experience and I had forgotten how bad it was, as it used to happen a lot 15 years ago or so. Spent the night in Redcliffe hospital and was out 24 hours later and all is well again after a general to put it back in.

I am due to have the hip replaced again, for the third time, due to osteolysis. That is where the bone around the prosthesis is being eaten away by anti bodies. That replacement is now due on the 23rd of January and I will be off my feet for 3 months as I have to have a bone graft, so no weight bearing at all. The other hip was replaced 11 months ago and is still not a 100% so limping around. That is Phyllis fault too, as she said if I put it in my shoe, that will make me limp. Phyllis says she will put me over her shoulders to carry me around the place. Can you imagine that, she is 5ft and 8 stone and is already looking after me all day and night anyway. I hope to loose a kilo or two before then, but with my form of not being able to walk far and lack of mobility overall, I doubt it. Oh, and the food too. Been sleeping in a recliner for the last 5 years since I had my knee and knee cap replaced and have also been on the wagon for 8 years now. Some would think that is a good job too.

Otherwise in good health and enjoying life, involved and spend a lot of time at the Caboolture Amateur Radio Club, although not very active from home, chatting to the world.

Cheers Tank

Garry Pyke Have started the process for Dedication Ceremony for Garry. Details as they come to hand.

Moot Sutton has seen better days, he writes
Just a quick word to let you know that I’m finishing my third week of rehab getting over a heart attack (3 weeks tomorrow, Sunday)
Within 22 hours I was into Shoalhaven emergency then up to Wollongong for a Angiogram to clear a total blockage of one of the major blood vessels supplying the heart and a stent put in. Several days in W’gong to check that the medications were working and then home and into the rehab education treadmill. Like clockwork.

Everything is going OK. Touchwood. Very little damage done but the 6 – 8 week rehab schedule is a pain in the bum and an eye opener all at once. Level 4 starts next week. I can then mop and vacuum, light gardening and limit lifting weights to 5 kgs with moderate walking/exercises for 1 hour per day 5 days per week.

The body says I can do more but the medico’s and the head says stick to the program.

A little known fact is that ones driving licence is suspended as a consequence of having a heart attack but doctor says I’m OK to drive again which is a relief because the public transport down here is bloody pathetic.

Level 6 says I can have 5 bottles of wine or 10 kgs (not to drink all at once).

Soon be back to full marathons (in my mind).

At least depression hasn’t set in.

See you in the spring.

Nifty Thomas writes. There may be a few who are not aware of a significant ANZAC centenary event of special interest to ex matelots, with a commemoration due to take place this Friday, the 31st of October.

The event is the Albany Convoy Commemoration Event; that is it will be 100 years to the day the first convoy departed Albany WA for Europe with thousands of troops from the AIF and NZ Expeditionary Force. There is a beaut big commemoration ceremony taking place in Albany and numerous ships will be in as you might expect. There is plenty of reading, I suggest anyone interested check out www.anzaccentenary.gov.au/program/acce.htm

The Marion RSL sub-branch (suburban Adelaide) will also commemorate the event in its own small way.

We have arranged for a temporary loan of the ships bell from HMAS Glenelg I (1942 Corvette with battle honours). The bell will be hung on a suitable scaffold specially built for purpose and dressed with a nice ‘pussers’ style bell rope which I finished making a couple of weeks ago. (Macramé for men). It will hang in the Ron Zilm entrance to the club, gangway style with HMAS Torrens ships crest and buoy on display nearby. We intend to modify the usual 6:00 pm Friday Ode where a cartridge case is struck 6 times on the hour, the Ode is read and the last post is played, etc. On this special, one off occasion, we will call the club (mess deck) to Stand To with a Bosun’s Pipe, strike 8 bells, read the Naval Ode, last post and sound the All Clear on the Bosun’s pipe. The Club President will read out some facts and details about the event for club members during his weekly address just prior to the Ode, so everyone will understand what and why it is taking place.

This is a unique, that is one-off opportunity to be part of something very special and I hope as many of our Adelaide lads and hopefully others will come down and enjoy a few cold beers and participate in what will be a very short but moving commemoration. BTW, the bell was taken out of its cabinet last week for the first time in probably 60 years. I’m pleased to say it still sounds as clear and bright as ever. I’m looking forward to playing bosun’s mate one more time. I reckon it might be another 100 years before that particular bell gets run again as it will be going back into the Glenelg Historical Museum after a short time on display at the Marion RSL. See you there.

BTW, yes we know 6:00 pm is 4 bells and change of Dog Watch, but on this occasion we are going for 8 bells ‘cause we reckon the occasion is worth something extra.

Cheers
Nifty (Nev) Thomas.

Les Barclay writes I have thought of dropping you a line for some time now as an apology for not attending any of the activities that the group are participating in but my hobby of coaching two swimming clubs in Canberra consumes my time for 50 weeks a year.

I do look forward though to the weekly news and reading the exploits of the 1963 group and appreciate the effort you put into it I thank you.

As mentioned coaching a group of young athletes consumes ones time with the 4 AM starts and the 8pm finishes together with the weekend swim meets and camps. I took a redundancy from the public service in December 2012 but now am busier than ever.

Had a scare with Bowel cancer last year but have been given the all clear after one operation so am now on the monitoring go around.

Keep up the great communication and I will grab an opportunity when it arises to attend what happens to be on

Regards

Les

G’day All. Have you all seen the proposed pay increases that CDF has signed off on. What a bloody disgrace. One and a half percent a year, less that the CPI and the trade off is they lose their Extra Recreational Allowance (that’s a week a year to sailors). He should be representing their case not selling them out. This topic and more are in the Enclosure along with a lot more.
We all enjoyed the Newcastle function, our numbers were small our spirits were not. Eight turned up Sandy and Jan Powell, Spook Cairns, Mike Hogan, Michael Alymer, Schubes, Mick Gallagher (with his banjo), and myself. Ted Hase, Mac McKenzie, Tom Houldsworth, John Tant, Froggy French, Les Allan, Brian Gorringe plus Mike and Jean Shephard forwarded apologies. It was especially pleasing to see the Powell’s there as Jan is not as well as she should be at present. Mick Gallagher organised the pics, they will be posted on our Facebook page in due course.

We have one of the dueling guitarists attending what about the other. Will Mick Gallagher make the trip? What about the other Central Coast and Mid Coast savages? Ted Hase, Mac McKenzie and John Tant have forwarded their apologies while Froggy French forwarded the following: I would like to tender my apologies for Friday 17th October at the Brewery in Newcastle. Unfortunately that week I am overseas. Newcastle is a great run ashore and I still visit there from time to time on business. I have over many years seen Honeysuckle grow from just an old wharf area to what is now a strip of bars and restaurants - definitely well worth a weekend ashore there. Hi Ron,

I have looked at a post on FB from Andrew Carter (Ex Rugby Player and mate from years long gone).

Here is the text of the Post:

Driving up the Qld Coast yesterday and stopped at a service centre at Morayfield(I think) about 0930.
In the car park was a silver 4 wheel drive and the owner was obviously a loud and proud ex JR.
He had a 1963 JRTE, Vampire and Melbourne stickers and Vietnam Vet stickers on the car and the number plate was RAN63.
I wanted to hang around and have a yarn but my travelling oppos were in a hurry. I just thought he maybe a member on here.

I was wondering myself who it would be and am assuming it is someone from the 6th intake. If you cannot put your finger on who it is could we put this in the newsletter as I would like to get back to Andrew with a name if possible or just confirm the intake.
CU possibly on Thursday at the Pub if you are coming in or Friday in Newcastle.

G’day All. Hope the school holidays are treating you well. Spent a few days in Auckland with the Navy Rugby team. We didn’t do as well as we wanted, but according to the coach ‘Dave Carter’, better than he expected. Great couple of days with good mates and not surprisingly good beer. If anyone would be interested in participating in 3 years time let me know. We will be going to either the US or UK.

For Ken Railton, I met up with Terry Jones during the week, he played with you in the WATSON team of 64.

Souths have belted Canterbury in the GF. What a shame the NQ Cowboys didn’t make it. It would have been a contest.

Doug Wilson wants to put balance into the argument:
Just thought I would put my two bobs worth in response to the right wing rants that appear from time to time in the attachments of our newsletter. If you substitute the name Abbott for Menzies the word muslim for communist the name Rupert Murdoch for Frank Packer and do you see something all too familiar? Surely we have all been around long enough to realise the complex problems we have in the world today will not be solved by chanting jingoistic slogans and commencing military action against people with a different idiology to us. They say the first sign of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. What if we put our resources into helping people like those people in West Africa struggling with Ebola? Who knows we might achieve something positive for a change. Cheers Doug Wilson.

“Is There A Greenie In The House.”

Down here in Tassie the CSIRO Antarctic Research Division has just taken delivery of it’s new research vessel, the RV Investigator.
And it really looks a picture in its nice blue & white colour scheme. Only one small problem. It can’t be connected to shore power !!!!!

I think we collectively blew a fuse. The spin ( I’m being polite here ) from the CSIRO is that they “couldn’t set up for it until it arrived as they didn’t know how much shore power it would consume.” As Paul Keating once said, “give-me-a-break.”

Delivery has been 3 years and this includes the 1 year overdue period. You would have thought that, in that time, someone would have looked at the specs to see its power consumption figures or, as I suspect, what type of power it uses. Because the CSIRO say they are working on an “on-wharf” electrical supply facility my guess is that the ship has a 110V system. ( Does this mean that every wharf in Oz, that its likely to use, will have to have an expensive makeover ? )

Maybe someone should have just rang Mr Wong at the Singapore constructor and asked what the power supply details were.
When you buy a $60G electric car it comes with complete power consumption specifications. But a $125 million dollar ship doesn’t ???
Imagine getting on a Qantas flight to London and asking the pilot what the fuel consumption rate was and he replies, “dunno mate – I’ll let you know if we make it.”

The research vessel is normally parked at a wharf adjacent to the CSIRO facility but, because they have to keep the diesel-powered generators fired up 24/7, the noise upset the local residents so they’ve had to move the ship to a non-preferred berth at Macquarie Wharf about 1.5k away.

There have been significant retrenchments of CSIRO staff down here in the past 12 months. I reckon one of them is the only bloke who knows which cupboard the extension lead and double-adaptor is kept in.

Speedie Hannant Kaye and I would like our names to be put down for the 2015 Adelaide reunion. We have checked our calendar and we will be back from overseas by then so everything should be fine. Since I retired and recovered from my spinal fusion surgery, we have been doing a lot of overseas travel, usually 3 trips a year. The surgery was 100% successful and I am now also a member of the local Men’s Shed so I am keeping myself very busy making anything from a Japanese Shamisen 3 string instrument to woodworking hand tools. Life is never boring.

I do enjoy receiving and reading your news letters. It is great seeing what everyone is up to and seeing their names bring back good memories.

Please send my best wishes to everyone.

G’day All. Spoke to Spook Cairns, he is well and has booked seating for us at the Brewery in Newcastle from 1200 on Friday 17 October. Spoke to Les Allan he is well also, he has been doing quite a bit of house sitting in Nanango and other regional areas. Spoke to Rod Hazell he was visiting Pete McMillan in Port Pirie. I think Rod was returning west after playing (Captain/Coach of WA) in the Masters AFL Comp in Adelaide. (Heard he has been signed up for the Swans next year). Anyone wanting to say G’day to Pete contact Rod or myself for contact details. Pete is well. Spoke to Schubes, we are looking for a starter to run with Gary Pykes eulogy.

Schubes forwarded this:

Today Marian and I caught up with Phyllis & Gareth ‘Tank” Evans for lunch at the Tuggeranong Rugby Union Club here in Canberra they are here for a few days visiting his son. It was very a enjoyable time and we discussed many things past and present.

Tank is having issues with one of his hips and as I understand is going into hospital early in the New Year to has this fixed (3rd time). Let’s hope this is the end of the issue for him!

He is looking forward to catching up with everyone next year.

Cheers,

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 21 September 2014

www.hmas-leeuwin-1963.com/page2.htm

G’day All. Our get together at the Brewery in Newcastle on Friday 17 October is fast approaching. Who is going. My recollection of our most recent experience there was Mick Gallagher and Les Allan taking over the music scene (in other words making the most noise) as they are want to do. It was the last time I spoke to the late Garry Hardman and to quite a few of our group who live in the area. It was a memorable get together. C’mon you people, lets make this function a goer.

Received an email from Col Yench: Sorry it has taken me two weeks to answer your request but due to ill health I won`t be able to help with Gary Pyke’s dedication. Just over 12 months ago I had the right hip done, unfortunately, I ended up with an infection last September. They then put me back in hospital and also found that with the hips now straight and even, I had two bulging discs l4/l5/s1 consequently the way ahead, was ‘a nerve block’. I was further told surgery may be the only option as nerve blocks work but a not a long term solution. In late March early April the nerve block wore off and it was decided to do a decompression. This occurred in June, not nice, at the moment I am house bound, no more than 30 mins in a car without walking and lifting no more than 5kg (it’s a boring life). I see the surgeon in the next fortnight (week 12) and he reckons it could take up to two years before he would be comfortable with me flying or doing any long trips.

Doubt if anyone would be interested about my back, but I`m pleased to know I do have a back bone and even though it is plated and screwed it has worked for a long time, it is just in the last four years that I have fallen apart. I have lost some movement in my right leg and find it difficult to climb stairs and get in and out of the SUV we own.

I have a photo taken in Singapore of Gary and I and three other ORDCO`s when we were on the Yarra together in 65. Nearly everytime I have a coffee or wine I think of him, it`s ‘cheers mate’
Cheers Col

If you are in Sydney and want to have a gander please let me know, would love to show all. The intention of this collection is to have all exhibits available to view online. G’day All. Life is good. Our group were represented in the Annual Diggers Bowls competition at Dubbo. We had three teams of three, Barry Andrew, Nifty Nev Thomas and Mal Ritchie (Tingira Boys), Tom Houldsworth, Dan Tiley and Ron Pope (LEEUWIN 63’s), we were also represented by Carole Pope, Dianne Thomas and Marion Schubert (The Minders). Supporters included KayMarie Andrew, Pauline Ritchie, Val Houldsworth, Val’s brother Ted and sister in law, Mike and Jean Shephard, Schubes and myself. Spike (Ron) Jones was there, he was playing with his home club from WA. Great to catch up with him. Spike’s team played the Tingira Boys in the third game of day two. Great fun.

What a buzz. We started off by being the first group ever to enter a female team. The girls Carole Pope, Dianne Thomas and Marion Schubert (The Minders) were fantastic, their catchword was ‘ we are only here to make some men happy’, well the girls certainly were successful in their aim. It was easy to pick up their laughter and banter on the green then in the clubhouse during the socials. They did not win a game, however, they won plenty of friends and scared a few of the teams, especially the last game where they were narrowly beaten. The Minders appeared to have had a ball. Hopefully they will be back next year and here’s hoping we have some more takers (must be ex service) who can bowl.

This report is forwarded by Nifty Nev: The 'Tingira Boys' won 5 of their 10 games, aggregate score on the plus side and they achieved the unlikely by scoring a perfect 9 out of 9 possible points in the first game on Tuesday. Barry, Malcolm and myself all agreed, we came together very well as a new team and have committed to roll up again next year as the 'Tingira Boys'. There is a pic in the Attachment of this team.

Mal Ritchie wrote this Well what a great week, great fun, a few beers (alright maybe more than a few), and what a great way to share with your mates after 50 years and we're coming back next year. Our team ended up winning five and losing five and who can forget the " NINE ". A big thank you to all involved especially Tom for organizing it all, and a big thank you to the ladies and all the support team, it was just one heck of a week and looking forward to next year already.

Best Regards & thanks again

Mal

The LEEUWIN 63’s represented us again with the same trio as last year. Their luck just wasn’t with them, being knocked off by the last bowl of the game wasn’t unusual. They tried hard, laughed a lot and got on with it.

By Barry Andrew What a great couple of days with all who came and especially our team Neville Thomas as lead Malcolm Ritchie as second and your truly as skip. The first day was hectic getting our heads around the job at hand and also getting to know each other as well as our different bowling techniques and getting our act together as a team. We were playing triples and the first day was 4 games of 11 ends per game, what a marathon, we managed to win two out of the four great effort. Next day the task was reduced to three games of these games we won one, but we managed to pick up nine shots one end, my opponent was almost in tears after this humiliating defeat. Day three only three games, by now we are getting our act together and becoming a force to be reckoned with winning two out of the three games. We had a great time together also socialising with everyone before and after the games. We have thrown our hats in the ring for next year, for we enjoyed ourselves so much.
Cheers
Barry

Tom Houldsworth has forwarded some pics which will be on our Facebook page.

G’day All. Happy Fathers Day. Hope you all have a good family day. We spent a very pleasant week in Adelaide with two of our Grandkids doing the Fathers Day thing with Cubs and Girl Guides. Was fantastic.

When we were in Adelaide I spoke to Fred Howes. We intend to catch up on our next planned visit to SA in November/December.

Spent the weekend in Gosford attending Jaffa and Ann Robinson’s wedding. Jaffa was/is a Safety Equipment sailor. I know several people in our intakes know him. Stayed at McMasters Beach with Tassy and Pam Mason. A really good time was had by all.

Lawn Bowls is the flavour of the week. Several of our group are converging or are in Dubbo. I am really looking forward to barracking for our three teams and catching up with them and the LEEUWIN 63 supporters. Last year our LEEUWIN team did so well. Will post their results next week.

Mick Gallagher has returned from OS. He has forwarded a pic showing his beautiful wife Heather. For as long as I have known Mick I have not met, spoken to, or seen Heather. She is real. A picture of the happy couple is featured or will be featured soon on our FB page. The pic was taken when they were holidaying in Prague.

Terry Dack has been leading the charge with the rabbits for the reunion. Have a look at the clock he has sourced in the Attachment.

There has been a few responses to Perry’s email from last week. Kev Smith has responded and asks the question. Does anybody knows the whereabouts of CPOGI Wally Walton and Butch Cousins has inquired about Dave Brunswick. Butch’s email in part ‘He was a LSUW but I think he changed to PTI. He was the kellick of Winjan 1 7th intake. Butch.’

Weekly News 1963 LEEUWIN 31 August 2014

G’day All. Who remembers Terry Corkhill, he was the Mokare PO in LEEUWIN. Well Perry Whitehouse met up with him in Darwin recently. We are inviting him to our reunion. I have been in contact with Ken Railton, unfortunately he cannot attend, however, he is going through his address book and will forward contact details of other staff who were in LEEUWIN when we were there. Do you know where any other staff or Divisional Staff are. Did you want us to try and contact your favourite Schoolie or Divisional Staff at LEEUWIN. Be great to see them next October.

Chris Robson, the head instructor in our time has visited our website and made comment. Fred Howes talks about how he helped him in LEEUWIN. Ken has his contact details.

This is the email from Perry:

Admittedly I have been somewhat withdrawn over the previous few years but felt that you and many others would be interested in the following.

I am a member of the Humpty Doo sub branch of the Vietnam Veterans association - the last one standing in the north of the NT. Last Monday, VV Day or Long Tan Day we (about 15) attended the commemoration in Darwin. Anyhow during the service I got talking to a visiting fellow from Western Australia. A navy veteran and an ex POUW. He was in his early eighties and slightly built. Turned out it was Terry Corkhill who must be remembered by many of our members. He seems in good health and is now a widower.

He assures me that the draft .. long time since I heard that word... he had to HMAS Leeuwin was the best of his naval career. He said that he would dearly love to meet some of the young fellows that he instructed all those years ago.

So I have invited him to attend our reunion in Adelaide with me next year assuring him that he would be a very welcome guest. I expect this is in order?

I would be grateful if you could mention this in our next newsletter.

Kind regards

September is upon us. So is Lawn Bowls in Dubbo, I am really looking forward to barracking for our three teams and catching up with the LEEUWIN 63 supporters. Last year our LEEUWIN team did so well. This is on Monday week. Yipee

Jack Davey forwarded this:

Good Morning,

Unfortunately I won't be going to Dubbo. It's a bit of Ying and Yang really. Yesterday I got a call from Campbelltown Hospital to say I'm scheduled for Cataract surgery on my right eye late next week. For me that's great news. I'm on a public list so postponing is not an option. Surgery on my left eye will likely follow in October. When the left eye is healed the needles will start again for the Macular degeneration in my left eye.

I'm disappointed about he bowls but looking forward to seeing well again. Like Tom we have a son who lives permanently in the USA, in Texas, We've put off our planned October trip to the USA as well. All being well we'll go in April 2015.

Another positive is that with the USA trip postponed then I might get to our get together in Newcastle. Depends on the surgery date for the left eye. of course. I went to the first one we had at the Brewery and had a great time.

Good luck at Dubbo.

Cheers,

Jack

From Ron: All the best with your Op Jack hope to catch up and you see us soon.

Have spoken to Rod Hazell during the week, he will be off soon on his annual romp with t
